Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

I reckon we should raid the Swans reserves.

Let's make heroes of those players who can't get a regular game in the seniors.

Lloyd Perris I rated highly before the draft last year, apparently Roosy was keen to draft him but because of the academy rules the swans got a free hit and we were told to f off, I wouldn't mind him and Tommy Mitchell coming down

I agree, I reckon Treloar is about to stamp himself as one of the best mids in the game, i reckon Shiel looks a really good player as well, would happily part with picks 3, 4 to pick up those two, offer 600k per year each and see just how loyal they are.

I'd like a player with a power fend off like Dustin Martin. I imagine Shiel being able to break away from the centre like that in the future.

To me Treloar looks like a good runner with the ball. but I haven't watched him too closely, admittedly.

As good as Cameron is or going to be I don't think we should be burning an early pick on a tall for me our early picks need to be used on midfielders inside/outside I don't care just midfielders. We have Dawes hogan they we look a lot better with better and more otter delivery into the fwd 50. I think we should target butcher from port can't kick for goal but he wasn't nicknamed the future for nothing a couple of seasons ago. A 3rd or 4th rd pick should get it done. Or as some have said memberly from the swans just offer him game time and he will come. But we need mids if they come threw trade or the draft we need mids mids and more mids and after that another mid then a half back flanker with a good kick. I hope blease kills it this weekend go dees

The Malceski talk is interesting. No doubt that the Swans will lose a player or 2, ROK will finish and potentially Adam Goodes which will free up some cash, so it may not be a big name that leaves, BUT Malceski would be great at MFC, great user and line breaker. True attacking defensive player. Interesting times ahead.

I agree. Would be a great fit as I think he'd have 1 very good, and 1 good season left in him.

The only problem is that he would water down the Frawley compensation.

I also see Stewart from Port (191cm utility) as a reasonable fit for us as a big bodied mid, but again I'd be reluctant to water down a top 5 pick.

Say if we get Frawley compo, then we trade it for say... Shiel.

So we no longer have that pick, are we THEN eligible to get FA's such as Malceski without the compo being affected? I can't see how it would affect it since we no longer have it...

the free agency compo comes after the free agency period, so out compensation would not be finalised until it's too late to pick up another player.

On malceski, usually I'd say 2 knee recos, turning 30 what's the point. But his year this year has been outstanding. Not to mention he is EXACTLY the type of player we need. Elite by foot coming out of the backhalf, imagine him kicking out of defence rather than Terlich/grimes been the running HBF. I'm all for getting him, Sydney has to lose some players out of the Tippett/franklin deals, yes it would water down our Frawley compo pick but if we got pick 4 and a earlier 2nd rounder(Frawley compo) plus malceski and only lost Frawley I'd. Say that's a win

Trading in a proven AFL PROVEN superstar vs 2 POTENTIAL superstars.

People over-rate picks. I'd trade 4+5 in a heartbeat for an AFL proven superstar. Anyone who wouldn't hasn't learnt anything from the past 7-8 years. We've had more top draft picks than any club (bar expansion clubs) and still haven't landed a superstar. Just because a player is picked early doesn't guarantee he will be a star. Look at the previous #1 picks; Gibbs, Kreuzer, Watts, Scully, Swallow, Patton. None are stars, in fact none are anything better than B grade at this stage. If the draft were done again today, none of them would be taken top 5. It's luck of the draw, and if you have the opportunity to trade in a superstar, you do it.

hmmm agree only to an extent.. let's ignore the last 3 drafts, as they are too young, and take the 5 before that as a decent sample set

2010: Swallow, Bennell, Day, Gaff, Polec

2009: Scully, Trengove, Martin, Morabito, Cunnington

2008: Watts, Naitanui, Hill, Hartlett, Hurley

2007: Kruezer, Cotchin, Masten, Morton, Grant

2006: Gibbs, Gumbleton, Hanson, Leuenberger, Boak

In that group of 25 there is a LOT of talent, randomly getting 2 of them you would be pretty happy. However, I agree, if it's that or someone like Dangerfield - forget it, take the established player

Great post. Can't disagree with any of those choices. Wasn't aware of a Buckley/ swanky rift?

IMO we need to inject a couple of "bad boys". We have got a goodie goodie easy pushover theme at our club.

Whoever has been in charge of our draft in previous seasons needs to be shipped out. So many wasted high draft choices totally wasted. Jack Trengove back next season doesn't exactly excite me. The return of a Mitch Clark would! That will be Hogan but he's going to take at least a season to develop and pick up the pace.

A trade along the lines of Watts for Jenkins would do it for me. While I like Watts I do feel he's had enough of a go.

A danger or fyfe would be great but we had our chance with Danger and passed on it.

Let's keep it to something that's doable. How about a two year contract for Christ Judd or Lenny Hayes? Our young mids need guidance and these two guys are the best in the business.

Players i'd like Melbourne to hopefully target at the end of the year.

Patrick Dangerfield- Complete longshot and we'd have to offer our best pick for the bull himself. Also, a pretty healthy pay packet. I'd assume only possible if Frawley Leaves.

Josh Jenkins- Absolute unit. He'd fit nicely with Hogan, Dawes, JKH and Howe down there.

Matt Rosa- Quick midfielder and a free agent, he'd definitely be worth a look.

David Mckay- A free agent who we have targeted previously, i'd love to lure him to the dees. Has dash that we need off half back.

Nathan Fyfe- Same boat as Dangerfield

Dane Swan- I know for a fact that he does not exactly love Buckley. Would come for abit of money and a free agent, we should seriously do our best to lure him.

Adam Tomlinson- In all honesty he'd be my favourite target out of this whole list. I rate him almost as high as Jesse Hogan, no joke. He's an absolute jet of a footballer and would love to take him off GWS (i'm still sad about Scully)

Will Hoskin-Elliot- Same boat as Tomlinson, would love to steal him off GWS

would be great to get one or more of these players, i'd be stoked

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

GAMEDAY: Rd 15 vs North Melbourne

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
