Looking at Trengoves kicking, he doesn't seem to be uncomfortable on his right.

I wonder if coaches considered having part of each training session with players only using their opposite foot and hand to dispose  - it would be helpful for those predominantly one sided footballersto improve and be comfortable on their non preferred. Too late in a players development to worry about this ? A stupid idea ?

(I do recall that Greg Williams was such a gun handballer as he was compensating for his very ordinary foot skills. From mid time at Sydney he spent long hours practicing kicking and by the end of his career he was a  very reliable kick - albeit he was never a long kick)

Just a note on Hulett, he has put on about 2.5kg already, they want him to play around 95-98k, he is 92.5 at the moment, not bad for an 18 yr old, looking forward to having a bit of fun at Casey

Viney’s tackle on T.Mac was beautiful. Tommy, as he does quite often, took too long to kick and Viney grabbed his wrist and right hip and just pulled him to ground. Not as brutal as the tackle on Tuesday, but as effective.  agreed

Interesting Terlich is getting a mention. I got a phone call from someone who was at training today who also said Terlich looked very good.

agreed - but it is still good to have these guys are playing well so keep making others ahead of them perform.

For too long we have had discussions on a player out of form who should be dropped with the replies coming - who would you replace with him ? no-one else is kicking the door down to be selected.

I dont think the issue is taking on the opponent - to me it is more an issue of taking too long to decide what to do or too long to dispose of the ball. He gets blindsided a bit by coming to halt when deciding what to do with the ball.

I doubt it, but we want competition for spots.  I can certainly see him getting games this year on the back of injuries.  He'll get opportunities in the NAB challenge to press claims.

Love him.  He was great again today and is looking in tip top condition.  Marked well and hit every target I saw.  He can be a real driver in making us better.  Brayshaw, who I didn't mention, was also very good.  But let's face it, they're dancing with their Sisters.  That said, intensity is good.

I can't actually recall how he connects with the ball. Or how far he can kick it.

 

When he gets good contact there's no problem, but he has an issue with his ball drop.  He's a better field kick than set shot at goal.  Still, I did see him nail goals in practise.

I reported a conversation I had with Jason Taylor about Hulett a while back, could be anything but shows the attributes to be an AFL player  his size is an attribute  only one of the newbies who wasn't pulled out of the last quarter of match sim

With a competitive ruckman in Gawn, are we not better off playing a run-with tagger like Vince ahead of a negating tagger like Bugg?

I'd prefer to have the likes of N.Jones, Tyson, Viney, Brayshaw, VDB and Vince at stoppages than Bugg. TBO, the only role I see for Bugg is a shut down role on medium/small half forwards.

If Matt Jones and Dean Terlich are even close to our best 22 then we've gone backwards.

I don't give a toss what they do at training, they've already proven they aren't capable AFL players in any way, shape or form.

It's great they are training the house down, under no pressure, which they've done for years.  I'm glad they are having a dip, but if they are anywhere near our side this year (unless we have no choice due to injuries) then every single supporter should be worried.  Very worried.

I may have got a couple of those mixed up because I wasn’t taking notes but they’re pretty right.

Saty and ProDee have summed it up well. A few other things I noticed:

JKH started ‘on the bench’, came on to a contest in the goal-square and went straight off with something wrong with his upper leg/groin.  He lasted less than 5 minutes.

Terlich was good at buttering up and running out of congestion. A couple of less players on the field seems to suit a player like him.

Garland turned the ball over a couple of times- missing kicks to dangerous spots that resulted in rebound goals. As ProDee pointed out, both teams were guilty of this but I guess the one positive was that conversely they were able to take full advantage of the error and quickly move the ball forward for a goal.

vandenBerg knows where to run when his teammates have the ball.

Gawn continued his great preseason, working hard up and down the ground. Although he may have dropped a couple of marks, he did take a nice contested mark in the goal-square and also took a nonchalant one-hander running into goal on the end of a good passage of play.

Hunt and Harmes were good- they tried hard and although they made a few mistakes they kept backing themselves and taking the game on. Selection for the first few rounds is going to be very interesting.

Weideman uses his body well in marking contests but just couldn’t hang onto the ball today. Hulett shows promise- he is a natural forward.

You are the biggest hypocrite on this forum. Anyone slags off one of your favourites, and you're all over them (see Dawes thread). But you are happy to take pot shots at other players and posters whenever it suits.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a rap for Max.  He's been in rehab groups every time I've been to training.   But he's running well and having a kick.  Not sure what's wrong but he doesn't look far away. 

Mitch King looks a likely prospect too.

When I keep hearing this from the training reports it continues to worry me. Its only match sim and the pressure is a lot less than in a real game which makes it worse IMO.

Im glad someone's there to physically punish McDonald every time he gets caught stuffing around with it. Imagine the player he'll be, when he no longer makes you nervous every time he gets the ball.
