Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Anybody in Beijing this weekend?

From last week's game day thread it seemed there might be a few of us in Beijing. It would be great to catch up and watch the swans game together over a couple of friendly ales. I know a great bar that will put just about anything on one of their many screens. Let me know.

Cheers,

GO DEES!

Believe it or not Rev, I am. Arrived yesterday and we are walking the wall for the next two days. Zero chance of my wife agreeing to me watching footy though while here. Would love a bar suggestion though.

Depends what you want. The bars at Hou Hai are fantastic on a Saturday night - live music, beautiful surroundings, lots of happy people and expensive drinks. Great place to take the wife for a romantic walk along the lakes. If you're after western style bars, Paddy O'Shea's in Dongzhimen is an Irish sports bar with a French barman and an Indian restaurant upstairs. There are several other western bars in Dongzhimen but I haven't tried them.

Have a great time. It's a pity you won't get to see the 28 point victory on Sunday.

Left there Is always a way, however, It may be your most costly sports bar visit ever.  Oh, then there's also the minor Issue of having to hunt down a new piece of luggage for your return trip or alternatively extra fees for going overweight ! I would also want a g'teed victory for the likely price tag!

Out of curiosity Reverend what is the picture quality of the broadcast in Beijing.

In Malaysia where I spend a lot of my time the AFL (5 games per weekend) is shown on the Australia Television Network. The channel is standard definition unlike the main sports channels which all have HD duplicate channels but the quality of the AFL broadcast is below the other standard definition shows (say Q&A) that is shown on the Oz network.

The game is on about five minute delay and I suspect the compression rate they are using for the broadcast transmission is less than perfect. It is a bit like watching a you tube clip meant for your computer blown up on the television.

As we say in Hokkien ... cum siah

Ahh Beijing. Where in 2004 I shanked a drop punt in Tiananmen Square and falconed an unsuspecting Chinese national.

Next thing you know a white Tarago full of Chinese army soldiers wanted to know what happened.

Needless to say kick to kick isn't appreciated in China as much as it is here. Got my footy back though!

I was in Shanghai about 10 years ago (an eternity in terms of Chinese development) and had a very good meal at M on the Bund. Has an amazing rooftop terrace overlooking the river and the huge buildings going up on the other bank. Run by an Aus expat. Wonder if it's still there. I remember Shanghai being a dynamic, international city with so much to experience.

edit. Found a pic.

I found the quality fine watching it in Palawan. Was a couple of years ago though.

Haven't seen Australia Plus In Vietnam

Perhaps they are more selective in the quality of television they allow to be consumed

No it is very much alive  but as mentioned now goes under the name of Australia Plus

What did change a few years back that the budget was cut and programmes specially made for Asian audiences were discontinued. Now it has the ABC current affairs, lots of soaps and lifestyle shows plus the AFL.

Rugby league is on the main sports channels.

http://tv.australiaplus.com/

The scroll down does show times for Vietnam.... it is included as a "lifestyle programme" in my subscription and sits some 300 stations from the sports section if that is of any help

Yeah, it's not great. Not sure where bars get their stream from but it's always subject to internet speed. Picture quality is generally watchable but a long way from HD. Lots of pauses while the buffering catches up.

Go to Hou Hai, the wife will love it. Take her for a boat ride, a walk and a meal. All will be well with the world!

The amount of AFL matches screen on A+ is great IMHO, far preferable to the app, which can be a bit unreliable.

The only problem is they run the same three ads over and over again for the entire season; can recite them all word-perfect by round three.

One more warning towards his dismissal Earl. Should've known better than to employ Bitters in your export endeavours. The learnings of a start up, hey.

Anyone in Houjie (Guangzhou)?

I'm after a place that will show the game in 3 hours.

Irene's opens at 5pm. Any other suggestions on a place that will

1. Be open

2. Show The Mighty Demons

3. Serve cold drinks (marginally optional)

4. tolerate shouting at TV

5. Some kind of salted snack

No no Earl!!!! You misunderstand me! Uncle was the beneficiary of a modest bequest from the late and lamented Aunt Bertha.

As if I'd be reckless with your hard earned Earl  Just transfer that additional $5000 and you'll soon be racking it in

Trust me!!

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
