Karmichael Hunt leaves AFL

Well done on what I'd call a pretty successful code switch. Israel Folau showed that it's not an easy thing.

Watching him sink Richmond was one of my favourite moments in footy in the last few years:

I think it's a good thing for our game to poach a Rugby player or two and hope to see it happen again in the future.

Surprised this isn't a thread saying we should go after karmichael considering there's s topic started on every other club reject/retiree

You're surprised a thread titled "Karmichael Hunt leaves AFL" isn't a thread about recruiting him?

Hrmmm.

Wasn't injured at all this year, that was just careful PR management as he (unsurprisingly) couldn't get a game above the Suns kids.

(From someone inside the club at GoldCoast)

I'd still call this experiment a ringing success.

Some 40 plus games, the media attention he brought to the club giving it a face in an NRL environment not to mention his leadership off the ground and his work to settle Bennell which can't be underestimated. Yep, I think you are right.

That's a bit unfair. How many years did he stick around? What was his impact off the field (see rjay's comment above)? Should we say Tadhg Kennelly was only in it for the money (once he got the glory, he returned to play Gaelic Football in Ireland)?

Folau was a failed experiment, yes... but Hunt at least showed he had some of the right skills and gave it a proper dip.lasting 4 years and at one stage was considered one of the GC's better mids. And even if he was in it for the money, so what?? The AFL is a professional sport and club loyalty is a thing of the past. It is now a game for elite sports people and that is exactly what Hunt is.

He ( KH ) was still playing Rugby whilst on the GC payroll ffs.. Had some skills to play AFL but he was here for the money...dont kid yourself otherwise. His heart is as a Rugger and thats what the kids will remember when considering a code possibly./.. yeah nah I'll stick with Rugby thanks ......fail !!

Kennelly gave his all to the game. Rising Star, premiership, on-off field leadership and mentoring

chalk and cheese....or probably Guinness and Flossies !!

Massive Fail.

AFL paid Hunt $800,000 per annum over 5 years for 40 pretty ordinary games, doubt if he pulled one extra loser through the gate, 4 million may have been better spent elsewhere, spectacular example of AFL incompetence.

Depends on what you think the money was being paid for.

As far as advertising for the AFL, Hunt was worth $20mil.

He was never recruited for his football prowess, yet still managed to win an AFL match off his own boot.

You could do a lot of things with 20 million that wouldnt result in someone saying.,.. AFL ...yeah nah...thanks for the dosh but Im out of here

The one thing this has usefully done is prove that AFL is a much more demanding game than the fat, slow, dumb rugby codes.

Anytime you get into a debate about which code is more elite, just drop a mention that some of the best players of the modern era in the rugby codes could barely strap a book on in the AFL.

Also, it establishes that Andrew Demetriou is an even worse recruiter than Barry Prendergast. Big call I know, but it is there to be made.

    FROZEN by Whispering Jack

Who would have thought?    Collingwood had a depleted side with several star players out injured, Max Gawn was in stellar form, Christian Petracca at the top of his game and Simon Goodwin was about to pull off a masterstroke in setting Alex Neal-Bullen onto him to do a fantastic job in subduing the Magpies' best player. Goody had his charges primed to respond robustly to the challenge of turning around their disappointing performance against Fremantle in Alice Springs. And if not that, t

    TURNAROUND by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons won their first game at home this year in the traditional King’s Birthday Weekend clash with Collingwood VFL on Sunday in a dramatic turnaround on recent form that breathed new life into the beleaguered club’s season. The Demons led from the start to record a 52-point victory. It was their highest score and biggest winning margin by far for the 2024 season. Under cloudy but calm conditions for Casey Fields, the home side, wearing the old Springvale guernsey as a mark of res

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an
