Thanks Grapeviney.

Here's something I didn't dare write recently.  I've noticed that when trying to mark deep on the forward line he often seems to run under the ball a bit.   Am I alone? incorrect?  If correct, any speculation on why?

He definitely does but it's not through not reading the ball, he's very good at knowing when to put a block on so Gawn or Watts can take a grab

Some questions for you to ponder: what if he plays a shocker this week because he is not properly prepared and it costs us the game? With all the effort that goes into conditioning the players... do you think that is good practice for the club to be engaged with? Bowing down to the needs of an individual at the expense of the side? Does that sound like typical Roos behaviour? Is it good culture to have star players calling the shots or should they be subservient to the bigger system? Like I said from the start, there is something unusual going on here, which is not good, simple as that.

Not sure if this has been mentioned at all after your post, because I'm catching up with the thread, but this will give Jesse a sample of the rigours of playing with a WA side. There is a lot of travel involved and after travelling to Qld. last game he's travelled across country to see his folks, wonder how he feels now and if he'd be happy to do it every second week.

he's young, and doing it socially a handful of times well before a game probably means little to him

Smart clubs build around more than 1 player and if we are to win a flag it wont be solely because of Jesse Hogan, whatever hole he leaves will be filled it may take time but it will be filled

Thanks PD, i value your views particularly on WA related matters (eg on WA players).

Given what i have read and heard about Jesse it It doesn't surprise me in the least that a big factor in his decision will family related. However my guess its not about being away from his family (as might have been the case with Jimmy Toumpas) but more about his familial responsibilities.

This actually gives me more confidence he will stay as the club has shown a clear commitment to support this responsibility (not just this year but from the get go) and with a four month end of season break and the world being closer than ever thank to technology he can manage those responsibilities sort of stuff (as opposed to say homesickness).

But as you say what will be will be.

I've been in Russia this week. It took me 6 hours to download the second half of the game against the GC. What a win!

Putin seems to not care for Jesse Hogan, so can someone summarize for me what all the drama is about? Has he gone to Perth to "look at the facilities"?

I understand there are possibly underlying personal reasons for Jesse being afforded trips home to Perth periodically, however would other WA born players (any interstate players) on our list be granted the same if they requested it?

Full credit to the club for managing Jesse to the best of their ability in order to keep him happy, but is it potentially to the detriment of other players?

I honestly don't know and it is a genuine question on my behalf.

We need to retain him, but I hope it's not egg shell stuff going on....the tail should not be wagging this new dog!

I'd be surprised if this is a luxury they only give to Jesse,  problem is he is the big story and the media are using the visit to fuel speculation and keep the drama alive.

I'm not worrying until it rolls into 2017 and there's no signature.  Fwiw I'm very confident he loves it here and sees how [censored] great we are going to be and it's only a matter of time till he signs,  and if not,  well  we take the juicy juicy compo and keep doing what we've done for the last 150 years and move on.

From my viewing (all on tv, so I appreciate that I may be very wrong), he seems to prefer to get into a one-on-one contest rather than to lead at the ball carrier. I don't know whether this is a result of the poor delivery to him last season or whether he thinks he's a better chance of marking in a contest rather than getting a nice laces out pass when he leads, but it has choked up our ball movement a bit this season when entering 50 as players often fall into the trap of bombing it long onto his head rather than trying to hit the target properly. It also doesn't help that opposition defences know that he's a good contested mark, so when they see the ball coming in high and deep they double, triple and quadruple team him, making it nearly impossible for him to take a mark.

After half time last week we seemed to really open up our forward line and not bomb it long to the top of the square every time we entered our 50, and we reaped the rewards of doing so. I think ultimately it's best to have Hogan playing in his more natural CHF position to prevent these goal square wrestling matches and to force him to lead at the ball carrier.

We can't afford to lose him but can we afford to keep him, with him we could be genuine contenders in the next couple of years but we need to continue to improve our win - loss ratio to give us the impetus to hold the group together. I would hate to see our group picked off one by one because we failed to reach our full potential. Jesse find a great Melbourne girl, settle down and STAY!!! All non Melbourne supporters and commentators are stirring the pot, I get it every day at work it is cruelty and malice all rolled in one. The Club have to find a way to keep him.

Jesse's circumstances are unfortunately different at this point in time. I'd suggest that Jesse will be getting back to Perth a little bit more before the year is out.

You've mentioned this twice now. Reading skills not a strength?

This thread is now just for talking about Jesse and his exploits ON the field. The other is for all matters OFF the field. I thought Grape made this pretty clear.

can't wait to see how he goes tomorrow.

as a matter of interest, does anyone know how much training he's done this week?

jonno brown raised an interesting point re tex walker last nite, that because he's carrying an injury and not training, his 'touch' is slightly off as a result of the lack of bal-lhandling during the week. he reckons it's particularly true for power forwards - they need the slap of leather on hands throughout the week in order to feel comfortable reading the flight of the pill etc.

i wonder how much that is true.

also: i love jesse hogan in this 'good vibes' thread.

I am Gob smacked by the number of times the Dogs throw the ball in close and get a free's for wriggle down once the tackle has been applied. disgraceful.

Another nearly day for Hogan, i thought he worked hard, competed well in the air and took some good grabs and looked dangerous but couldn't finish off his work.

2.6 over two weeks isn't good enough from any forward. Kicking needs work, or something is off. He kicked 7.1 only a couple of weeks ago.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
