Completely agree Bossdog, the overreaction has been massive. I've seen players out in a group, around 5 or 6 of then, the day before a game (mid-season, not pre-season) having a shoot around with a basketball. Sometimes these things just happen, and you've got to be thankful it's just a minor toe (from club reports), and not more serious.

There's plenty of example's of random event's causing injuries like Tingay's glass incident a few years ago.

You cannot wrap players in cotton wool  and they have to have other interests than football 24/7.

Yeah your right, next time someone does an ACL they can just have lars surgery and rush back. No more trips to America to give them the best recovery possible.

Activities outside of football aren't the issue, it's the timing of it. I don't think people would have minded so much had he completed a pre season and played some games, he's still coming back from a previous injury.

Do you have a link to a report where it says it was the metatarsal? The club website just says "small crack to the fifth toe of his right foot"

I don't have any links to it GTG, I haven't seen it noted in the media saying meta. Just what I have heard, can't say where though.

I posted a while back that no one who said it was a 'meta' had given a source for it being that bone.  I still don't think anyone has.    ??

Was only an example, been plenty of these types over the years, both inebriated or sober. These guys are professional athletes, but also still normal people who can get injured the same stupid way the rest of us can. Tracc was unlucky more than anything, but the reactions on here are horrendous.

I thought Roos comment about not putting pressure on young recruits was interesting. In fact it appeared they have their hopes up.

Obviously all at the club are excited about the prospects of Petracca and rightly so. Let's hope his toe heals well and that Petracca does not lose his swagger.

Yep....It would be much better if it happened in March or April.    He would be out for 6 weeks at the start of the season.

I'm sure he didn't do it just to upset a few posters on here.    It a shame....but as in life.......[censored] happens

A fractured phalanx in a toe would not need 4 weeks "off legs". I bet he was fooling around with mates with no shoes on though!

Injuries whilst training or playing are part of the game. 

Yes players are entitled to pursue activities outside of football as is anyone in any job but if your coming back from a workplace injury you need to be doing everything in your control to get back, coming back from an ACL and still attempting  getting through your first full per season it wasn't the best time to being shooting hoops. Had it happened in twelve months time after he's played a full season I think the coaches would have been a bit more understanding.

All very well, but we don't actually know what he was doing when it happened.  It could have been a freakish accident in a situation where only the most helicoptoring parent (or footy team/demonland member) would have said 'don't do that'. 

The only indirect evidence we have that he was in fact stupid is Roos' comments. And even that may have been borne more out of frustration than with anger at bad behaviour. I guess that is motivating many posters as well since I reckon we'd have hardly heard a peep on the subject if it had happened to a player in whom we have no hopes of great things.

seems it was a metatarsal (foot bone) and not a phalanx (toe bone). 5th metatarsal is the longer bone connecting to the little toe

source is good. lets hope bone is healed as expected after 4 weeks rest
