Damaging? How is it damaging? Its an opinion. Get over it. Unless this thread goes

Person 1: his good

Person 2: yes he is

Person 3: I think his good

Person 4: I also think his good

People feel they need to be high and mighty and make personal attack on someone who thinks otherwise.

The culture of this club of expecting first year players to be impacting regularly week after week is a significant factor in why we're stagnant on the bottom. That's how it's damaging.

You said he needs to do more. No, he doesn't. Grimes, Garland, Howe, Frawley, Jamar, Watts, they 'need' to do more. Salem is a first year player. They don't 'need' to do anything other than show a future, and that's exactly what Salem has done. He has shown an appetite for the contest, a willingness to work hard, and skill with ball in hand.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but you should be prepared to be called out on it, especially when it's as bad as this one.

Its not bad at all. We should expect more from every player on our list until we get off the bottom of the ladder.

I am sure people said the same thing about Blease Tapscott Strauss ect and that "let them develop in there own time" attitude has gotten [censored] all results.

You only need to watch the port game in Darwin to see what this kid will produce in the future. Anyone saying he is a waste of a pick is jumping at shadows. Has toughness and class that's orrery hard to find

lol... I don't actually think he is a wasted pick, i was being sarcastic.. Its just becoming tough for me to watch these boards continuously pick on our players... Its almost like people here don't even support us and want them to fail or something.... Its just plan dumb, to judge a player after a handful of matches... If your picking up players from the Draft, then your gonna get kids and kids take time... He is capable of contributing and playing a role, but he's best is years away... Same as Toumpas, Its only he's second season and i believe he is being unfairly judged... Both are years away from there best...

You're missing the point.

I don't think he's good yet. That isn't the argument. It's about whether as a first year player (FIRST year), he needs to do more, as you have stated. He plainly doesn't. He is learning the game at the level ffs. If you're going to judge players to that degree in their first year then you need to take your whack, the same as you've given Salem.

Gary Ablett Jr. wouldn't get more than 1-2 touches a quarter with the way we take the ball forward.

Plus your reasoning stinks - he has spent half of his games as the sub which impacts his disposal count in a rather large manner.

Why has he spent all that time as a sub by the way?

this is getting repetitive

think we know where posters stand

Yes.

One poster is cross legged in the corner muttering through a frown something about '2 for 2' and the rest of us are standing next to a brick wall with a bloodied forehead.

Have you stopped for a moment to consider why ?

Because he likes to play the man rather then the ball?

We have the worst drafting in history and people continue to make excuses. I remember years ago I said we should trade Watts and got the same reception. Grow up fellas and contribute to the thread rather then bitching about fellow posters opinions.

Then why do you have such an issue with us trading Pick 2 and 22 for Tyson and Pick 9?

We are cutting the failures in half.

Your points cut across each other and you don't see it, or you don't care - it's frustrating to say the least.

If you don't want posters dissing your opinions - get a blog and disable the comments.

OK - Ill play the ball - here is a link to the draft class of 2014 and how they have progressed - http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-08-06/the-big-step-up

The vast majority of these boys either haven't played a game or have played a handful - very few have been regulars.

Please tell me why you think that is - or should we have shot at 80% of the draft class of 2014 for lack of output ?

...back on the topic.

No preseason has been used as an excuse for many players and often lets them off the hook. In Salem's case it is more about the medical condition he had which must have taken a fair bit out of him so I'm happy to cut him a bit of slack this year.

Finding enough of the ball has been an issue with you and I can understand that. I think he hasn't got enough in the tank at the moment to get a lot of ball at AFL level and that's why he has often found himself as the sub. The downside or catch 22 of that is he doesn't get enough consistent game time to build match fitness.

I was concerned early about his ability to get the ball but when he started getting 30 plus in the VFL I realised this wasn't going to be an issue.

I think you might be jumping at shadows a bit here 'olisik' and that's very understandable given our recent history with drafting. In Salem's case I would see how he comes up next year before getting too concerned, there are legitimate reasons for him not showing us as much as some of his contemporaries.

Ill go one further - at times he looks lost and gets to where the ball just ain't but I temper that comment with the knowledge that he is a first year player and learning the craft.

That probably has more to do with the fact that our players can't put the ball where it should be put.

His first pass to Bail which resulted in a goal was sublime. More of that stuff and we may have ourselves another player with Travis Johnstone type skills.

but with a hell of a better attitude and work ethic

  • Christian Salem has had the misfortune of being drafted into one of the worst teams of the last 2 decades
  • He was seriously ill (losing almost 10 kgs) which severely impacted his preseason, his first AFL preseason mind you
  • He has been the sub in many of his games
  • When on the field he has usually played on a HHF or in a FP, in a team with very few inside 50 entries and a high turnover rate
  • He is already in the top 5 or so best kicks in the team
  • He is a competitor
  • He can win his own ball
  • He hates losing
Of all the players on our list, Christian gives me the greatest confidence of getting the best out of himself and improving the position of this club.

Our lack of success and diabolical drafting puts unfair expectations on young kids just starting to find their way. The kid has played 12 games, many of which as the sub. Lets focus our energy on some of the supposed leaders whose continual lack of output put more pressure on young players like Christian.

I had to watch the GWS game on TV, I saw Mumford run through Salem and knock him to the ground and out of the screen. I was surprised to see that straight after, Christian sprinting back into screen to the next contest and lay a strong tackle.

We have a player. A very good young player.

Couldn't agree more

Freeman has been injured the whole season. Scharenberg for most of it and now has done an ACL.

This board would be in meltdown had we picked those two....."dreadful recruiting" etc etc

Gary Ablett Jr. wouldn't get more than 1-2 touches a quarter with the way we take the ball forward.

Plus your reasoning stinks - he has spent half of his games as the sub which impacts his disposal count in a rather large manner.

Another ridiculous thread.

I've been extremely impressed with what I've seen thus far from this kid.

He's still only that too - a kid.

In my view, this is a pick we nailed. Along with Tyson, Vince and JKH. Finally.

I agree, time to lock or close this thread.

I'm getting sick of even seeing it.

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the
