Best strategy has to be take best available, regardless of postional need.

In this era of player movement, a graders are 'currency'. we can always trade out surplus a graders for proven players of a certain position the following year.

    A friend's son has played in games with Weideman and says he is fearless and backs into packs or runs with the flight of the ball, like Carey did.

    Says he has kicked 5 goals in a quarter in an AIS game.

    Says he is the real deal.

    I don't see him getting past Essendon.

    If this is correct ^ ^ ^, (I haven't seen any draftee possibilities except for vid's)... then I would definately take him at P-3, hands down. we need a partner for Hogan who has the guts qualities like this.

    & forget about the pie heritage; we cannot run this club like that... either 'we back ourselves in now', or we may as well fold. Because not backing ourselves, is the cowardly approach we've been hindered by, for too many decades already.

    Callum Twomey on AFL radio during the trade period said that he genuinely believes that if not for his injury Weideman would be ranked No 2 in this draft. He is a big wrap for him. Most BF phantom drafts have him a fair bit lower. Watch for Callum's final Phantom update on the AFL website close to draft day. He usually gets close to the mark. I guess he gets a bit of information etc from clubs. So I am not surprised by Redlegs comments regarding his information. Backs up Callum's 'big' statement. on trade radio.

    If Weideman is that good then we would have to take him at pick 3, play him at FF and let Hogan slaughter the opposition as a higher CHF.

    Terrific young prospect who we just didn't get to see enough of this year but the little we did was super impressive at times.He also showed us a fair bit last year as a bottom ager and suspect had Gary Pert trying to get grandsons included in the F/S rules. Presents as the best tall forward in this draft albeit Harry McKay pretty close for mine. Sam is a natural forward unlike guys like Boyd etc who have been drafted high in previous years. I think coaches really value key forwards that haven't got their success camped in the goal square clunking marks but rather kids who understand how, when and where to lead. He has real speed and many will find it hard to close space on him once he is ahead of them. Once he has the space ahead of him he will use his long arms and good hands to clunk them and his finishing is generally pretty good albeit has scope for some improvement. The knock I have on him is his consistency but that happens a lot with young talls and his kicking at times is a bit erratic. Loads of potential for mine.

    Next best kid for mine is Clayton Oliver which would have taken if Melbourne needed another mid but they need a tall forward and hence only other consideration was Harry McKay who was bloody close.

    this alone is a part of our soft culture, expecting one or two, to be hard & the others to suit themselves, IF they are skilled. Not good enough this way. Players must be well rounded, & 'go' when its the turn to 'go'.

    ... we have seen in recent times the kids we recruited who entered a culture with senior players like, yze, robbo, green, bruce, davey,... the kids like newton, watts, morton, bennell, cook, gysberts, howe, toump;

    .....the culture learn't from the get go, lasts thru careers, & is like soap scum on the shower glass, you can never really get it all out.

    Sorry my bad, both would have been very handy on our list, but neither would have been what Danners had in mind.

    With the benefit of hindsight it is easy for us to criticise the coach for interfering, but specifying a type isn't the same as picking a name, and whatever else you can say about the process, Danners was acutely aware of the weakness inherent in our list at the time. I would think that many other coaches have done the same thing, but probably none had the misfortune of having that pick suffer as badly from injury as Luke Molan.

    Dissapointing for you, probably not murphy considering the career he would have had if he came here

    Correct and he was tough, he just copped some awful injuries.

    The Reverend did our club proud. Several times. Not just his coaching, but coaching a club in difficult times, a club under re-sourced, lacking AFL standard facilities at the Junction. Also his promotion of our club and helping increase membership. He knew putting us in a better position financially allowed the club to compete, despite a ball and chain around it's neck holding us back financially. ie. getting rookies such as Aaron Davey onto our list.

      The Casey Demons were always expected to emerge victorious in their matchup against the lowly-ranked Sydney Swans at picturesque Tramway Oval, situated in the shadows of the SCG in Moore Park. They dominated the proceedings in the opening two and a half quarters of the game but had little to show for it. This was primarily due to their own sloppy errors in a low-standard game that produced a number of crowded mauls reminiscent of the rugby game popular in old Sydney Town. However, when the Swans tired, as teams often do when they turn games into ugly defensive contests, Casey lifted the standard of its own play and … it was off to the races. Not to nearby Randwick but to a different race with an objective of piling on goal after goal on the way to a mammoth victory. At the 25-minute mark of the third quarter, the Demons held a slender 14-point lead over the Swans, who are ahead on the ladder of only the previous week's opposition, the ailing Bullants. Forty minutes later, they had more than fully compensated for the sloppiness of their earlier play with a decisive 94-point victory, that culminated in a rousing finish which yielded thirteen unanswered goals. Kicks hit their targets, the ball found itself going through the middle and every player made a contribution.

      Hands up if you thought, like me, at half-time in yesterday’s game at TIO Traeger Park, Alice Springs that Melbourne’s disposal around the ground and, in particular, its kicking inaccuracy in front of the goals couldn’t get any worse. Well, it did. And what’s even more damning for the Melbourne Football Club is that the game against St Kilda and its resurgence from the bottomless pit of its miserable start to the season wasn’t just lost through poor conversion for goal but rather in the 15 minutes when the entire team went into a slumber and was mugged by the out-of-form Saints. Their six goals two behinds (one goal less than the Demons managed for the whole game) weaved a path of destruction from which they were unable to recover. Ross Lyon’s astute use of pressure to contain the situation once they had asserted their grip on the game, and Melbourne’s self-destructive wastefulness, assured that outcome. The old adage about the insanity of repeatedly doing something and expecting a different result, was out there. Two years ago, the score line in Melbourne’s loss to the Giants at this same ground was 5 goals 15 behinds - a ratio of one goal per four scoring shots - was perfectly replicated with yesterday’s 7 goals 21 behinds. 
      This has been going on for a while and opens up a number of questions. I’ll put forward a few that come to mind from this performance. The obvious first question is whether the club can find a suitable coach to instruct players on proper kicking techniques or is this a skill that can no longer be developed at this stage of the development of our playing group? Another concern is the team's ability to counter an opponent's dominance during a run on as exemplified by the Saints in the first quarter. Did the Demons underestimate their opponents, considering St Kilda's goals during this period were scored by relatively unknown forwards? Furthermore, given the modest attendance of 6,721 at TIO Traeger Park and the team's poor past performances at this venue, is it prudent to prioritize financial gain over potentially sacrificing valuable premiership points by relinquishing home ground advantage, notwithstanding the cultural significance of the team's connection to the Red Centre?
