Hawks Blunder

I suppose they can say they won 3 flags, but the clearing of father/grandfather legend/son, Josh Kennedy, is one of the greatest list blunders of modern times.

Kennedy last night won his 3rd Swans B & F. He has become a champion.

His family begged Clarkson to give him a go, but they didn't and cleared him.

It shows even a genius footy coach like Clarkson, can make a huge blunder on the ability of a player. Would they have won more flags with him?

Yeah i do not think it is a blunder at all.  There may be a better word for it but i cannot think of it this early.

As far as Kennedy goes, yes they got that wrong. But if he wasn't moved on would they have missed out on someone else? Can you remember what they got for him?

Would the Brisbane Lions have won more premierships if Nathan Buckley remained at the club?

Kennedy and McGlynn were offered contracts by the Cola Swans that the Hawks couldn't match. If it wasn't these 2 players, it would have been others.

It's an excercise in futility summising what would have been if player X was still at a club. And It was hardly a blunder when they still won 3 flags over that period.

The thread is not about what would have happened had he stayed, that is a throw away line. 

The thread is about even the best Coaches misjudging the talent and ability of players even on their own list. 

It was a blunder and Clarkson would agree.

At the time he didn't fit in. Maybe he needed to be knocked down to rise up. 

Hardly a mistake. Hawthorn's played in 5 Grand Finals 8 years and won 4 flags.

They let Kennedy and McGlynn go because they already had those positions covered with Mitchell, Lewis, Hodge, Shiels and Burgoyne. It was a decision based on their overall list, not the individual.

Trading out Terry and Neale Daniher for Neville Fields was a blunder. As was Teasedale, Roberts and Jackson for Pitura.

I doubt that Clarkson would agree that it was a blunder.

It's not that simple. They had Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell and a bunch of other mids. They did offer Joey a 1 year deal but he took a 3y deal from Roos.

In retrospect it was a huge blunder particularly given the name but it hasn't damaged them in a cultural sense nor performance sense

Letting someone who'd currently be their best player leave for a pick 39 who played 3 games? I'd say he'd agree it was a blunder.

I suspect Collingwood supporters probably feel something similar about Liam Picken about now. 

Having said that, the whole father-son issue is hugely problematic for clubs. What's the greater blunder? Recruiting a father-son who doesn't deliver (eg, Chris Johnson) or letting one go who does (eg, Picken)?

I think he would admit that he should have let someone else go instead.

Kennedy was not on big money at the Hawks. The blunder is in who he chose to get rid of, not what success they had later.

Clubs constantly have to actively assess their list in terms of both talent and mix. In that context I don't think it's a blunder at all. He left for opportunity and the Hawks already had a stacked midfield including Mitchell, Hodge, Lewis, Sewell, Burgoyne plus a bunch of others rotating through including Rioli, Bateman, Shiels etc. It's almost the perfect balance of midfielders so it's not like Kennedy's departure left a gaping hole. Even in hindsight, it's hard to imagine the Hawks being any better over the journey if he had stayed.

Kennedy and McGlynn for 39 (Grimley), 46 (Stratton) and 70 (promotion of Matt Suckling).

Grimley was a dud and Stratton is a decent player, but hardly worth one of the premier mids in the comp.

Regardless of who they took with the picks, on that trade it's obvious they just didn't rate him at all.
