Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Where do you think we would be if we stuck with Bailey but made all the front office/personnel (Misson/Jackson/Bartlett) changes that we have to this day?

I think the Bulldogs are pretty much doing what Bailey was trying to do, only 4 years later.

I often wonder what would have happened if the club stuck to their guns by getting rid of Schwab instead of Bailey.

I'm sure they got rid of the wrong man...and a lot of the undermining in the media came from CS man Lyon.

In a hell of lot better place than we are now.

I loved Bailey we were playing some exciting footy that was actually worth going to the footy. We had some big wins that i enjoyed and some heavy losses. But with a young side you expect those losses.

Its no coincidence that Trengove Grimes Gysberts Jurrah Frawley were playing career best football under him.

Even to this day after the Daniher era Bailey was the next best coach we had.

On james mcdonald sacking Bailey wanted him to stay for another year and thats why the 1 year deal was offered only for Connelly and Schwab to back flip and pull out. Bailey and Jnr were filthy with Cam and Chris and this what ramped up an already brewing fued.

There's no way the AFL would have parachuted Jackson in unless we were as deplorable as we were.

I liked Dean Bailey.. He at least we took the game on and we kicked goals when he was coach. We were watchable and played some exciting footy.

Only reason he was sacked was because of the pathetic 'leaders' we had at the club at the time who were responsible for 186 and the rotten culture we are still trying to fix.

I'm starting to get a bit tired of hypotheticals regards this footy club.

I hope winning regularly puts an end to it.

Counterfactual history- is there any point to it?

Thanks for the contribution grazman.

No there isn't really a point to it. But there isn't really a point to anybody commenting on or choosing their ins and outs each week either because we aren't part of the selection committee but it still happens.

Not sure why people on here are so happy to chime in with opinions that don't contribute to discussions in any way. If you don't like the thread, don't click on it, and certainly don't feel the need to post something.

After 186 Sadly Bails had to go. What could you say to a bunch of players after that non performance?

But Schwab should have been sitting at the same press conference

For him to be at the helm another 18 months after 186 makes me very angry

Bailey?

I think he had his good points and bad. Defensive game needed a lot of work, Offensively he was ahead of his time.

I remember watching "On the Couch", Roos was scathing with his criticism of Bailey claiming he was not keeping up with the then current trend which was very defensive. Bailey created a game plan which suited the list at his disposal which happened to be similar to the one Clarkson adopted.

They were both colleagues at Port Adelaide at some stage I believe.

I've always thought that the best offensive team I've seen were the 1989 Geelong side.

The best defensive side were the 2009 Saints.

If they squared off against each other in a Grand Final....what philosophy would win?

Blight / Bailey 's offence vs. Lyon / Neeld / Roos defence?

Just goes to show that you cannot be entrenched in one philosophy but have to be masters of both and there is the issue.

You need a game plan that is both offensive / defensive at the same time (eg. Clarkson's Cluster / Spatial Zoning @ West Coast).

We are getting there with a possession based defence established with a semi-slingshot / run and carry offence.

Issue is the two way gut running required won't be there for at least 2 years with the current squad.

Coached a team that played the best single game of footy I have seen for a long, long time, especially in red and blue colours.

Problem with our recruiting was that he went for mostly outside midfielders with our top picks, that could run all day, and were fairly quick too. He didn't specifically target the inside grunt to get the ball out to these runners, and the ones he did pick up were no good.

Ironically, the team we beat in my opening paragraph were one of the better contested teams going around.

I think Bails was a pretty good coach, and had the players chosen to make the same statement in a different way at Geelong, we will never know what could've been.

Either both had to go or just Schwab had to go. But either way Schwab had to go. Gary lyon was a brilliant player and deserves to e a club legend but his off field input has really hurt us. FIrst he talked jimmy out of sacking both together and then he hired Neeld on the word of Malthouse. Which all lead to the darkest chapter in this clubs history. In hindsight now, Bailey was ahead of his time and we have only been able to dream of his moderate success since. What a crap time to follow this club.

I think the damage had been done before that 'SWYL', but the players did him no favours at Geelong.

The Board, Lyon & Schwab have a lot to answer for.

I wish i could find the interview Mike Shehan did with Brad Green in the days before 186. On the couch i think

It was a volcano waiting to erupt. Mike Shehan knew it So did Greeny, but he couldn't say a lot.

I wish it was still online. Seems to have disappeared...

The damage started earlier for sure. When Schwab realized his grand plan was a complete fail. He went into damage control.

But the situation blew up at Kardinia Park and the problem kept his job...

Some interesting comments in this thread about Bailey's game plan suiting the players at his disposal, and having a game plan that was ahead of its time.

Contrast that to Roos who employs a game plan blatantly unsuited to his list, and one which seems to be from a bygone era.

As others have said, our good days in 2010 were the best of any time in the past decade. They seem a long time ago now.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
