FA & Trade Whispers

Freo get pick 7 in a super open draft, McCarthey who they offered two first round picks for only 12 months ago, pick 33 which should help get Brad Hill over the line and a bonus pick.

it has the potential to be a massive win for them, one thing i will say about the Giants is they clearly understand the amount of help they're getting and they don't seem to mind paying overs to help out the other clubs.

Could be, plus the loss of a host of veterans who set the standard and took the heat of them have now either left or retired.  It makes a big difference.

The Cats are, if they land both Deledio and Tuohy, about to add 6 experienced players in 2 years, which shows they have little faith in the kids coming through.

Or they're just trying to strike while the iron is hot. The core of their premiership teams is dissipating, so if they went down the youth path, they'd be left with Selwood, some B graders and a bunch of kids.

It was evident this year that the difference between 1st and 7th was slight, and the Dogs won the flag against all expectations. It's not unforeseeable for either Geelong or Hawthorn to pinch another flag if their trade targets come off. It would be madness for either club to totally rebuild.

Is the Cats backline going to start looking a bit fragile from next year onwards? Enright retired, maybe Bartel too. Lonergan & Mackie getting long-in-the-tooth. Would expect them to be making some moves to shore that up this trade period.

Not sure that's entirely true. They have Perryman and Setterfield who are expected to be top 15 picks. If someone bid on either of those 2 with a top 6 pick, GWS would have had to use pick 7 to match. But now if someone bids on them 4/5/6/7 etc they can use their picks 15 & 16 to match whilst also getting a top 3 gun. At least I think that's how it works?!

Wow, GWS must be very very keen on a specific draftee at #3.

GWS want a pick before Academy bids. They get to pick a player at 3 and use later picks 15, 16 on Academy players instead of burning 7.

The cats have signalled they will struggle to get this guys in under their salary cap.

There are suggestions that Josh Caddy might be Offloaded.

I find this interesting as when they recruited him a couple of years ago I thought they were getting an average player.

This was in disagreement to the majority on Demonland who were very disappointed we could not get him..

Here we are a couple of years down the track and he has been very average at Geelong and they are looking to offload him.

I've always been in agreement OD.

Wouldn't say Geelong are looking to offload him yet though, I think it's only that the Tigers have mentioned him as a player they'd want in exchange for Deledio.

Looks like Freo will have a quick rebuild...  thats one of the most one-sided trades ever

OUT: Pavlich, Mayne and possibly Ballantyne plus Barlow.

Ageing Sandilands, Johnson, Dawson, Mundy

IN: McCarthy (issues) Hill (down hill skier)

Wouldn't get to excited by them just yet.

Today's trade action:-

• Richmond has signalled its interest in Geelong midfielder Josh Caddy as part of any potential deal for Brett Deledio.

• GWS forward Cam McCarthy is officially a Docker on a three-year deal after Freo today used pick 3 to reach a deal with the Giants.

• Daniel Wells has joined Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent after accepting a three-year deal with the Pies.

• Hawthorn forward Luke Breust won't be leaving the club this season in any trade, but admits he was "rattled" by Ospeculation he might be traded as part of a deal for Sun Jaeger O'Meara.

• At least six clubs have expressed an interest in out-of-contract Adelaide midfielder Jarryd Lyons.

DONE DEALS SO FAR:

Tyrone Vickery moves from Richmond to Hawthorn as a restricted free agent
Daniel Wells moves from North Melbourne to Collingwood as an unrestricted free agent
Cam McCarthy, pick 7, 34 and 72 move from GWS to Fremantle in exchange for pick 3.

I wonder if this might have a negative effect on some of Hawthorns players if they're being offered up as a part of deal.

I'm sure we all remember Daniel Bradshaw being a happy and loyal Lion before Voss attempted to move him on in the Fevola trade which worked wonders for him.

Bradshaw wasn't happy about that, didn't go to Carlton but ended up requesting a trade to Sydney. Unfortunately his time at Sydney was cut short due to injuries but he managed 28 goals in 9 games.

If the Bombers trade pick 1 for a combination of picks 3 & 5 from GWS, that's such an awful lose-lose outcome for every other team. And you just know it'll happen because the Bombers are big enough assholes to outright threaten to bid on their Academy players with pick 1 and screw up all their draft picks if they refuse to do the trade.

The Bombers will rebound faster with multiple top 10 picks than pick 1 alone, and GWS get to continue rorting the Academy system by getting not only the best player of the open draft but even more top 5 players via their Academy for a bunch of late first rounders.

The fact is the Academy bidding system pollutes the draft with corruption; any other team would be over the moon to have 3 & 5 in this draft, but GWS' concessions mean they are actually better off trading down those picks then hoarding some late first rounders. No non-Academy club would give up those picks in exchange for one, and without Academies clubs Essendon wouldn't be able to blackmail teams into trades.

Lols @ Richmond being interested in Caddy.

They really have no [censored] idea.

A starting midfield of Cotchin, Caddy and Miles with Ellis and Grigg on the wings. With Townsend, Moore, Hunt and Conca to provide support.

Hells yeh.

It will be interesting to see how their drafting goes under Lyon. Hasn't overseen a rebuild via the draft so hopefully it'll be entertaining. We should offer to pay Barry Prendergast to take care of their drafting this year.

Wouldn't surprise me if the Tigers paid a small part of his salary to get him off their books.  Not sure how much that would be, but it's happened before.

I still don't think he is the player to get them a flag though, and they're not only putting lots of their eggs in this basket, but it continues to show that their ability to develop younger players and bring them through is not what it used to be.

SEN the other morning, Paul Connors noted clubs of players traded in are not obligated to take on the players contract. I did not realise this, I assumed the contract was in place and if traded it was still honoured, even if a portion by the old club. The statement was is reference to Cloke at the Doggies. Cloke said he'd negotiatie a new deal with the Dogs.

freo are not really rebuilding via the draft if they're bringing in the likes of kersten, mccarthy and hill, with fyfe set to come back.

i can't see them being bottom three next year.

Those players are stop gaps, not players that they can build a future team around (McCarthy probably the exception).

They now have more draft picks as a result of the McCarthy trade and Lyon mentioned earlier in the month their intention to now start drafting in youth, because if they don't their list is well and truly stuffed.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
