Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

As much I would love to have a gun like him.... It want happen....

How many other good players good we get with picks 2 & 3?

I still believe we need to invest in young talent, hawthorn bit the bullet & traded away experience to get kids...

We need to have a long term plan....giving away the farm is dangerous....I'm starving for success ... Born in 64 & yet to see a flg... Rather wait for another 4-5yrs & build a premiership club!

Good clubs continue to build their lists... No short cuts..

I think we have had enough picks in the top 5 to realise how hard it actually is to get it right.

I would prefer to trade them for 1 superstar who we know can play instead of 2 kids who will most probably knowing our development over the past decade will end up getting delisted in 5 years.

Dangerfield or:

McLean and Sylvia?

Scully and Trengove?

Or maybe we'd get lucky with 2 and 3 and get Watts and Natanui?

I am quite comfortable trading 2 and 3 for Dangerfield. He is worth it. And until we get good quality senior players on our list, the younger kids will continue to struggle.

exactly

there are 1 or 2 players at best in every draft that end up being true top shelf and dangerfield is one of them

the odds of either of this year's pick 2 or 3 being that player aren't good

Anyone else find it telling Danger hasn't come out and said a word so far about our statement, nor Adelaide's?

What exactly would he be waiting for if he was so intent on staying put? Who their new coach is?

Maybe he knows what he wants and just doesn't care what the public perception is. Everyone is trying to make mountains out of molehills, Danger is probably sitting back laughing, i know i would be.

If its actually on, they'd be wise to wait for

  1. Frawley to announce he's leaving - DONE
  2. Frawley to strike his big deal - NEXT (Probably first thing Monday)
  3. AFL to announce pick 3 compo - BEEN ALIGNED WITH AFL ALREADY (probably Tuesday)
  4. Package presented to AFC - of pick 3 and ??? (already underway)
  5. Dangerfield announce he will come. (will announce on Wednesday)

[censored] Danger.

I wish the AFL had the trust that we could this time around build a dynasty on our own. Trust that we have the right recruiters, development coaches and players to provide the perfect environment for young players to thrive. Of course I completely get that we've had ample opportunity in previous drafts/years and we've got it so horribly wrong. But I don't care to wait now. I don't want to offer the world for a bonafide star of the comp who was brought to life by another club.

I want us to do it ourselves for once.

I want us to be ruthless in our objective to draft the best two mids of this year in Petracca and Brayshaw, (insert any other player out recruiters believe have star qualities) And inject maybe a ROK, Malceski and Lumumba to add to Cross, Vince and Dawes who were not stars of the comp but who tick the box as teachers and players who will actually nurture and mentor young players unlike Sylvia, Moloney and Frawley in recent times.

I understand there's an argument that the MFC can't be afforded anymore time to 'rebuild' and need immediate improvement. But there is risk in everything. Every trade. Look at what has happened to Clarke.

It's only my view. But I see us as being extremely lucky to have another opportunity and crack at potentially nabbing two of the best mids in this draft and developing them RIGHT. I don't want to hear one post bring up our past failings because the variables involved are now completely different.

It's time to unearth our own stars of the competition.

Petracca

Brayshaw

Viney

Tyson

Salem

Hogan

Under the tutelage of potentially:

Cross

Jones

ROK

Malceski

Vince

Dawes

Lumumba

Vs

Scully

Trengove

Morton

Gysberts

Blease

Strauss

(Who were drafted by a completely different recruiting group headed by possibly the worst recruiter of all time)

Under the tutelage of:

Green

Moloney

Sylvia

Frawley

Jones

Etc

We have been given a golden second opportunity to have a shot at getting it right.

My thoughts anyway..

I dont disagree or agree with this post it just a long one to quote so we can get to the 100

Roughead and Griffen

Ball and Judd

etc

I take your point but I firstly would not assume that the picks would be used on kids, and secondly would not doom to failure any kid who walks in the door. The club is addressing the senior void and is in the process of creating an environment where the procession of failed development ends.

Picks 2 & 3 for one player is a massive amount to give up. It well surpasses what Carlton gave up for Judd. Those sort of credits don't roll around very often and if the club begins its rise up the ladder next season, they are crucial in helping to establish a successful team.

I'd be a lot warier than you seem to be. Putting all your chips on one player, no matter who it is, is a gamble.

Good clubs continue to build their lists... No short cuts..

The Hawks made a call to go down a youth path, but that must be close to 10 years ago, They bottomed out for two to three years tops.

This latest premiership side has 7-8 players from other clubs, Gunston, Burgoyne, McEvoy, Hale, Lake, Spangher, Gibson (Think there might have been one more) But to say you want to develop a list on our own, I think we can pretty safely say has been a failure for the MFC in recent years.

Look at the Swans.... their 2012 team had a bunch of 'imports' from other clubs. It's a furphy to think that you can make it on your own without bringing in other kids.

Good clubs are successful and settled off the the field, have a strong core of players and values, and then they bring in other players as required to fill gaps. The top 4-6 clubs are more interested in poaching players via free agency from other clubs than worrying about top 10 draft picks.

This is the way of the AFL with free agency.

How many people said that Geelong are going to slide now in 2015? Put Clark and possibly Frawley in and suddenly they look better. Port are going to land Ryder, and possibly Gorringe from GCS, Hawks are looking like they are first choice for Frawley and O'Rouke.... Even North are getting into this with trying to get Waite, Higgins and securing Dal Santo last year.

Free agency and player trades are more crucial to winning a flag than ever before, and GCS and GWS, and to a lesser degree, Dogs, Saints and ourselves, can't kid ourselves that the draft alone will enable the club to rise up the ladder.

I agree that the two picks could be great and I'm the first to admit I have no idea if this day is like 2001 or 2003.

I'm not sure if drafting science and scouting is good enough for us to predict truly which it will be either.

But in the balance, the chance of scoring big with both players is unlikely. The chance of a journeymen solid player with one and a bust with the other is the most likely scenario imo.

And given our poor track record of developing players and our known deficiency of senior leaders, I feel like this is what our club needs. As part of the fresh start we need to rebuild the playing list which means we need to add pays like Dangerfield if we want to improve them.

I think we need immediate success. Not necessarily a premiership but strong improvement to give hope to the passing group and supporters. To give Hogan a reason to stay. To give other players a reason to join us.

If the are two deals available like the Tyson deal, well maybe that is a better option. Get four players in, 2 immediate impact. But those deals have their own risks. Tyson exceeded expectations but this year's options may not; there is a reason such deals are cheaper than the PD deal.

At the end, I'd hope for something back from Adelaide along with PD. I think Adelaide may believe pick 10 may be overs. Maybe pick 29? Maybe Lyons? Maybe Lyons and pick 47?

Maybe the deal is:

2+3+46 for PD+29 or 10 ?

I'd personally rather Toumpas + 3 for Dangerfield, not that I want to move Toumpas, but I'd like to try and do another "Tyson deal" with pick 2.

At the end of the day, I hope Roos plans on bringing 4 experienced players to the MFC who will play round 1. Harry L, a KPD Roos event (i.e. Frost) and two mids. That means 20% change in our starting team. If one of those mids is Dangerfield we will be a very different team on the park.

I think all agree there is incentive for both sides to deal.

This only gets done if both sides operate in good faith. We know Roos/PJ will, it's there style. AFC, not so sure.

A demand of 2,3,Toumpas is simply ridiculous if it's just Dangerfield coming our way. The assets are too significant that if the two sides have very different valuations you just walk away from the table.

anyone have a read for how Adelaide generally operate?

Pragmatic in recent years.

Took unders for Gunston, facilitated trade for Maric without much fuss, and couldn't get Vince out the door fast enough when pick 23 was on the table.

Stood their ground over Tippett, that didn't end well for them.

Would love Danger but IMO Pick 2 & 3 is overs, one of those picks and a player is okay (lets face it if he is leaving next year it is a better deal than they will get now and Pick 2 is a chane at Petracca for them)

I would also consider dealing with GWS Pick 2 and a player or Pick 2 & 3 + player for Pick 4 for a Shiel and Treloar. We need to build depth and whilst Danger is a gun I think we would get Treloar and Shiel for less money than Danger would command and with Pick 4 still think we would get Brayshaw.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
