Palmer's disposal is atrocious. I believe if Stevie played instead of Palmer, GWS would have made the GF.

Agree. He was a liability. Ironic that gws got johnson in at leastvin part because of his experience in finals and he gets himself rubbed out with some misguided physical palaver. Potentially cost them a gf win

I don't think so. I just think Carlton's list is/was in a terrible state and he's going with talent he knows how well and can get cheap. He wasn't on Carlton's side when he sold them lemons in Jaksch and Whiley and the 4 for 1 deal last year worked pretty well. Phillips and Plowman were worth it. 

I also think his hit % was pretty good. They overdrafted some key defenders and outside pace once they had the forwards and ball winners locked in. They've also had a number of guys injured just as every club does, it just so happens that so many of their players are highly ranked juniors that they've had injuries from that group.

If Palmer goes to Carlton then I think it will be a salary cap dump which is an unusual deal for an AFL club. Carlton will take Palmer and his salary and in return get the players they do want from GWS - Marchbank, Pickett - cheaper.

SOS was very hit and miss at GWS and now his ego is getting the better of him, sweeping up all the scraps that he originally picked, determined to make them work at Carlton. They really are poorly run. They wreak of 'Old Boys Club' down there.

Doubt it.  We're still slow and their coach is still building their team around running their asses off.  The Blues and Saints will both get us by banging the ball away from stoppages and then outrunning us on the outside. Lewis isn't going to help us in the pace department.

no doubt about it. and it was interesting how little flack he received over it. probably because the melbourne press didn't want an all sydney final and the dogs were such an emotional pull at the time. stevie was a lucky boy.

Becoming very, very clear to me that Silvagni has no idea what he's doing. When you consider the amount of busts GWS had with their ludicrous first round concessions, it's mindboggling they've still leapfrogged into the top 4 (and an indictment on just how many concessions they've had).

I think they'll trade Gibbs and get all those ex GWS players for pick 13 plus something else from the Crows in the Gibbs deal. 

Trading out Yarran, Henderson and Menzel worked perfectly last year. Gibbs and Touhy are far more reliable players but you have to give something to get something when rebuilding and they just have very little to offer up.

They are adding average players because their list is rubbish and it's better to clear it out aggressively than hold on to battlers who are so bad they aren't even recognisable names. I wish GWS were around to dump 4 for 1 deals on when our list was a complete mess in 2012-2014. Instead we end up keeping Matt Jones, Terlich, Newton, Spencer, Michie, Bail types on for years. Guys like Kerridge, Wright, Sumner, Lamb at least offer fresh faces and able bodies.

They had 4 top 20 or so picks last year (3 of them were talls) plus Plowman. If I'm right they'll have pick 5, Marchbank and Pickett coming in this year. They've gone a long way to securing the spine which is a long term investment that usually doesn't show immediate results. If they get long term results from Weitering, Marchbank, Plowman, backline trio, Kreuzer/Phillips ruck, Curnow and McKay forward then they've got years to add midfielders. They'll probably start with pick 5 this year and get a very nice talent. The experienced B + C grade mids can provide the support for the young talls to develop and then once that happens it's easy to throw mids in.

We're a serious football club off the field these days and I love it. It won't be long before we're a serious club onfield too. Hopefully starting next year.

You're usually up this time of night AF. Without a doubt this is a serious fully-fledged tilt at the 2018/19 flag. The contracts give an idea of that themselves. Everyone key to the immediate future is signed up till around then. Beyond that? Pretty much every team that has sustained success in recent times has had some minor edge over such a tight comp - father/sons - priorities - or cap space. Geelong and the Hawks have managed dynasties through salary sacrifices.

I think Jackson and Roos sat down with one simple question - how do we make the MFC relevant again? Success. But what about sustained success? We plot a four-five year plan to a flag while instilling discipline, unity, loyalty and giving a taste of success and then hope for the best in terms of the cap and potential sacrifices.

Everything else has been measured to perfection. Get young talent in early at the expense of future picks or super-elite talent (extra development for a year and to form a core group growing together). And then top it it with A-graders with a window within that tilt  before clearing them out for spots and cap-space. Plug gaps with currency in the interim.

No doubt about it - we've targeted 18/19 to break the hoodoo - and in a wildly different path than the Doggies.

I reckon there's probably a lot of truth to your theory, although I think the club is backing itself to be in the top 4 and challenging by the time those contracts are up. Obviously it'd be great to win it, but it'll also be easier to retain players when we're up there.
