Yep, he had his left knee reconstructed in 2014 and has now done the right one.

Even though he's a Magpie, it's terrible news. Never good to see any young player go down with an injury like that, let alone a guy who's already been through it before.

Pies haven't done too well out of the 2013 draft. Scharenberg can barely get onto the park, nor could Freeman before he decided his 0 games should earn him a pay-rise and starting 22 position (really glad we took Salem over this self-entitled twerp)

Seems to me a lot more research needs to be done to determine the predisposition some players have to this terrible injury.

Logic (and reports I've read) says that given the amount of prized midfielders Collingwood have brought in he was going to struggle for opportunity, and there was also talk of him being offered a pretty massively cut contract to fit those guys in. Now, if that was your job, if you'd been asked to take a pay cut so that people better at your job could come in and take all the opportunities, would you be happy?

I just looked at Freeman's choices. Play under Buckley for less money/opportunities vs Play under Richardson for more money/opportunities. Pretty easy decision for mine.

Plus they mis-managed Freeman's injury in the first place. "Here's a paycut because our medics made a mistake...."

Geez I'd hate to be a footballer with all the scrutiny these days, people who have no idea make character assignations with half facts and just assume the rest. The media & Pies did a good job at covering that part of him being disgruntled with the club up.

I think you should reserve these comments/sentiments for blokes like Scully & Boyd, both of whom have have a very cushy ride in the media despite the lack of value for $$ they provide their teams.

Btw, very sad news re Scharenberg, even though he plays for scum, he was a ripper prospect from what I saw before he got drafted. I really thought he could've been the steal of his draft year if it weren't for his injuries.

Not that I disagree with what you're saying re opportunities, but as a base first contract out from the draft his base wage is set and fairly minimal. Can't get much lower unless he was de-listed and given a rookie contract, granted I believe first round draftees get a small bonus for being picked earlier. Opportunities and injury management of course are other issues but if his salary was a factor in leaving it would be more likely that St Kilda are offering greater than his old contract rather than Collingwood reducing it.

Edit: Feel for Scharenberg, must be hard knowing you'll be missing an entire season before the new year has even come around.

Hope he doesn't end like an other Collingwood boy - Lee Walker 4 x reco's, looked like he could have been anything back in the 90's. We were fricken stiff with Schwarta, The Pies were just as stiff when it came to Walker.

Not as bad but Mitch Duncan at the Cats has to have another Achilles operation. Modern medicine says that you can be back training after that sort of surgery in about a month but it can be a nasty injury and it all depends on whether you have a good rehab.

He'd finished his initial contract though, so Collingwood would have been in negotiations with him and his management about the new one. With players like Cloke, Pendles, Swan, Sidebottom etc already on pretty big deals, and then attracting Adams, Treloar, Greenwood, Howe, can't imagine they were exactly throwing cash at Freeman.
