- agree Harley Balic is a very talented young player

- Parish should be #1 pick

- Joshua Schache will go top 5. Super talented key forward. Blues will be very keen.

- Aaron Francis will be 1st round choice 13-17 likely

- Sam Weideman would be a great pickup to spite the black & white mob

But they won't pass. They will get mills for their first pick (say 14-18ish) and will get Dunkley for pick 30+ ish. So really not worth the discussion because boh will be huge wins for them. If mills wasn't there it might be different (having to use first pick on him etc)!

It should be talked about. It's an absolute disgrace that the Swans and Brisbane can get the best of both worlds, it's the greatest rort right up there with COLA. I'm sick of the Swans getting handed everything we should have Heeney if Collingwood were in our position Eddie would never shut up about it, but because it's us no one cares. We must stop this rort now.

I would almost go at a happy medium and just give the Academy kids to the Suns and Giants as they have no F\S picks but we must stop the Swans and Lions getting hand outs when they are eligible for F\S picks.

is Parish any relation to Les? anyone know?

WTF? That has North with pick 1, Geelong with 2 and us with 15.....

don't worry about the teams numbered picks, just the players order at this stage of the season.

I am firmly of the view that we trade our draft picks for established players for a few years and really develop a good footy team with good development culture

We are no good at picking 18 year olds no matter what the draft pick number

With Petracca to come in next year we seem to have sufficient midfielder/forwards. Set with Kent, JKH, Garlett...

If we were recruiting for need what type of players are we likely to be looking for..?

TRADE a draft pick for an established young ruckman

That was then, this is now. Salem, Brayshaw and Hogan (and hopefully Petracca) all say hello.

I think a mixture of trading and drafting. If we can get a player in the 20-23 age bracket who is already an established good player like shiel or coniglio then we should trade. But we can always use our 2nd or 3rd rounder and we seem to do well with these picks.

Well we are heading into Round 7 and no one is seriously discussing the draft yet, perhaps tangible proof that 2015 has shown immense improvement for our developing side. Nevertheless, with the NAB U18 Champs around the corner, the AFL website has compiled a list of the top 20 prospects at this early stage in the season in what is rated as a "shallow" draft.

The 20 to watch who are this year's most exciting draft draft prospects

From my well researched and considered opinion*, I like the sound of the following players (academy players excluded).

* My opinion consists of reading the small blurb in this article and thinking to myself "yeah, he sounds like he can play"

Darcy Tucker

184cm/78kg

23/1/97

Midfielder/half-back

Vic Country/North Ballarat Rebels

After a stellar championships last year as a rebounding half-back which saw him named an All Australian as a bottom ager, Tucker has moved up the ground this year into the midfield. With great speed, agility and smarts, Tucker can influence a game many ways. The controlled North Ballarat captain recently gathered 43 disposals in a TAC Cup game. He loves to run with the ball, zigzag through traffic and swing onto his left foot.

Darcy Parish

181cm/75kg

25/7/97

Midfielder

Vic Country/Geelong Falcons

Parish is a go-getting midfielder who makes things happen. With run, carry and very neat skills, Parish is quick to keep the ball moving forward and takes his team with him. He belies his smaller size to throw himself into contests and hunts the ball with ferocity. Parish started the year in brilliant form, being close to best afield in the first few games he played. Thumb surgery will sideline him for the opening part of the championships but he'll have plenty of time to tuck the ball under his arm and dash off.

Sam Weideman

196cm/91kg

26/6/97

Key forward

Vic Metro/Eastern Ranges

Weideman is a tall, imposing and efficient key forward who shapes as a very early pick this year. The grandson of Collingwood legend Murray Weideman and son of former Magpie Mark, the 17-year-old starred on the MCG last month for the NAB AFL Academy. Weideman is prepared to fly at the ball and into packs, he can kick on both feet, and has the natural smarts of a goalkicker. A reliable shot for goal, Weideman booted five last week for the Eastern Ranges.

Jacob Weitering

195cm/94kg

23/11/97

Key defender

Vic Country/Dandenong Stingrays

A powerful, smart key defender who can set up the game from centre-half back. Weitering is strong overhead and a penetrating long kick, and already has the frame to outmuscle and outmanoeuvre opponents with ease. The 17-year-old has played up the ground as a forward and even as a wingman, but is best placed in defence with his sure hands and mature frame. The leading contender for this year's No.1 pick.

Weideman or Schache will be up there for our first pick if we decide to go tall (we have enough KPD's surely).

KPF's, Rucks and Mids Mids Mids is what we need

we only have one real kpd

Most of the talented 20 that I would like at Melbourne are already attached to other clubs via academies or father son.

I quite liked the sound of Rhys Mathieson, anyone seen him play?

Hopefully we aren't picking up any of these players in the top 10 because we've traded our first pick for Shiel!!

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
