Knowing how well they have worked in the past they will probably add another team.

Don't hold your breath. Whist an odd number of teams normally would account for byes, the overwhelming reason is that the VFL play 18 games and the AFL plays 22 games.

When you factor in the two byes before the AFL Grand Final, there are only two ways to have the VFL Grand Final take place the week before the AFL GF.

1. To start the VFL season 5 weeks after the beginning of the AFL season, - meaning no games for players not in the senior team.

2. Start the season a little later and fit in 3 or 4 byes, which is what we have right now.

It's just the tyranny of arithmetic. (Unless someone has a solution I am not aware of).

if the 18 games is so important, play 22 rounds but any non afl listed player can only play 18 games. more non listed players then get a game

however with so many stand-alone teams it may be getting harder to justify 18 games

No longer exist or relegated to playing in a lower league?  Surely they haven't simply folded and stopped playing at all levels?

Franga gone. I went to a few games down there in the 70's

It is sad, but 5 wins in 3 years is pretty shocking. We are lucky the AFL didn't do the same to us

I too am a Frankston boy having lived there happily for the first 35 years of my life. I remember well watching Frankston (the bombers) playing in the then Mornington Peninsula Competition. Watched the great John Coleman playing for Hastings and future Demon Ralph Lane doing a good job against him. Yes, it is sad that a footy club goes under. but It is hard to survive when you have no AFL affiliation.

How about the VFL, if they really want to be the AFL feeder or support competition, play the same number of rounds as AFL.   

At least having an even number of teams would stop some teams having byes and others not....this year IIRC Casey has 2 byes in 3 weeks or something like that. Ridiculous.

Lack of AFL affiliation meant the Dolphins died a slow, predictable death - agonising to watch.

If only Frankston Council had accepted the gilt-edged opportunity presented to it just few years ago when it had the chance to have St.Kilda playing out of Frankston Park.

 

'The momentum killing byes' are a little overrated. 

We've had young kids and repeatedly injured players who need time coming back from injury in the VFL and there's frustration that we can't get best 22 types out there, but if you have more depth and experienced guys who don't need time in the reserves it isn't such an issue.

18 games is more than enough for youngsters to play.

Sad for the VFL to lose a side and for young developing players chasing a chance to miss out.

Don't want to gloat but it might be good news for Casey in signing talented players from the Mornington Peninsula or Dandy Stingrays area.

They are momentum killing when there are (as I recall) 2 or 3  byes in 4 - 6  weeks.

Having an even number of teams will at least change this.

Question:  How many rounds do WAFL or SANFL play? Do they have lots of byes?

Agreed. Was down there a week ago to watch Frankston YCW v Mt Eliza Grand Final. It's very disappointing....and galling. The AFL bangs on about it's work with the community but I call horseshite on that. Frankston is very much a mixed area (world of difference between Frankston South and the Pines) but it's a big AFL town and region. The AFL could assist here from a monetary sense and probably beyond but would rather prop up an artificial construct in GWS (I know, I know, we've been told to embrace them but they can GGF for all I care). Even a fraction of this money would be enough for keep the Dolphins going.

No TV money in Frankston RtG so the AFL have little interest.

I'm sure they see it that way. What I do know is that Mt Eliza is currently the biggest club in terms of participants (huge junior program) and it's a short sighted decision imo

The question is how much money do you need to pump in when the team only wins 1 or 2 games per season.

If they do save the club I think they'd need to not only give them money to survive but also some form of business opportunity (ie pokies) so they can make money long term to pay enough salary to keep strong VFL players like Port Melbourne and Williamstown do.

So if they have to give them pokies to save a community club that's not a win.

Maybe the local council could run the club and delegate to the club a bunch of facilities to manage like how Richmond are getting in to community facility management. 

Certainly they need more than just cash. A few AFL players over the last decade isn't really enough to keep the club alive if it never wins.

Our skipper played his junior football down Mt Eliza way.
