Very sad for the people of Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula region not to have a senior footy club representing them. Poor for the VFL to stick the knife in - but I don't think the powers that be give a fig about local footy.

As a player sponsor for the past 3 years, it has been rather difficult to watch the slow-motion train wreck that the Dolphins' performances have offered over that time - (shades of following the Dee's in 2012 - 2014).

Just seems to be ludicrous that a region as populous and diverse as the Mornington Peninsula will not have a representative team in the VFL in 2017 and beyond.

Throw your support behind the Casey Scorpions.

Hopefully they will be renamed the Melbourne Reserves when sanity prevails and we drop the pretence of giving a toss about their proud 12 year history as Casey.

The Victorian VFL sides should stand alone. When their senior sides play interstate sides those Victorian team should play each other. Their should play 22 rounds. The ex-affliated sides plus other teams to make up a min.10 team comp. could be considered as the thirds.

Any team that gets the doors shut on them is very sad.

It's happening too often up here in the country too.

What's the future for the club if the VFL did not revoke its licence? It has been hopelessly uncompetitive for years now. If I was at VFL HQ I'd want to be presented with a vision and a solid plan on how it was going to be achieved before reconsidering. A petition won't cut it.

I admire the passion in this thread, but I can't see how it does either the club or the VFL, which is the state's second tier competition, to have an easybeat side parked on the bottom of the ladder. If the club is still viable, let it register in a lower competition where it might have some hope of success. If not, let nature run its course.

Your not wrong Nasher, however not all of the Dolphins problems are of their own accord. Things started to go downhill when the old grandstand burnt down because of squatters that were living underneath it.

http://www.theage.com.au/news/national/fire-destroys-historic-grandstand/2008/02/13/1202760336572.html

The Dolphins were then badly let down by a combination of Frankston City Council, St Kilda FC, the AFL and State Government who couldn't find a way to raise the necessary 5 million dollars to allow St Kilda to build their new facilities at the site and in the end St Kilda moved to Seaford instead, and we all know how that worked out.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/saints-move-to-seaford/story-e6frf9if-1111117508958

Before the fire the Dolphins were regular finals competitors and it's no coincidence that since then the wheels at Frankston have fallen off due to debt and lack of talent/resources.

What's the solution/plan going forward? I'm not sure? One thing that's always disappointed me over the years is that you never see any of the good Frankston/Mornington Peninsula players go back and spend a season or two representing Frankston in their premier sporting team. Think of some players over just the last 10 years like Jeff White, Travis Johnstone, Paul Johnson, the Lonie twins, Jarred Moore etc. Now these players are rightly entitled to do what they like post their AFL career. But it's a shame when you here of some playing in the EFL or for Williamstown/Port Melbourne in the VFL, but never the Dolphins.

I'd love to maybe see something where the Frankston City Council in partnership with the Mornington Shire can pay maybe up to half a dozen recently retired or delisted AFL players from that area up to 75K a year for a maximum of 2 years to play for the Dolphins and act as an ambassador for Frankston & the Mornington peninsula region. That would obviously include appearances at certain events in the area such as Sandcastle exhibition the Guitar festival etc.

I can honestly say after 13 years in the public service  (I don't and never have worked at either of the councils mentioned) that there are plenty of jobs/positions created in the public service for around that pay scale (often higher) that contribute very little if not nothing as far as benefit to the community goes. Often they're positions for the sake of having them.

And having spent the majority of my first 25 years in Frankston, parking is that expensive there, thatt 75K x6 a year should be small change for the council to be able to make up.

So add half a dozen recently retired/delisted AFL players from the Frankston/Mornington region into their squad and obviously their competitiveness should improve as well as crowds and the bottom line. The councils should get a benefit from it also.

That's the type of plan I think they should embark on anyway.

The question is how much money do you need to pump in when the team only wins 1 or 2 games per season.

If they do save the club I think they'd need to not only give them money to survive but also some form of business opportunity (ie pokies) so they can make money long term to pay enough salary to keep strong VFL players like Port Melbourne and Williamstown do.

So if they have to give them pokies to save a community club that's not a win.

Maybe the local council could run the club and delegate to the club a bunch of facilities to manage like how Richmond are getting in to community facility management.

Certainly they need more than just cash. A few AFL players over the last decade isn't really enough to keep the club alive if it never wins.

Pokies aren't helping North Ballarat's VFL team from a financial point of view.

No TV money in Frankston RtG so the AFL have little interest.

Frankston is expendable

The AFL I suspect see supporters in that region as rusted on...so why bother.

It's short sighted and disappointing.

Grew up on the Peninsula, but have to say always had a set against the Frankston VFA side. Would prefer Mornington kicked on.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
