Must be scrapped immediately. We will make more money from making the finals, and we will never make it as long as we are selling games to the NT.  We go there twice a season and that means another two games travelling back the week after that we lose too.

Automatic 4 losses before the season even begins, 3 if we are lucky.

So we only need to win at one stadium?

Super logic, that.

No, but why would we give up a home ground advantage.

And, let's be honest. Finals are at the G so, if we make it, we're better off being able to win there than anywhere else.

Haven't  been there to watch a game  but on TV it always seems the other side has far more support from the locals in Alice and Darwin. Bunch of ingrates up there!  We are like the Washington Generals to them.

True, but we play well there already.

Plus selling games is not something new.  North and Hawthorn do it in Tassie, while other clubs are even pushing for games outside of the country.  In the modern era you need to get on the front foot to attract new supporters, which leads to more money and so forth.  We are trying to do that with the NT, although so far, in terms of our performance, it hasn't helped us out just yet.

We haven't won a single game in the NT or the week after playing in the NT, in the history of this deal.

Yet both Port and West Coast backed up NT wins last year the following round, so it's not impossible. Just for us!

North and Hawthorn have a distinct home ground advantage in Tasmania. We get smashed twice a year (and usually lose another two).

We're not making inroads in this market, and we aren't winning games, so what's the point?

North and Hawthorn are also 16-4 between them this season, so they can do whatever they damn well like.

We need to win games.

Why do you think all the little kids are wearing Hawthorn jumpers and their families buying memberships? It's not because Hawthorn makes the most profit in the AFL.

If we lost this million bucks, it would all come out in the equalisation wash anyway, let's be realistic.

Look, I'm in no position really to argue for it right now.  We aren't winning games there and we don't seemingly have a strong foothold there either.  I get that.  I'm merely arguing as to why we do it, and why we will probably continue to do it.  That's all.

I would not be averse to the China game if we had a bye to follow or similar concessions such as a n extended break. Could be good for the boys to take a mental break from the Winter here but I would think illness, fatigue, and pollution could be a factor for the two teams involved.

Having said that , the Chinese are likely to latch on to "Melbourne" as an entity rather than a suburb or a fictitious name like GwS.. So as we invented the game , so we must progress it.

So get more from the China deal, the women's league, leave Tas ,Darwin etc for others.

If we got to play another Victorian team there, it'd be fine. Has Koch got incriminating photos of Gil and his AFL cronies in compromising positions to keep getting Port fixtured to play there every time?

Bet GWS and GC never have to sell a home game.

Agree. If we win these matches at home, as we may have yesterday, then we play finals. Surely that is worth way more than 500k?

The AFL have told us we have to play in the NT, i have no doubt.

They are still bending us over for tanking...

i saw highlights of the game

looked like a VFL Match as far as atmosphere stands

the whole thing gives me the trotts...

I would be happy to pay an extra $20-30 on my yearly membership to play the two NT games at the MCG. 40,000 members doing this would more than cover the loss of income.

Giving away home ground advantage to play Brisbane in the past and Port is just plain stupid. I wish that we no longer get [censored] weak draws because we are crap and this fixing of the fixture is like "tanking". The weaker clubs need to get the experience against stronger clubs in order to become stronger. This assumes that clubs aren't coached by the Neelds of the AFL. How can Carlton who has been milked of good players win as many matches as us and beat Geelong? It is so frustrating being  a Dee supporter or perhaps it is a curse. Perhaps we should automatically drop 4 players it may stop the rest from getting big heads.

...for some MFC member families his may be a 3 figure levy which quite a few might not be able to afford.

It's a nice gesture to have AFL there, but different clubs should be rotated through yearly. The deal just kills our season. Saturday afternoon, coming off a win we could've gotten comfortably 25k and a decent chance to be 6-4 but instead we get a few thousand and burnt out players in the middle of the desert.

Our last two home games at foreign venues Roos has owned up to selection blunders! If anything end this deal for coaching reasons

Ideally? Yes

Realistically? No

It's easy to say "let others be nomads" but we have one of the lowest membership and supporter bases in the league. Success is built on dollars in footy and if we can help our bottom line by a million by selling 2 home games then we may have to continue doing so.

I wouldn't say our supporter base is that low. Bigger than North, Dogs, probably St.Kilda. Give another vic club a bad streak of form and their home crowds are fairly comparable.

We are being punished because we dont have as many members as the big clubs.

The AFL should subsidize the smaller clubs so they dont have to sell home games.  How the hell can we ever have a fair end even competition otherwise.

And we have to go to Geelong. Big deal.  Canberra was always one of their home grounds.

Don't be disingenuous.

They play games in Canberra because the ACT Government pays them to do so.  To wit they sell games.

Count me in. $20 is $800k on 40000 members and no travel expenses. 2 more games at the G would also make membership more attractive and a win or two extra would be very attractive.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
