Stop Making Hawthorn Stronger

If the clubs were really serious about catching up to the Hawks, they would stop clearing star players to them.

Players could be directed, or persuaded, to go to other clubs, on the basis that the Hawks are the direct opposition to them winning a flag.

When the Hawks lose their older brigade and are then stopped from getting T. Mitchell, Couch, Prestia, O'Meara etc, they will come back to the field.

To me, that is the way to stop the Hawk flags continuing.

People want to play for a top club or an up and coming club. In the EPL Man U,Arsenal,Chelsea,Man City ( lately) have dominated for the past 20 odd years. Money can buy you the best players, yet Leceister City won the EPL trophy, why? In the AFL system it is done by drafting players and hence trading occurs. If you compare the Dees to the Hawks in the last ten odd years, the Hawks have done many things better than the Dees and have reaped the rewards.

I'm with Chaser, the players have to much power, they're always going to want to the stronger sides, as long as they have as much power as they currently hold, the top of the ladder turnover will be to little, even if the Hawks drop i can see the Giants staying up there for the next 5-10 years anyway.

Free agency gives the players the ability to move to their club of choice, but the clubs should hold more power over the trade to ensure they get a better deal

players can be drafted anywhere so why can't they be traded anywhere?

Must allow clubs to trade contracted players for the best deal on the table, regardless of where player wishes to go.

AFL Players Association would never allow/agree to this, but it's how it should be.

I'm fairly certain you *can* trade players that are in contract, but most contracts have a clause that the player needs to agree to the destination. Occasionally a fringe player wouldn't have this (say, a Terlich). I'm not sure it's a AFLPA issue. They'd fight to ensure the nature of the contract is honoured, not that the player is shifted somewhere they don't want to go.

Wow. What a thread to start the day we play Hawthorn. How about we beat them and become the next Hawthorn rather than whining about how it's unfair. What have the AFL ever given us apart from mountains of draft picks, a CEO and one of the best coaches of the last 20 years?

So on SEN during the day this week - think it was Tuesday - interview with this stats guy & were talking about measuring the potential of teams by the number of their players under 23 with more than 10 games. In Round 19 we had the most with 10, then there were GWS & Bulldogs with 9, the next was 7, and it tailed off with Hawthorn & Richmond, among others, with 2; North & Geelong were down the bottom there too.

Our Round 19 team was one of our oldest teams for the year - this round with Oliver & Bugg replacing Dawes & M. Jones we'd have 12.

They linked it to Dion Prestia: "if you were Prestia, you had maybe 6 or 7 good seasons left, you'd want to move to an established side (i.e. not GWS) that had the best chance of getting a premiership in that time. Who would that be?" Well, it would be Melbourne or Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have a number of similar players, so it's probably Melbourne."

This is our potential. But to really compete with the Hawks & Swans as a destination team, either next season or in what's left of this season, we have to back up this potential with performance.

It's not about whining, its about the other clubs deciding not to give the Hawks a free pass every year.

If they are going to lose a star player, to try and persuade that player to go to a club other than the Hawks.

It's actually about the other clubs trying to stop the monopoly of flags that has happened recently.

No problems if you are against self help.

How about we stop worrying about the other bloke and just lift our own game to be better than theirs. Thats the equation Red.

And big Maxy has done a great job of that this year.

Be a big win for we can knock them off today, however, irrespective of today, the cycle is turning.

The AFLPA want a cut of the revenue...to get it they need to give something up.

Maybe this is the thing they trade, they can't have it all.

They get frees because they are rent boys for the AFL and their toilet trained apologist media associates.

I think it evens itself out Redleg.  They did well out of getting guys like Burgoyne, Gunston, Lake and Frawley, but watching today's game I think they missed on O'Rourke and if Sicily and O'Brien are stars in the making then Juice Newton should make a comeback. I'm not surprised that of the names mentioned it's Mitchell, Prestia and O/Meara.  I think all have huge question marks over them and while they are on the market all come with question marks in relation to their value (compared to a Dangerfield type deal).  In essence unless they can attract free agents (like the first group of players above) the Hawks are still constrained by what they can offer in terms of draft picks (both actual and perceived - i.e.. future).

Some anonymous terd called AW after the game and said Hawthorn had met with Petracca 2 years ago and told him to wait and they would pick him up on big dollars.  Not sure if this is just BS...however they are mercenaries and would not be surprised.

Not going to happen. These young players have something special, a bond that is more than money. That will keep the majority of them here, and hopefully means TMac will re-sign soon. I honestly can't see him leaving, side on the up, playing alongside his brother, possibly in premierships. That is what dreams are made of.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
