All,

I was thinking about a day trip to Melbourne for the Queens Birthday. Issue I have is that the game is that the game starts at 3:20, and the last flight from Melbourne to Hobart is at 7:40. Staying overnight in Melbourne isn't an option.

I think it's too tight. Thoughts?

Posted

If your checked in and taking carry on only and willing to pay for a cab then you would be should make it by about 10 mins.

Its tight, depends whether you want to risk it.

Posted

Game will finish at 6:00pm

Might just make the airport , if you leave straight away.

MCG to airport is about 40 min on game day

Allow 20 min for traffic problems also

Yes, the tipping point for me is that I'm in deep shit if I get stuck in Melbourne as my wife has an exam first thing next morning so I'm required for parental duties. Otherwise I'd just stay with friends for the night and get a $40 flight the next morning.

Not to be this year, I guess.

I reckon you'd be right if you book a cab or VHA/B car to get you there? You might have the option of leaving early as well (hope not) but if you do stay to the end and have to hot foot it it'll have been worth it!

Posted

Why don't you just attend and leave early at 3/4 time when we have a comfortable 6 goal lead?

Game finishes at 6 bolt to Richmond station train to spencer st - get there by 6.30 cab from spencer st will be at airport 7.15. Public holiday traffic - only issue is getting away from the G. I'd do it (actually maybe not the missus would deadset kill me if I missed it)

As would mine. If the consequence of it going pear shaped were any less than a slow, painful death, I'd give it a crack. Unfortunately though...

Just had an out of interest look at the Tuesday morning flights leave at 6.30am yep awesome - arrive at Hobart 11.20.... WTF! where the hell can you stop between Tulla and Hobart - King Island perhaps and hitch a ride on the Abel Tasman for the second half of the trip!

No get out of jail option for you Nasher - I reckon the TV is your best go this year

Nasher,

Just ask one of the D'Landers to give you a lift

They are a very generous bunch.

WTF.

Presuming you take a taxi you'll do it easy.

High tail it out of the ground across the rail lines to a prebooked taxi in Swan St (now called Olympic Blvd). From there cut through Southbank, straight on to city link and over the Bolte and out to Tulla and takes no more than 25 minutes, worst case scenario with traffic you've still got 30 minutes spare time up your sleeve.

Presuming your budget allows then all you have to do is make sure you can get that cab and I'd be confident you could.

Don't go soft Nasher we need you there.

Not worth the risk. I live 20 minutes short of Tulla and didn't get home tonight til 11.40. The traffic is unpredictable and after big crowd games it's taken me up to 1 3/4 hours to get home.

Disappointed for you, but it's the smart decision.

There's always next year.

Whoa this a bigfooty style bump of an old thread! These days, uber for sure. Far cheaper and far more certainty with it arriving when needed.

Nasher, I agree with DeeSpencer. I've done it a few times on Queens Birthday going back up to Sydney. No sweat for a 7.40pm flight. Dash out of the G the minute the game is finished. As DeeSpencer suggests high tail it over to Swans St or even shoot over the bridge to Alexandra Parade where an Uber can wait for you. I can give you the intersection if it helps. You'd only need 10 minutes max for the walk. It shouldn't take longer than 30 minutes on Queens Birthday from there to the airport but allow 40 to be more than safe. That's only 6.50. Gives you 50 minutes to kill. Can you just take hand luggage and check in online?  If so you could get there even 30 minutes after that and still make your plane. But you won't need all of that.

You can definitely do it. In fact I'll be doing exactly the same thing after round 2 and aiming to get on a flight at the same time.

Thanks mate, but this was for the 2014 edition of QB. Wife had a 9am exam the next morning. Someone bumped the thread for no discernible reason.

I made it along in 2015 and 2016 and flights and accommodation are already booked for 2017.

Ha! No worries. I really enjoyed the trip down to Hobart last year, although the Umpiring and the result were a killer.

Looking forward to Round 2. How sweet it would be if it was off a win the week before.

It will be tight. Game starts at 3:20 and will finish at 6. You will need to be at the gate by 7:20. If you left at 5:45 you would definitely make it. But battling football traffic right as the game ends might hurt you. I would highly recommend leaving between 5:30 and 5:45. You'll miss most of the last but only way to be safe.

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Demonland Trackwatchers were out in force as the Demons returned to Gosch's Paddock for preseason training on Wednesday morning. GHOSTWRITER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Kozzie a no show. Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
