I talk to his dad all the time at the football and there is no chance Nathan will leave the club.

Chip's old man said words to the same effect to me as we dined under the stars at Uluru a few nights after the Port game this year.

You had to look up the meaning of panic in the dictionary? Was that before finger painting and story telling time, or after?

Very humerous Chicken Little.

Maybe Chip wanted to stay but the club thought pick 3 was more valuable...

Major difference with Jones is that he (or his manager) hasn't come out and said their putting off contract negotiations to the end of the year. That leads me to believe that he has a strong preference to stay but is also looking for a fair contract given everything he's contributed to the club.

The opposite in fact. All the evidence we have says that Jones wants to sign ad the club is quibbling over the length of the deal. If this is true then they should be ashamed of themselves. Give him whatever length he wants to keep him at the club.

Yeah, I think Jones has proven his character well enough that the club could just about give him a career-long deal from this point.

5 years on good money, then a scheduled renegotiation at 31yrs old, with a guaranteed minimum salary and guaranteed performance rewards set out now to provide certainty.

After that, as far as I'm concerned Jones can decide his own retirement time and keep getting senior games for as long as he can maintain the standard. No early retirements, no missing games to give opportunities to kids.

The Melbourne football club needs to restore confidence that the fans can look to our top players without any hesitation or anxiety.

that's funny. i haven't seen any evidence yet

seems neither side is leaking for a change

seems we have to wait a little longer before panicking

First time I've opened this thread.

Does anyone know if Nathan Jones has signed a new contract yet, and if not, is he thinking leaving via free agency?

I think if he doesn't sign by round 1 he is gone for sure, but it'll be ok because he'll be the worst player in our 22.

Thanks in advance guys.

succinct and accurate !

You two are ridiculous.

Some of us can decipher quite easily between personalities but quite clearly, you two can't.

Jones and Frawley are worlds apart in regards to leadership and Jones won't be going anywhere no matter his contractual status.

There's a reason not nearly as many supporters are concerned with the fact that Jones hasn't signed a contract.

Can you figure it out Lloyd and Harry?

Good one though...

Who even mentioned Frawley ?

And won't be going anywhere no matter his contractual status ? Really ? Two contracts ago he was closing to walking out to essendon because we low balled him. the negotiations were prolonged and we forked out more in the end it keep.

please don't call me ridiculous and then follow it up with that sort of wisdom.

Machsy's post was was clearly a sarcastic dig at those who were unhappy with how Frawley handled the whole thing this year. Are you awake today?

The both of you seem to miss a very important ingredient in this whole FA versus club loyalty debate. The character of the player.

You can bang on all you like about Jones 'nearly leaving' all those years ago. But he didn't leave and the bloke has genuine care for this footy club as well as an instinctive drive to bring the best out of himself and others. Something that can't be said about Frawley. Jones is a leader of men. Something the MFC will be willing to pay be bucks for. We won't be seeing a repeat of what happened with Frawley this year.

Jones' character alone and presence at the club means he's an untouchable. It's worth more than half his contract alone, regardless of his incredible on-field display.

This argument is over. Frawley needed to go. And you'll be glad he did in 2-3 years time.

Jones will sign. There's nothing more to it.

We are violent agreement about Jones and his value to the club. I think you have missed the point is that are already some here who are downplaying the importance of jones to our club? some questioning his leadership qualities. the dig is at them not a comparison with Frawley .

my only caution is I would not be quite as blaise to suggest that he will sign and there is nothing more. I have more confidence than I have ever had of a successful negotiation because we have smart operators at the helm. But we would not want to be acres away from outside offers and what we offer but I don't believe that will be the case.

Edit...I will let machsy speak for himself but I am awake and I interpreted his post to be picking holes at posters who are already going into the self defense mode of " he is gone and he ain't that good anyway".

maybe the reaction to Frawley is being compared and you can draw the distinctions but the bottom line is that the minute a player refuses to re-sign according to the Demonland timetable he is gone, he is not that good et ctc.

Frawley, hogan, watts and some posters have started to diminish jones.

If he was Nathan Fyfe, Gary Ablett or even Selwood I would agree with most of you but he ain't, Jones is our best in a bottom side, hopefully Dom Tyson knocks him off for the B&F in 2015 and that may show us we are on the way up the ladder.. Poor recruiting over the 6 years prior to Roos arrival has kept Jones at the top, we now have the Roos led recruiting with Petracca, Brayshaw and Stretch etc on the way...they will need contracts and don't forget Jesse Hogan, that will require attention...

Nathan Jones is not a top 20 player so ideally 4th best at the Dees and a contract to suit would be ideal...

well looking at the total afl talent pool is one valid way to look at it atj

but remember that all clubs have the same salary cap and must spend at least 95%

on this basis lower clubs with no (or few) top 20 players are effectively forced to pay overs to their own "stars"

in this basis jones probably gets a top 20 (or 25 or whatever) salary package. that's reality

I will be surprised and disappointed if Jones is not signed before Christmas.

I'd get the signature as soon as I could! But I also feel like it would be counter productive to announce it now when the AFL year is really in off season mode.

May as well pick a time that's going to sell some memberships!

I'll be surprised if it's not signed by the preseason games and if not then by round 1.

All I can say D'Ox is that my mate says that everything is positive and progressing well between MFC and Nate. If not before Xmas more than likely in the New year, but tells me we have nothing to worry about! Merry Xmas

Well for someone to get 27.73 disposals (average), 137 clearances & 255 contested possessions in a bottom side where he has been doing most of the work unaided, to dismiss him like that is unbelievable. Compares rather favourably to Dangerfield's 24.91 disposals (average), 136 clearances & 341 contested possessions don't you think?

I never cease to be amazed at the lengths people will go to dismiss a player once the MFCSS kicks in and thoughts turn to free agency. Seriously! The MFC should be doing everything in their power to secure his signature... he is the heart and soul of the club and that is something it just isn't possible to put a price on.

I thought his game went to a new level under Roos/Stone. His kicking improved I think largely to thinking situations through rather than trying to barge his way through. At 26 still has some quality years ahead of him.

It's apparently just a business now. Loyalty means nothing anymore.

At least, that's what I hear from some here.

He's going to the highest bidder. Possibly GWS. Or North Melbourne.

Highest bidder......Nth Melbourne??.....Brad Scott....."it would be irresponsible to match the Pies offer for Levi...

I think he'll stay but if he does go would be surprised if it was to North, edit: nothing should surprise us anymore.

IF he does leave. My money is on Hawthorn. I wouldn't begrudge him though.

What point are you trying to make again?

Posted

Simple - there's a lot of cliched carp stated on these threads.

Jones will remain a Demon. For life.

Why? Because he wants to. And the club wants him to.

He's loyal and committed to the club and he knows that, as a leader, he can influence the club's transformation and its future success.

And he wants to be a part of that.

There's more to footy for some players than simply the $$$. Some of you seem not to get that.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
