1) Why did Salem start at half-forward when god knows we are the only side not to have a left-footer down back?

2) Why did we persisit with a forward 50 zone defence in the last term, when we were trailing?

3) Why is Missen still at the club?

Nothing will change without radical list management.

I want Goodwin to succeed but this group of players will kill his career

SWY with respect this group of players would kill anyone's career although for mine you can have a horrible team which we do, but you can still get them to give a rats ass on gameday.

PR hasn't and doesn't appear to be capable of getting them to do that.

He has failed in the first basic principle of a AFL coach, which is to get his players to turn up mentally and fight the game out from the first bounce on match day.

And then there's the match day itself

Seems to get beaten too easily on basic issues on match day this season eg., the "loose man" issue on multiple occasions (cost us the game or at least a close finish on QB), failing to "flood" (or drill the flood procedure into the team) when in front with only a few minutes to go, failing to instill the early/quick kick into a one on one when Hulk is clearly one out, failing to produce an effective forward structure that sees players seperating from their opponents/leading into space/clearing out of space for Hulk/Dawes/Jeffy to run into or double back into, failing to see players regularly get front and square of KPF in the marking contests up forward, failing to halt an opponent when they begin getting a run on, failing to instill or implement an effective forward press that lasts more than 10 minutes or so for the odd quarter here and there, inability to maintain possession when moving the ball up the field resulting in constant turnovers gifting the opposition easy goals like we saw all day today etc.

Dee with regard to No.2 you are spot on brother.

Unfortunately that's how we started the match also. Giving the worst team in the comp plenty of space to run freely and find their next hit up target by hand and foot. They were abe to share the ball around the back with little or no pressure, bringing many of their players into the game, giving them touch and boosting their confidence to run, carry and share the ball as they waltzed through our defence.

Our coaching crew allowed our players to play the worst team in the comp as if they were playing the best (Hawks/Coasters/Freeo etc), paying them way too much respect and basically gifting them the game from the get go.

Horrible horrible coaching.

Geelong in their hey day (and i have heard first hand ex players from this era state this on media on a number of occasions) that they always shared the ball around amongst as many players as they could as early as they could, giving as many players as possible an early touch, getting most of their boys involved and boosting their confidence/disposal as well as instilling quick movement of ball out of congestion and quickly forward of play on the overlap (where possible). Making most of the team feel as if they were in the game from the get go....and they were (as we all witnessed far too often).

Couldn't have started and continued with a worse strategy versus an equally inept insipid club (until today). Giving a team on such a low ebb so much space and respect was always a recipe for disastor and we do this far too often against mediocre clubs. We often hear our supporters state (when Melbourne plays an out of form club) ... "we played them into form". Today is a classic example of how the MFC (FD & players) allow this to happen to them time and time again against even the worst out of form Clubs at their lowest ebb during a season.

Roos isn't the problem - the problem is the list he inherited. Look back on the last 10 drafts and see the quality of players we selected or traded into the MFC. And don't start me on Neeld and co selections....

Hawthorn in 2004 finished with 4 wins (the list that year had Luke Hodge, Sam Mitchell, Trent Croad, Campbell Brown, Chance Bateman, Brad Sewell to name a few and they picked up Roughead and Franklin at the end of the year), 2005 finished with 5 wins (picked up Xavier Ellis and Grant Birchnell), 2006 finished with 9 wins (got Cyril), then 2007 finished with 13 wins. They have actually done well with the trades into the club with Gibson, Burgoyne, Gunston. Some of their other draft picks ended up being no good. But they started off with a good base of players

Roos has already got rid of 22 of the original 44 on the list and more will go this year. He is also trying to change a game style and attitude at the same time.

Which players of the original group are B or above quality...Jones on his good days, Kent maybe, Watts getting there now that he has the Roos influence, ...and now I am starting the struggle. Lots of C grade players

He has added a number of good players already to the list and developed some of the others - the whispers also have a couple of interesting targets to be traded into Melbourne.

Remember without the AFL help of getting in Jackson and Roos the club would probably have just about folded by now.

Maybe anyone, even perhaps Neeld, could have got a flag out of that Swans' list, and maybe therefore Roos isn't a great messianic coach after all.

He may be frustrated, but he hasn't been following this rabble for 50+ years.

I'm not sure what he can do at them to be honest. He is damned if he does and he is damned if he doesn't.
If he tries to deflect blame, he is pilloried for it (and I can understand a bit why). He tells the truth as he did today then he gets told it's his job to fix it.
Very little of what he said I disagree with. The line 'Melbourne fans deserve better' was probably the most damning thing I have heard him say since that round 2 loss to West Coast.

It's a bit of a deflection from what you said WYL but I should add that the sad thing about this situation is that we have had blokes bought into the club like George Stone and Brendan McCartney at various points in addition to experienced assistants like Simon Goodwin, Jade Rawlings and Brett Allison. I'm convinced it's the lack of onfield leadership. We have no one that sets the tone in matches, so everyone falls to pieces when the going gets tough. They've no one to look to and end up playing for themselves. We need to buy leaders. I'm not sure we can wait three years for our young stars to take over the leadership mantle. Next year is really when it has to start.

He won one flag on the back of a Leo Barry mark, everyone's goes on about what a legendary coach he is, he won one flag" thought he was just jealous we signed him but maybe he was right. Why was Gawn left forward to continually crash into Hogan and spoil him time & time again. I know gawn was getting belted in the ruck and they had nothing else to do with him but he spoilt hogan 3-4 times in the last quarter and a half... So dumb just leaving him there

Roos is struggling with what appear to me to be some pretty fundamental aspects of coaching. But no point 'comparing' him to newbie coaches at different clubs. You might not like it, but you have to consider our club in light of our history, and the damage the previous two regimes did.

My friend, this is not a main coaching issue. This is just teething problems between 2 guys who have really just come on the scene this year. I am sure with time, leading patterns will get better; and alternate leading will occur etc...

If it is a coaching issue, it is a forward-line-coaching issue.

Tell your mate that after Daniher, we got an untried coach in Bailey who offered up 186. Then we got another untried coach in Neeld who was worse.

Another untried coach could have finished the club.

Hence the big-name coach. At that point it didn't really matter who. Someone who could lend some credibiilty, calm the jangled nerves, pat everyone on the tummy and generally steady the ship.

And the ship has been steadied. I just wish we hadn't dropped the anchor too.

At least those 2 contested. My concern was with the rest who did not attack the ball, chase or tackle and when they occasionally did gain possession turned it over with school boy skill errors.

on TripleM yesterday they said that there is expected to be a big announcement in the offseason re: Melbournes coaching and that Goodwin will indeed take over as senior coach a year earlier than planned

I did enjoy it when Goodwin in the Dogs game said something at half time ... just get your hands on the footy ... something simple and positive ... and the players responded. Too little too late but it did seem to have an immediate impact.

Agree 100% with the bolded part. But I am sick of waiting for it to turn as you are.

There are plenty here with blinkers on when it has been obvious for at least 4months that Roos doesn't know what to do with this mob.

Our best performance for the year was when the players coached themselves for a week. What does that say about the coaching? He's given them a week off after a belting, taken them to the movies. I mean FFS its not a complicated game. You bring effort and focus on running and winning contested ball for a start, then you hit targets.

There are probably 5 players on our list that can safely beat their man on any given day,

leadership is non existent.

Garland and Lumumba are frankly pathetic footballers that shouldn't be there.

McDonald is a goer but whne he has the ball in hand is a worry.

Dunn has lost his ability to win a one on one.

Midfield is appalling. Viney tries hard but makes way too many basic errors.

Vince got thrashed against a first year player. We are robbing peter to pay Paul

Jones is courageous but unable to drag his players with him.

Cross is done. Way too many mistakes.

Watts just infuriates me the way he plays 5-10m off his man. Morton used to the same thing. You can see the play unfold and lay money on his man geting the ball.

Gawn can't ruck by himself all day and is not flexible enough. Kruezer beat him handsomely.

Howe should just fark off now. Most overated player on our list (by outsiders not necessarily melbourne supporters)

Dawes has to go. Adds zero to the team.

Garlett plays when he wants to.

Brayshaw was looking pretty spent,. Needs a rest

Grimes Mitchie and newton are triers but not the answer.

And none of these useless hacks can play a team game. They don't look out for each other shepherd, don't spread, can't read the play. Hopeless.

The coach is clueless as to how to fix this. Good luck trying to atract a decent midfielder to our team this year paul.

At the ground, the lack of shepherding stands out like the dogs proverbials.

Again and again and again. Guy will draw his opponent, handball to a teammate and then jog along watching while his teammate is attacked by the same opponent. Teammate then kicks under pressure, and Hogan marks it on his chest and slams it through for a goal.

Why put in and win at Geelong etc if it is the coach who is the problem?

I wanted stability at the club and to keep growing but I'd the playing group won't respond get a new playing group
