โ€œIโ€™ve been really fortunate to be at two great clubs โ€“ Hawthorn and Sydney โ€“ but Iโ€™ve just enjoyed the football environment. As much as Iโ€™ve enjoyed it at Sydney and Hawthorn, Iโ€™ve enjoyed it at Melbourne just as much, because itโ€™s the people that you meet along the way and you make great friendships.โ€

Shame, who comes in or does Goodwin fill that role?

Yeah just saw this on the MFC website. Really disappointed to read it. Stone is a marvellous coach and has obviously had a superb career. I wish he was able to stick around longer to help our young guys develop further as he is a real asset.

Congratulations to him on a brilliant career.

Goodwin will most likely help fill his role you would assume, or they may look to make another hire over the off-season or next year.

Thanks, George for your contributions to the MFC.

The players spoke very highly of him so I'm sure what he's imparted in the short time at the club will have a lasting effect.

I'd be looking at Brendan McCarthy as a replacement. Great development coach.

Goodwin will be the midfield coach I think.

Yep, would be an excellent replacement.

By the sounds of things McCarthy is cut from the same cloth as Stone.

Cooney and Griffen undermined McCarthy - and both have since shown their true form.

Little bit disappointed by this news, was hoping to have him around longer. Greatly appreciative for what he has done for our club.

Bugger :(

Oh no. has this anything to do with this trade period??? and with Roosies tenure? Or is the Goodwin ideas different than the tried & true methods?

why now all of a sudden?

Dam.

Thanks George for your work

Does this get Roosy back from holidays?

Lot of vacant coaching jobs right now...

why now all of a sudden?

maybe it is only all of a sudden to us, not to the club.

I was actually thinking the same thing when McCarthy was let go, I thought Stone may go on a bit longer and another club would grab him.

Would be a good pick up in tat position

Who is this McCarthy?

GS is retirement age, so just a natural transition.

I thought the same thing Webber but what confuses me is why he was so adamant in pressing Sydney to release him from his contract so he could move home and no longer have to commute only to pack it in for one year? I never expected him to become a life member at the club due to his age but one year is a bit short. Why not just retire last year and move home?

What happened in between that made this a one year deal? Or am I being too cynical?

I had a gut feel that this was going to happen, I actually made a comment about it a few months ago in one of the threads about the senior assistant roles, in that I thought that he might retire once the new assistant came along. I suspect that Roos and Stone had planned this as part of the succession plan when they came on board last year. Whilst its disappointing to see Stone leaving, it's fantastic that our players got to have even just one season with him. His knowledge of the game and what it takes both through his work at the Swans and Hawks will have been invaluable. We all know Roos rated him very highly, and the club would have been well aware of Stone's intentions.

I don't know whether we will bring another assistant on, or whether Goodwin will assume the role this year, and they might look at the requirements next year as Goodwin starts to take on a more senior role.

Goodwin will certainly have to start building his team, McCartney from the outside looks a good option and at least Goodwin would know from working with him at the Bombers but as you say next year is probably when something will happen.

Are you serious?? The guy that lost the players? THat same BMcC??

Why don't you opt for getting Mark Neeld?? Bizarre

Well surely we were always going to have one assistant move on to make room for Goodwin. The last thing we need is for a million assistant coaches to be standing around scratching their balls. My only question is why we bothered getting a bloke in who wasn't there for the long haul.

Too cynical. I know for a fact that coming back to Melb city was the prime mover last year, and PR talked him into going around for another year. Also that his co-dweller wasn't sure that they wanted him around the house full time. ;)

Some people are very quick to condemn someone who has had a long and distinguished career in player development on the basis of a personality clash with 2 oddballs like Griffen and Cooney and a spooked administration. If you look at the development of the Dogs younger players there is a lot to like.

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, weโ€™ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.
