Wonder who gave the GC players votes?

Not that hard to work out that both coaches gave the 2 Suns players 1 point each. No bias as implied.

Thanks for putting words in my mouth but was not implying bias at all, rather who Roos felt was the better GC player.

Nice try though.

His running and off the ball stuff is fantastic. Not huge stats but his influence is big,,

He was very vocal.

As a forward, you must love HL. He can sometimes be iffy by foot but the one certainty is if he gets the ball, he will play on and he will provide quick entry into the forward 50 - something a forward loves.

Just watching the replay now. Crossy has had a shocking first quarter with the ball. Hacking it around. The first quarter in general has been pretty terrible. Watts with a couple of errors. Tommy McDonald playing on under pressure. Newton with a terrible kick. Plenty more. For us to be up at quarter time showed our defensive effort was good but Gold Coast were pretty dreadful. I'm excited for 3 better quarters to come!

I really like Cross and think he adds a lot to our midfield but he was below par on the weekend..

Yeah I agree. I finished watching the replay last night and it has tempered my excitement a little bit. Still quite a few basic skill errors throughout the game and we had a bit of luck going our way at times. If Ablett hadn't missed that handball in the goal square in the last quarter things might have gone quite differently. Will be really interesting to see if we can back up this week, and the following weeks will really test us to see how much we have improved. But bringing back Vince and Dawes should provide some extra experience and skill which should help our cause.

Jamar dominating the second quarter. The brilliant play of Howe to Garland to JKH to Tyson was a little fluky I think. The Howe kick was ridiculous, should've just rushed it! The Tyson candy sell a bit fancy as well when he had open numbers all around him. But oh well. Liking this quarter a lot more than the first! Newton hasn't got in to the game with attack yet, but his contested work has been great. Poor defensive effort from JKH on Saad costs a goal. Just in love with the way Vandenberg moves around the contest, using his frame and his legs to get the ball to the next option as soon as he's got it. Only mistake he's made so far was pass to a 1 on 1 when he was on the run inside 50 and could've just pulled the trigger.

In addition to Hogan's great work up forward, I thought he didn't look out of place during his forays into the middle of the ground too. His vision and hand seemed quite good for a big fella.

ya gotta remember the first round of afl will always have lots of mistakes

still (errors and all) i thought melbourne played better and with better skills overall than any game last year

keep it in perspective.....can only get better

Seventy-five per cent is a good AFL efficiency, but it still means you make 1 'error' in 4.

As for the first quarter of the year, it's like boxers circling each other in the first round. Not much happening, not many punches thrown. I wouldn't read too much into it.

I guess some people are eternal pessimists. Years of abject disappointment will do that.

Just be grateful for a win to make your week.

Completely agree. But when you've only seen the highlights package watching the whole game provides a different perspective...still lots of reasons to get excited though, and gives me a reason to be happy for once about returning to Australia at the end of June.

.Salem's mark of a skied ball

This was excellent. He does these (not so) little competetive things that remind me of Luke Hodge.

Yes if it had of been against a top 8 or top 4 side we may have been staring down the barrel after the first turn. Our skills, maybe it was nerves early, still need a fair polish. Overall the defensive and then offensive running was our big advantage over the Suns.

I thought our toughness was great too, both in terms of winning the contest ball but also when putting pressure on the kicker. Particularly loved when Kent smashed Malceski over the boundary line into a GC teammate. That kind of attitude and approach has been sorely lacking since I can even remember...

Footy is all chaos theory, the better teams know how to control the chaos, the worse a side is the less control they have of that chaos, in saying that we beat a better side then the giants, hopefully that means we are in better form, i believe that we are due to win two in a row the same reason i believe that we would win round 1.

Howe has elite foot skills. There I said it.

Yes he does.

Salem-Howe vs Terlich-Grimes

This is why Roos is worth every penny

Despite being a big fan, I would probably have Lamumba in there ahead of Dunn... and I would not be in the least bit surprised if Nathan Jones makes AA this year (providing he has a another season like last year).

Guys, I don't wish to be picky but it's LUmumba not Lamumba. A lot are spelling his name wrong. No, I am not in a bad mood it's the schoolteacher coming out in me I guess.

Just a little thing but was good to see Jesse trying to take the boundary line shot in the last quarter from the out-on-the-full in our forward pocket (the one Watts slotted).

Jesse's eyes lit up and he was starting to set up when the umpire took it off him.

I just love the fact that he has no compunction about taking such a critical kick at an important time in what was his debut game. Great attitude and further evidence of his self-belief.

Also on Jesse-watch, how quickly did he get to his feet after splitting the pack in the last quarter - he was as nimble and quick as Newton, who then teamed up with JKH for his second goal.

That 'on to the feet' recovery was great to see. Reminded me of the late great Donny Williams. Newton got up onto his feet pretty well too. Gee, am I dreaming but how could ALL our new players be so good on Saturday. I was most impressed with them all. Love Garlett's speed and chasing ability. As some have said a reincarnation of The Flash' Davey. May it all continue throughout the season.

Because most of our older players were carp who got well paid for under performing for years.

I believe that there is a lot of Psychological scarring in the players make up and that has been difficult to counter.

We are now on the right track and surprise surprise the new players haven't been melbournised and hopefully the balance old to new will help more to recover

Had to be 1 from each coach. 5 4 3 2 1 voting system

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
