Special mention to Jack Viney in the GF.  Big 2nd half. He was huge in the centre square and started most of those clearances that led to the quick goals at the end of the 3rd with either first touches or just bulldozing to make space. Key part of the turnaround.

12 clearances.

I don’t want to pick on certain people that doubted this bloke but you don’t know footy.

If you doubt this bloke - you don’t know footy.

He is one of immense character and fight.

Jack Viney makes me cry…

Viney will improve as well. Now the pressure is off he is one we have that could be more settled now. Did a lot of 1% plays tonight. Be hard to find more sacrificial players than Viney and Brayshaw.

Both were amazing tonight🥰

That play though.

Viney’s bulldozer tackle, where he stays upright and impacts the immediate next contest. The small forwards all looking for each other in traffic, the vision and skill of Bedford to get it to the only person inside 50 in some space in Spargo, who has time, and nails it. Pure.

That was surreal.

Viney flattened him, didn't break stride; just kept running.  Literally ran through him as if he wasn't there.

That was one of the really great performances by an individual last night.  Right up there with Gawn's game against the Swans, some of Oliver's and Petracca's dominant performances.  It was everything that you'd expect from a club leader and more, and a reminder, if we needed it, as to why this guy is so important if we are to go back to back.

Totally agree with this - set the standard for others to follow and didn’t let up for one moment - incredible and inspiring

Not gonna say this was the best game I've seen Viney play. That's dumb. However it was probably the best 'in and under' game I've seen him play. He bounced around like a pinball and he would dive for the ball in a contest he'd be back up with it in no time. Tackled hard and got stuck in immediately when Bedford got taken out. A true skipper's game, looking forward to him leading team out over the next month.

What really impressed about Viney's game was not only were his tackles brutal, he kept his feet and found space after a contested possession enabling him to compose and find a target.  His disposal was excellent.

That's it Luci, I can't quite describe it but it felt like he was playing in a jumping castle and was able to bounce back up to his feet no matter how hard he fought for the ball. He would get that yard of space and deliver, he could literally do no wrong in that area!

Remember when people always said Viney was like a Rugby player who always tried to drive through tackles with the footy? Tell you what they had a tough time even laying a glove on him last night!

Kiddy Coleman will remember that for a bit.

Career best form since the Eagles game. By the numbers he has been a top 5 midfielder since then, but there has also been a quality to those numbers. Getting a few quick evasive steps in, keeping his feet in tackles that take the opponent off their feet, and a mental state of continuous hunting.

Looks like poor Clayton has yet another team mate who will be 'stealing' Brownlow votes off him.

I got quite worried when he grabbed the top of his hamstring.  Very relieved it was a corky.

He was superb though for all the reasons mentioned above.  I loved his couple of fend offs also 💪 🤛.

That was an most inspirational captains game rivaling Max’s 2021 PF v Cats.

Made me cry tears of joy.  🤣😂

It was very unique to other games he's played that's for sure!

He said in an interview recently , that we haven’t seen the best of him yet.

Looks like it has arrived.

  • REPORT: Port Adelaide

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
