You guys really need to lighten up. Its not a hanging offence FFS.

But it is an offense none-the-less. There's a good reason they don't want people drink driving.

I think your hanging a guy without hearing the evidence.  But my main point though was that many players have a drink and are elite.

Please don't interpret my comments as being in any way supportive of drink driving.  I'm critical of making judgements without the facts.

The evidence was in the police BAC reading...what other evidence could there possibly be? And I'm hardly suggesting it's a hanging offense... if I recall correctly I believe I said that hopefully he will learn from it.

But that's exactly what I said Saty...that it's NOT a hanging offence and that I hope he will learn from it.

Cue 12 months to 2years time we will be reading interview with Oliver in which he reveals that the kick up the arse given by certain player/coach/plural was a turning point which illuminated him to the standards required to achieve the elite status etc etc.

Where's the outrage?

Plenty of it in the 9 pages so far.

I'm sure you have never exceeded the speed limit by 1km/hr as well HT....

There is a fascinating mix of over and under reaction in this thread...

I'm pleasantly surprised by his low level reading.

We can only hope that he gets the Uber app on his mobile and  uses it.

Being a country boy he would have 10 years driving experience at his age.

He will be made to do a drink driving course  and will be getting an interlock device put on his vehicle for six months to a year.

I don't wish the club to impose any further sanction than that.

I doubt they will.

To be fair, I think there has been precious little outrage either.  There has got to be some middle ground between dismissing the incident completely and putting him in front of a firing squad. I suggest that blowing any alcohol reading when you are on P's is foolish (and the law is in place for a reason)  and will elicit some form of punishment  - definitely from the police and probably from the leadership group. These sorts of offenses (even though this appears on the minor end of the scale) is something sponsors absolutely hate.

I dont drink so .05 has never been a problem but have absolutely sped and copped my right whack on occasions. But there has to be an understanding that different professions have different standards associated with them. With all the money in AFL there is an expectation from the league, the club, the players themselves and certainly supporters that players conduct themselves in a certain way on and off the field.

To re-iterate - it is not a hanging offense but merely acknowledgment of a behavior that is below expectation. We move on.

You're correct on that point as I cannot constantly watch the speedo, but if I do check and see that I've drifted over the limit I will immediately slow down to the correct speed... however, as drinking involves the making of a conscious decision, if I'm going somewhere that I'm likely to drink any alchohol at all, I leave my car at home; if I take my car and someone offers me a drink I will politely decline...simple really.

Anyway, I am far from outraged and I do understand it's all part of the learning process; he will no doubt be the better for it.

Fair enough. If he learns a lesson that is only a good thing.

he should know exactly what is required if he wants to make it at the top level of his chosen sport.

So have you moved away from your position that it's indicative of his understanding of what's required to be "at the top of level of his chosen sport".

I think it is what should be "the known and expected" as opposed to the reality of these kids being kids.

I talked to an administrator of a club ( not ours) and he said that amount of education that goes into the players regarding drugs and alcohol would blow our minds. They reflect first on all important legal aspects but then go on to educate on how it impacts performance.

So every players is in no doubt as to what is required to make it to the top level but that doesn't mean that kids won't make stupid mistakes.

I'm not sure how you come to that conclusion... I stated that he needs to understand what is required to make it at the top level and then I have stated that I hope he will learn from the experience, because if he has he will be all the better for it.

We could play semantics but to put it in a nutshell I think having a drink has nothing to do with becoming an elite player.  I reckon Hodge, Cousins, Swan and Kerr all had plenty to drink (and more) and became elite.  If he's got a drinking problem then yes it could be an issue but there is no evidence of that so suggesting that this incident puts a serious question over his dedication to becoming elite is misplaced. At least that's what I thought you were doing (initially) and that was the issue I was debating.

Getting behind the wheel was dumb if he know he had a blood alcohol reading but if it was residual from the night before and he thought he was clear it was just a learning experience as you say and says nothing to his dedication to the cause or his ability to become elite.

  • 2 weeks later...

Port has just suspended Jarman Impy for the first round, after smashing into 4 cars and leaving the scene, having a team mate in the car as a passenger and following a bout of drinking all afternoon. One could reasonably infer that he was attempting to avoid a breath or blood test.

Port deemed that as a one game suspension and fine.

Given that, if we are concerned with a fair punishment, Oliver should not miss a game, but rather be fined, or given another penalty that doesn't involve a suspension..

Red, what is your opinion of the penalty given to Impy?

Very light.

He was probably very intoxicated. Was stupid in his driving, allegedly doing donuts. Caused damage to 4 cars. Then ran away. Not too many redeeming features.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t
