Terrific stuff Pickett. A bit of mayo thrown in there with the wording too, I like it. But I STILL have the urge to put the gun-to-your-head question... I'll hold off for now though.

OH YES THERE IS! lol

Like Pickett, I'll be putting that question to you if we all live long enough to see Clarrie retire in the Red and Blue one day and get to take stock.

You've more or less answered it for now. Robbie the best you've ever seen play the game? Says enough.

And yes, great point on Ollie. If we want to break down players into types... Neitz is still the #1 KP forward. Hogan isn't there yet, and I suspect won't get there. Schwartz would have beaten Neitz by a nose... enough's been said on that topic. What Ollie does, though... Here's yet another way to look at it... You know how we're a poor club, and other clubs get these logic-defying players... Voss, Hird, Sam Mitchell, Ablett jr, Dangerfield, Fyfe... These absolute magicians that play the game in a way you don't really understand... Watching those guys as an opposition fan, you never really knew what it was like to be a fan of their club. We had so many stalwarts. Proud players who did more than I'll ever do... But we never had anything like this. And it's not a one-off year for him, or a short burst of brilliance. The whole league has taken notice inside of 50 games. Elite really isn't a big enough word. Some of the stuff he does... No-one else in the league does. You're absolutely right... If you really feel every possession that MFC gets, then watching him is a kind of joy none of us have ever known, other than when watching other club's players with a healthy dose of envy.

Oliver has more grunt than R Flower and his awareness of where the ball is and where team mates are around him is superb

Robbie had amazing skills, grace and balance throughout his entire 14 year career

Oliver will be offered $1.5m p.a by another team (most likely Norf) before his contract is up.

He is the superstar that 18 teams are looking for.

No doubt about that, hopefully he stays happy where he is

I noticed that and was annoyed on Sunday but then I realized he was doing it to try and gain separation a moment later. It might not work every time but he seemed to engage in a scrag, causing his opponent to stop watching the ball, then use that moment to push off his opponent or nudge his opponent under the back and turn back himself. It didn't work even the back dropped in front of him because then he wasn't able to push off.

So might be atactic.  Might also just be poor behavior.

You see in one of the qtrs he engages Yeo, forces him closer to the rucks then breaks back as Max hits the ball to the outside instead of down, so I think he is trying to do it more in those situations where Max might have indicated a bigger hit?

He'd be happy with a new ute, a McDonalds gift voucher and a drinks card at 21st Century in Frankston...

Sad to report that the 21st Century is no longer.  The revolving dancefloor has turned it's last turn.

Takes two to tango

Partly it is to shake an oftentimes illegal hold by a tagger

Maybe we are being over spoiled by how good Clarry is, but today in spite of another hard tag... he still accumulated 30 disposals and with direct involvement with many goals scored.

Let me put it this way. a lot of  times he disposed of the ball .. we got a goal!

Clarry Choo Choo at his best!

And in return we will ask for 58 first round draft picks and their best five players in a trade.

Oliver's not going anywhere.

At this rate he will finish his career as the best player to pull on the red and blue in my lifetime. He's phenomenal and still underrated by the wider football community somehow!

Surely MFC chooses Oliver ahead of Parish.

Oliver is like Wines... a COMPETITOR.

Pollyanna might have to note all the positive call outs made over many years on many players. Many suggested the Dees wanted Parish and so we called out for Oliver.
We didn’t want the Toumpas ahead of Wines decision again.

Recruitment is an inexact science SONS. No need to defend your honour.  We’ll all get our fair share of calls wrong.

Thanks for posting all the great information on draft prospects. Keep it coming!

But LT Clarry can go To another level to not just a Demonngreat but AFL hero by damaging the opposition by run snd foot carry plus kicking more goals when we rest him up forward in the future !

We can also happily pick out the amount of blunders you've had on here too if you'd like? And you've had your fair share trust me.

Why this thread needed to be brought up from 2 years ago I have no idea.

It was the stone throwing that raised this thread. You get some right and wrong but you are entitled to an opinion.  Pollyanna had dredged up old posts that we had doubts on LJ.   Other calls still spot on.

Collingwood traded Treloar, Stephenson and Philips next to nothing  lost big time IMV They are a shambles. Overpaying. over the  Cap and Morale.  Managing to stay under the salary cap. How much can you pay someone without ruffling the feathers of his team mates?

IMO  Oliver would be well compensated with in reason at Melbourne and  he would more likely stay.

AGree that the damaging by foot is not his strength and his status until then will not be in the 'Great' category.

It reminds of a comment once by kevin Sheedy, when he said he didn't necessarily count all of Robert harvey's disposals as meaningful, and was happy that he got them where he did - in non- damaging areas of the field.

You need to watch Clarry closer, he does so many great things already

He’s as good as any midfielder in the comp

I still think his kicking is underrated. His kicking is mostly solid and I saw him deliver a couple of beautifully weighted 40/50m lace out kicks to leading forwards at Metricon against Essendon in the last game. The problem is he is still susceptible to the odd complete shank when trying to rush and be too cute.

Ive said all along once he takes a little more time with the ball, he will go to another level, which he did for a period in the middle of the year. They should be making him watch that vision repeatedly this off season.

And if he can find a way to hit the scoreboard more, up close to a goal a game, he would be in the top handful in the comp.

Sometime the bumping of these threads are unnecessarily vindictive.
I always love reading through them (especially ones where I haven't made a goose of myself.).

It's great that people are willing to offer their opinions and no one is right every time.
These threads are always a good read to put yourself back in the time and place and see how views change (some very quickly).

Never take a backward step TPF39. Clarry was always the one we wanted in red and blue. Clarry. Trac.  Riv. Intensity is the key. No more Grgic, Toumpas, Morton type picks.

Lets look at scoreboard pressure - a amjor  sign of a great midfielder.

1 goal in every 3 games,

In comparison, Kevin Bartlett, 1.9 goals per game albeit he played later as a forward,

Gary Ablett Jnr.  - 1.3 goals per game, accuracy

Even Craig Bradly - 2 gaols avey 3 games.

Oliver is top notch for endeavour and courage, and is a serious acumulatr and initiator of moves to the outside, but gee I wish he would hacve more impact that his numbers suggest he could.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
