I rarely have inside info on anything, but one thing I do know is that we never spoke to Varcoe at any stage.  The moment the ball started rolling with Clark we were always focused on making Lumumba part of that deal.

We had that in Salem though? Lamumba if i'm not mistaken, played CHB depending on the need. I do agree that he filled a role we needed for the one season and we could have never foreseen what has happened. But all the same, Collingwood came out on top if Varcoe is going to play another 2 or 3 seasons. If Hunt or Salem are injured next year then Varcoe would be the depth we could have used as a running defender and a player to keep Harmes and Bugg on their toes about selection.

Collingwood always come out on top. They would be a worry if they didn't have Maguire and Buckley leading them.

Agree... sounds strange.

Just looked at the Collective Bargaining Agreement.

After Round 18 you need the approval of the AFL General Counsel to put a player on the LTI list. The pre-condition is that it is reasonably believed that the player is incapable of playing for the next 8 weeks.

Could someone please explain the various salary cap permutations of early retirement with a payout. Thanks

Tired to google the answer to my own question but no luck.

Interestingly I did discover that in the last year or so the NRL changed its rules so that payments to a player for early retirement due to an injury would not be inlcuded in the salary cap.

Could the new Collective Bargaining Agreement be relevant to this equation ?

I don't think it has any practical implication for the team.

I am entirely speculating through. 

I think if a player retires because of an injury then the club is required to pay him the next year's salary as compensation.  The step of formally putting HL on the LTI now may be to establish that the injury occurred this year and the payout would be in 2017 - if next year is his last contract year then he's entitled to that anyway.  If the injury related retirement was to come in the last year of his contract, i.e. next year, then I believe he's entitled to an extra year's pay in 2018.

Didn't rate him in his golden years at Collingwood, and rate him less in the red and blue.At the best he has been servicable, but mostly he is a laibility. Run, run, run, run into trouble and boot it to no one. If he never plays another game I won't even notice. Just another NQR from Colling@#$% we won't miss or even remember ten years fom now

Whatever your opinion on him or the trade his health is the biggest issue here. Concussion injuries are a big problem in professional contact sport and the industry is still only scratching the surface of what we know for sure.

We need to do a termination deal quickly.

Feels like Heritier has lost his mojo... 

There was bloke in the off season who moved to Richmond and rumours were going around that he wouldn't play a game for them. That he would strike trouble of various kinds ... such as mysterious illnesses.

Sure enough he got a foot injury preseason and was out for weeks.

Then he unfortunately got "family issues" and they put him out to pasture for the season. To make sure he got himself totally right.

Wonder if our Harry might have struck a similar spot of bother.

They should both be sacked.

Sad end if it happens. The Prince would be handy in a 2017 finals campaign with his experience.

Perhaps H might play better football with us, now we are playing better football.

I hope he comes back for both himself and the club, we've had a few long term concussions and let's hope he gets over his and soon.
