FAREWELL JEREMY HOWE

What

Recommended Posts

I think Howe is a natural footballer with a huge upside. In my opinion we must look at keeping him and only lose him if we are able to get a good pick from GWS (and or someone else) and on trade that pick for another player.. lets say we get pick 10 for Howe, we trade pick 10 to Geelong for Stephen Motlop or Gold Coast for Dion Prestia or bundle it up in an audacious bid to lure a Hannebery.

Otherwise, he stays.

No we won't - GWS they'll need it for one of their academy players. I'm not sure their offer wasn't just a spoiler for our sniffing around.

Theoretically GWS could trade out their first pick and still draft the academy players with their leftover picks.

It’s just that the points loading differences would see picks relegated (or even wiped out) in future drafts.

I think they believe they can retain their best kids and get both Hopper and Kennedy by trading a few second tier kids who want to go home.

They’ll be happy enough to get a few second round picks, as the extra pick values will insulate them from losing too many cumulative points in the bidding process.

Agreed D3. I think his currency will go up even further, when our midfield improves, as it undoubtedly will, given the maturing of Viney, Brayshaw and Petracca coming back, along with some more shrewd trading/drafting - hopefully. I think with better movement through the corridor, we will see more of Howe's skill set than we already have.

Tomlinson?

Think Tomlinson would be an excellent get. Can play back or forward and would be a great complement to Hogan in the forward line.

He has seemed pretty settled up there though, and sure GWS would need some convincing to let him go.

Wouldn't be surprised if Brisbane look to get in on Jeremy Howe too.

I think instead of taking the pick and running, it would look far less suspicious if we took the pick and just strolled away casually.

Haha, brilliant. :D

Just scanning the list quickly, as far as the 23 and unders (who should form the core of our next finals push) we currently have roughly 15 or so in that bracket.

We’re probably a draft away from really having that core in place, as long as we retain and develop what we already have. I haven’t counted Harmes, King and White in that lot, because they’re a relatively unknown quantity.

If they do come on, the list will look in pretty good shape going forward.

Howe’s a talented player, and I’m happy for him to stay, but at 24 (25 next month, same age as Jordie Mac) he sits just outside that core. If Jeremy contributed more by way of leadership or team oriented intangibles that contribute to the development of a young group, I’d probably be more upset at the prospect of him leaving.

Surely we'd jump at an offer of Howe for Tommlinson? personally i rate him very highly, extremely good work rate and would compliment Jesse really well

We must keep Howe unless we get an over the top offer. He brings people to the game. He is a good footballer who has never been dropped and he is young.

thats true my daughter loves him if we lose him, she's probably out also

SOOOO??????

Howe is attractive to other clubs as a marketing device due to his high flying?

MFC has so many marketing features that we can afford to let him go and increase an opponents position????

MFC needs consistent hard-nosed players with a win at all costs attitude, no more "marketing opportunities". How have his marketing features helped us in the last 4 years?

The people who don't want to trade Howe are probably the same who ridiculed those who wanted to trade Jamar (and others) when his value was at its peak.

He has something, that's why he's a good trade option. You won't get anything for Bail or McKenzie but Howe might get us a decent player in return that will add more value to the team than he does currently.

I did say more than the quoted part including that we establish his worth and offer him that. I did not say or release him for that but do agree. However I said his worth will be diminished if he doesnt improve and we will not undertake to develop/improve him if he does not accept the offer. I dont think his value is at its peak and if some other club does want to pay more than we think then yes they can have him and they can develop him.

Aside from his marking ability Howe has not shown anything that would see him rated as a top 20 pick or a player of significant spend. Anyone that thinks he is, is looking at his highlight reel and not his output. He is not a key position, not a midfielder, he has been hit and miss both forward and back. His work rate I would think is close to worst in our current starting side as are the defensive aspects of his game. I don't think a lot of this is development, I just think marking ability and natural leap aside he is limited. Other clubs will see his marketability (as all on here do for us), they will also see the potential (as some on here do) and that is why he has more worth than most and why some clubs (Giants, Lions, Suns) will pay significant overs for him. I love witnessing his highlights but if we want to improve our list as a whole he is the expendable player with the best market value.

Essentially, he's lazy and only shows up every 4 or 5 games. Other teams can carry that, we can't. Top 10 pick and we'd be laughing.

He is a swing man which we need.....He was in our leading group of rebound 50's last year and can play forward and kick goals

Somehow taking "species" is now bad??? I have stated his stats on this thread before, he is the right age and played the right amount of games to fit our side going forward. I would not trade him for a top 10 pick in this years draft which is described as very shallow.

At least he shows a bit of flair and I enjoy his great marks. He is not a world beater but he is still a solid player who can improve.

Just my opinion.

Agreed, Howe at his best is a great player. The problem is his attitude. He's not playing like he cares, he's not dragging anyone along with him. He's not putting pressure on the opposition. He's dropping his head and it's eerily reminiscent of what we put up with Frawley last year. Someone whose brain is already out the door and is just playing out the year without a vested interest in moving the club forward.

You can't do anything with players like that except drop them or get rid of them for best available currency.

Just wondering if we read to much into "attitude" because he is up for a contract renewal....Same as Frawley last year.

Possibly. Just find his body language on-field quite poor and having gone through the entire Frawley melodrama last year it's hard not to draw parallels.

    GAMEDAY: Rd 13 vs Collingwood

It's Game Day and the Demons are once again faced with a classic 8 point game against a traditional rival on King's Birthday at the MCG. A famous victory will see them reclaim a place in the Top 8 whereas a loss will be another blow for their finals credentials.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie
