Best chance: Clayton Oliver
The powerfully built midfielder became the first player to earn a Rising Star nomination this season after a tremendous first-up display against Greater Western Sydney. So highly do the Demons rate Oliver's clearance ability that he was thrown straight into the middle and he instantly set the tone around stoppages with his 'see ball, get ball' mentality. Oliver, pick No.4 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, had 22 disposals (15 contested), as well as seven clearances. He fits the Demons' desire for 'competitors' and is clearly in Melbourne's best 22 based on his early season performances.

Other contenders: Christian Petracca (yet to debut), James Harmes (nine matches), Oscar McDonald (one game), Sam Weideman (yet to debut).

Past winners: Jesse Hogan (2015), Jared Rivers (2004) - Ben Guthrie

I still think if Petracca is given a clean run for when he debuts he could romp it home. But boy Clarry more than put up his hand!

I am quite torn, Oliver was brilliant on the weekend and considering he only played what 60% of the game?

but Petracca is a next level talent, Hogan-like.

I don't think either will win because i don't think either have the fitness to play more than 15 -17 games this year, but both could be good enough to do it just off that as well.

It's just a total vote at the end of the year isn't it (rather than a round by round thing)?

With Oliver getting the nod first up and possibly fading as the year goes on simply due to his age, you could see Petracca smashing the second half of the season and being fresh in the minds of the voters.

Petracca has got to improve his fitness first and foremost, gain selection, then get into form.

Oliver looked well and truly at home against a gun up and coming midfield. With more game time, he'll thrive.

ATM it's Oliver by a landslide for mine.

I voted Clarry, because I've seen what he can do, and I think he has potential 'elite' written all over him.

But I will say this:  if Tracc  ends up ahead of him (barring any mishaps to Clarry), then we will have a potential match-winner of the highest order on our hands, and the future of our great Club looks brighter than it has for 50+ years.

I would say our best chance would be Oliver, but a lot of that depends on when Petracca debuts.

I'm expecting at least one of them to be a top five finish, but not expecting a win this year.  I enjoy the Rising Star award and process and see it as a bit of fun and extra level of interest.  My early money would be on Weitering; he's been nothing short of amazing this year.

I'll admit I haven't seen Petracca in the flesh yet, but if he's at the level of Oliver, that's exciting enough for me. Clarry is the most exciting player in a Melbourne jumper since Hogan. :P But I can really get excited by Clarry, because I know he'll stick around. Until Jesse signs that long term deal, Clarry is the most exciting Melbourne player out there.

Cannot wait to see Petracca play given all the hype surrounding him. I have been disappointed before by hyped Melbourne youngsters in the past though.

I don't think any of them have reached the level that Hogan and Cripps did last year but Weitering, Schache, Mills, Oliver and Parish are all playing amazing football for first year kids. Not sure a top 5 as a group have come in and looked so good. Caleb Daniel might be the best of the 2nd year kids.

Weitering, Parish and Mills are where I think the winner will come from. Top quality juniors who are really ready for AFL and entrenched in their teams best 22. Being the fat country kid who didn't think he was good enough for AFL 12 months ago will catch up with Clarry I think. But I'd be surprised if he wasn't getting votes at the end of the year.

Similarly for Petracca, he could do very well in 16 games, he has the talent, but he didn't have a full preseason or a big endurance base to start with and he looks like the type of player who will be very hot and cold in his early games. He isn't going to just play his role like a Weitering or Mills from half back. He's going to take the game on and back himself.

at this stage i'd say Parish is probably just ahead of Oliver and Caleb daniel

Everyone thinks Clayton Oliver is gonna win the rising star 2016, but I think Christain Petracca gonna win it.

Weitering. Best key position draftee I've seen in a very long time.

I probably should have included the word defender. Clanger.

It wouldn't surprise me if J. Hunt, gets a nomination at some stage later in the season (as he gets more comfortable at the level).  I have a feeling that our recruiters may have plucked another definite 'keeper' from nowhere with this kid.  I like the little I have seen, a lot!

A lot of cocky MFC supporters with a bit of cash.  Petracca has shortened dramatically in the rising star odds.  Second favourite atm, without playing a game.

Diamond Jim Mark II?

It's too early to tell but we will know in about eight weeks time.

As good as I think Oliver is, and he is a gun, my feeling is that Petracca will take the competition by storm.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
