Grimes steps down as co-captain

Featured Replies

step up? has been the only one doing so for years now.

I completely disagree. Most of the players on our list have busted a gut during their time on the list, including Grimes, and I reckon it's insulting to suggest otherwise. It just so happens that Jones is also our best player, so it has borne more fruit.

I reject the commonly held notion around here that Jones is the only one who tries. (Not your words exactly TSKFA, but it appears to be the sentiment.)

i agree, but i more directing what i said to DD. Not sure what else Jonesy has to do to "step up". Has been the spiritual captain even since he was actually given the role. Should lead us for the next 3+ years in that role i feel.

Wasn't a dig at Jonesy at all more so the fact im excited he will deservedly be made sole captain.

We all knew he should have been made captain after Greeny.

I don't think there is a spot for him in the backline this year. He needs to make it as a midfielder and he will.

I thought he looked a more natural midfielder. He is excellent at the cut off intercept mark at half back but there seems less of that now with the modern game than when he started.

Surely he would be a valuable hard run with tagger type. I wanna see him in the middle getting clearances where disposal efficiency is a little less important, but being tough and hard is.

Why will he? Being very average speed and having a light frame won't cut it.

Would love to see him wear the number 16 again

The appointment of Grimes & Trengove as co captains was a ludicrous decision made by desperate people.

Glad it's now officially history.

Jack now has to concentrate on making the senior 22

Me too.

I know it not a big deal but I would like him to get away from that stupid no. 31 decision that he looked very uncomfortable with at the time.

I believe it is best for both parties, but I want to also believe that Jack saw the need for him to do this and didn't take much convincing.

I think the captain and the LG should be chosen at the beginning of every season. I don't like inheriting it because at some point you are going to be pilloried for not giving it up or for it not taken from you.

I think they have short circuited that.

187cm 82kg, not a bad size.

And then Dean Kent can have his third jumper number in as many seasons.

At least he can't claim it, been wearing it since I came to the club.

Give Grimes any number but 31 and don't give 31 to any of the new kids. It seems to go with Norms curse...

Did he jump or was he pushed?

Almost certainly the latter - don't think its in his DNA to shy away from leadership challenges. Either way I think its in the best interests of both Jack and the club.

Hope he has a bumper season !!

There is no doubt in my mind that this was "engineered" by the club. Jones is getting just recognition for his efforts over the past three years with the club showing its faith in his ability to lead on his own; and I'm sure that equally the club is expecting a show of faith in return, by which Jones re-signs on an extended contract. Additionally, a solo captaincy would probably make it far easier for the club to justify a large salary increase.

Let's not rewrite history. 13th and 14th place in our last two Blueys.. not all that great in our rabble and as one of the more mature players

the moment in my signature was a pearler though!

That says a lot about his contribution as a player C and B.

I have every confidence the guy has given his best since arriving at the MFC particularly the last two years.

Unfortunately as a player I think is just short of being a good player.

IMO average at best, he has a large problem and that is disposal.

I hope I am wrong because he gives 100% every game but I don't see him in the team in the medium term.

Right decision. He's a quality person and I hope he gets back to his best footy in 2015.

He is not a great kick, but perhaps the scars of seasons past and the pressure of captaincy have taken their toll. It looks to me that he hasn't been enjoying his footy.

A couple of wins, a positive atmosphere and a few keen young blokes around him might see him having fun out there again.

I remember when he first started and he was a great rebounding half back. his natural instict was to mark ball and naturally roll around and go straight away.. thats what he was good at.. maybe with a forward line he may be able to do that more?

We are now free to pick the 22 each week on merit,

Disappointed to say it but I think you hit the nail on the head.

With the influx of talent and more development, places in the side will be harder to get. This to me is a Coach's decision.

It does allow Jack to concentrate on his own game, something he will need to do.

He has courage and talent and just needs to improve his disposal.

Was touted as a future captain from the day he was drafted - unfortunately, he was lumped with the responsibility too early. Focus on his football. The captaincy is a huge burden, and that is manifested ten-fold if you're down on form.

All the best Grimey.

gosh even more important we re-sign Jones. just imagine the worst and he goes. We dont really have a lot of people ready to step up. but i cant see it happening.

Good for you Jack! Probably the most selfless player at the club, along with his former co-captain.

Now he can stop worrying about others and concentrate on his own game.

Jack has a lot of experience at moving sideways but this one is positive .

Here's hoping focusing on footy yields great results for him.

leave it at this.We respect him and we respect his action

Can't fault attitude, application and a personality built for leadership. But ultimately the only leadership I want to see at MFC is based on performance on field. It's been too long. Unfortunately he never earnt the right to be Captain on the basis of his onfield performance. I think it's fair to say that if he doesn't fix his turnovers he won't survive. I really hope he can because in all other respects he shows great potential but he is killing the team the way he is playing at the moment. I pray that we are building a list that won't make us suffer through that type of football anymore. It's killing my interest in watching the team.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
