I cannot see Roos giving up a first round pick or watering down a potential first round pick for him, if he wants to come to the Dees I am sure the two clubs will find a way to accommodate him. He has done well for the swans, time for the swans to do well by him.

So St. Kilda can take him?

Doubt he'd do that anyway. I'm sure we wouldn't be the only club interested, he'd just choose one of our rivals who didn't try to make him jump through hoops to get there.

Decide whether we want him, decide what price we will pay, and pay it. Trying to [censored] around with these things rarely produce good results.

How is that making him jump through hoops?

You would assume the club would do their due diligence before signing him, but this is his third year in row injury free. If we got him for the right price then I can't see any reason why a rational Melbourne fan would say no to his signing.

I agree, W, but why would he come? It doesn't appear logical. Would we offer him a three year deal? Even then, he might be able to get that at Sydney if he plays it year by year. They have a side that will play deep in the finals for the rest of his career span. Okay, so money can talk, but I don't think we'd be offering enough to make it worth his while. Close to no chance he'd entertain this, IMO.

Where did you hear this? Can't see him getting there.

I read this the other day. Either news.com or the age.

Has a family connection to Carlton. His dad played 10 games with them or something similar.

Had a quote from his dad saying he was happy in Sydney.

Wasn't much meat to the article. Mostly speculation.

His Dad played 3 years at Carlton and was involved with Blues/Bullants for more than 10 years after his playing career finished. Was a gun player at Sydney too his old man!

Mitchell is off to Carlton.

He's contracted so he doesn't leave via trade unless Sydney okay it, I reckon pick 4 is a fair bit better than anything the blues could/would offer for him, the fact that he and Malceski would provide salary cap relief for them would help them a lot,

Sydney don't want anything earlier than a late first round pick because they'll be burning it on their guaranteed Academy selection, a player which (if not for the draft concessions given to Sydney) would otherwise go around pick 5. They're getting away with murder on that one, not dissimilar to if we manage to land Stretch with a third rounder.

Thanks, mate. Yeah, I knew his Dad had played for Carlton, but I think we hold the aces in terms of what we can offer.

Malceski is a great player, there's no doubt about that but this would be a massive risk for us to take.

Left Field is right - he's too old to undergo further surgery if he blows his knee again, so if we were to consider picking him up I'd be hoping an extremely thorough medical examination would be on the cards, to ensure his knee hasn't begun to deteriorate again.[/quote

If we get some good games out of him before he 'blows his knee' then all is not lost. Presuming the selectors are astute in our selection of rookies, we may well compensate more than adequately as we did this year with Jetta.

My (somewhat limited) understanding of LARS is that it is regarded as a relatively short term quick fix, which is why it is usually reserved for "more senior" players and not say an under 25.

I also understand that knee ligaments, LARS or not, don't 'deteriorate' as such at least in a measurable way, but just go BANG when the time comes.

So we wouldn't want to spend the farm on him.

Posted by Jon Ralph on twitter:-

"Denham & Lace says..."

Only complete dribble oozes from this things orifice so it's pretty likely that this is wrong.

Why would he leave a team in the position the Swans are in...would you leave a team in premiership contention to come to a team at the bottom of the ladder???

If they trade for an early pick they wouldn't have to use it on an academy selection, it would just be their first regular pick surely, like with father-son.

So is trading a late pick for Malceski the only way around diluting a compensation pick? Do delisted free agents effect compensation picks?

There are a few options (ordered by likelihood) but all depend on him agreeing to come obviously;

1. FA acquisition - this will dilute our compensation should Frawley leave. Should he stay - this is the best option.

2. Trade a late pick - this is the option to go for if Frawley leaves. It will not affect the compensation.

3. PSD - If Malceski is willing and we think that others below won't take him - this will work but requires a longer wait.

4. DFA - If Malceski is delisted for some strange reason. Maybe he requests it. I cannot see it happening, but it will not affect the compensation for Frawley. FA and DFA are seperate yet parallel constructs in the AFL.

5. Nat Draft - this will not happen.

Better off judging him based on the season as a whole which he is seriously in considerations for all Australian rather than a couple of shanks

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
