I agree for all the gnashing of teeth over who we could have picked in the top ten often there is someone in the lower order that ends up an A grader or B+.

I'd like us to use 40 because I suspect this is where Roos comes into his own in picking someone who will develop over time, JHK, Howe and McDonald are great examples of this.

Perhaps its that players at this level work that little bit harder and have more to prove.

I also look forward to the "who?" reaction it draws.

That said we should take no further risks with Trenners who i think will come back and be better thatn before

Roos’ record in developing late draft picks is overrated. He is a master of getting the best out of players but he doesn't necessarily develop depth or turn draft picks into good players.

Some pretty handy players with late picks I would have thought. You are not going to get a great success rate in this part of the draft but I would be happy to pick up this calibre of player.

I think Evans is already a bust so I would like the opportunity of picking up a Malceski, Grundy, Jack or Smith.

Excellent analysis! Confirms Roos views that the draft is a lottery. Trading players in gives Roos a chance to see how they stack up after a few years in the AFL. This is what gives me confidence in his trades-in: Vince, Tyson, Riley, Mitchie, Lumuba, Garlett, Frost, Newton.

They made a prelim in 2003 and traded picks for guys like Davis and Jolly who were best 22.

A lot of those picks were picks that were needed for the sake of it. Ideally you want them to make it but really you've got your best 25 players. Some of the early ones became premiership players. Then less of the latter ones did because they had a full team so no need to throw kids in for development.

If we take a good kid with pick 40 then just like Evans and JKH have of late that kid will be given ample opportunity to earn a spot.

Once Sydney took a down turn again the likes of Parker and Hannebery were chucked in the team and became guns. Obviously they were good picks but opportunity to play is also vital.

The other thing against Sydney is that in those early 2000's they were in the Canberra comp were they not? I'm sure they stepped up their development 10 fold since then and they also moved in to the NEAFL where they get some much better opponents.

I suggested that "rookie" is a misnomer and should be replaced with "secondary".

In any event, I'm sure that in the end we will either do as above or delist a player like Evans and in any case it will be done in a professional

Given that in this hypothetical situation the club had already backflipped once, I wouldn't trust them not to do it again.

I agree 'Nasher', Jetta has earn't his place back on the senior list. We will have to look at another option to use pick 40.

We have signed Jetta, but does that mean a guaranteed upgrade? If JT is on the LTI, he can play up anyway, and we get an extra draft pick. That would be my strategy. We can upgrade as we go, to suit needs.
