But it's hard to juggle, especially when you have a 20 year old getting 30+ possies every week in the VFL and not getting a look in.

Of course if ANB is happy playing second fiddle behind our top-end inside mids then we're laughing but realistically that isn't going to happen.

If he can't get a regular game in our starting side going forward, he'll obviously be wanting opportunities elsewhere.

The club have a lot of forward thinking to do in that regard. List management would be a tough gig.

It was, but in the Scully/Trengove draft. Vickery was drafted a year earlier. 
Doesn't make a great deal of difference to your point, but I dare say Richmond would have copped a hell of a lot more criticism for his selection if it was at pick 3.

We have to get the club in to a position where the fringe players are prepared to bide their time and wait for a game when they are ready, Hawthorn are masters at this and can have players in a queue waiting for a call up. No point in having a player on the list for 3 years who is just below best 22 and replacing him with a draftee who may be in the same position in 3 years time.

I'd hate to lose ANB, I think he has a lot of ability and if he can hang in there for a while he may become a regular, form, retirements, players moving on, they all play part in it.

Seb Tape is a player that intrigues me. I'd rather us get in someone like a Tom Lamb, but i think finding a genuine utility is something we lack. 

Tape was a high pick a few years back as a 3rd tall defender, but has spent time recently in the NEAFL plying his trade in the midfield and forward.

Assuming we trade out Garland i think Tape would be worth a crack as a DFA assuming we can't land a Tom Lamb who i'm a big wrap for.

Quite a 'bake' of Richmond and Hardwick by Caro.  I think she is saying they are soft...

"It is laughable that the commentary around Richmond occasionally still refers to it as a cut-throat, merciless club. If that was even half true Hardwick would not have survived after what the team dished up in 2016, a season which took a turn for the worse back in early March during a disastrous pre-season match at Etihad when injuries mounted and the coach attempted to put a stop to the game...The situation never really recovered from that night".

I had forgotten that preseason game - Hardwick was so embarrassing when he tried to take his 'stars' off the field!  I truly don't know how they can keep him - they should cut their losses or the Board will go down with Hardwick when the good ship SSTigers sinks into the Yarra next year.

 

I often drink Shiraz to cull time but I suppose given my new recent title as a Troll ( I am not from Trollsylvania) my response may not be applicable to the question on hand.Since Casey are playing finals the "cull" will be put on hold,you blood thirsty supporters will have wait. Nibbler has had a stellar year, and I'd hate to see him leave too.  As someone earlier said, he hasn't been played to his strength in the firsts, but there are too many 'in-and-under' players ahead of him for that luxury.

A strong finals showing for Casey and, dare I say, a possible flag, could keep guys like this around for the success it breeds, especially if offers from elsewhere are not compelling.

Others in a similar boat could be M Jones and Newton, who provide depth and seem to always be on the cusp but not able to make strong statements when given a chance on the big stage.

The nibbler will get his chances next year.  He shouldn't go anywhere.  They are teaching him multi roles adding to his skills.  To me, he is a must keep.

We'll be basically ditching the lower end of the list and we won't get much for it. A return to the second round to replace the pick we'll use on Hibberd would be an excellent but surprising result.

I'm not worried about this year's draft position. We went 'early' last year and are getting development and games into two young round 1 draftees, rather than just getting another new talent this year.

Roos said the Melbourne approach would be the 'model' for teams wanting to rebuild, and I think what we did with Oliver and Weideman is part of that.

All I'm saying is we should seek to improve our position. If our second-rounder goes to Essendon for Hibberd, I can see us working some sort of magic to get ourselves back into the second round.

There are many possibilities.

We'll wait and see.

If all we are seeking is another second-rounder, then (in my humble opinion) our current drafting position is not "terrible".

er....some of 'them' may be playing for Casey in finals, and the aim of doing the delistings now would be?

We don't have to do any delistings before the cutoff date.  Due to Casey involvement, I would expect us to conclude our VFL commitments before 'exit interviews' are held on the fringe players who are still running around for the Scorps.  

I imagine everyone knows pretty much where they stand:. Contracted, uncontracted and likely to be recontracted, uncontracted and likely to be put on the market or delisted.

i like what we did grabbing Weids and Olli and getting 12 months development into them, instead of picking up a kid this year who would take another 12 months to come on.  If we go for Hibberd (likely, but no guarantee I would say) as our second rounder, do some upgrades, we use our mandatory 3 and go forward with a stable list.  We should only shed what makes us weaker.

But I also doubt that they would announce any delistings whilst Casey is still playing - only Norf would consider anything as stupid as that.

Richmond has one of the best first 10 players in the comp but they fall of a cliff after that. The club has built their list so poorly over the years and I think the club realises that Hardwick hasn't had the support he has needed in terms of recruiting and trading. Their attempt at stability through this situation is actually quite admirable. Without the AFL intervention we recieved, we'd have hired and fired 5-6 coaches in that period!
