I think I am old but ten years ago I thought people my age were ancient.

I don't think I am old mentally but the body has been around long enough to tell me I am old.

My first MFC game was in 1960 and I was going to school so that might give you some idea.

Now can we get a fight up on that basis probably not you young [censored]!

Exactly, we werent that bad, just didnt make finals, kinda like a bulldogs or Richmond.

We also had the great Robbie flower .

It was a different game to watch, much more pleasurable than todays crap.

One on ones all over the ground, long kicking and high marking.

Even if you lost you could still take pleasure if a Ray Biffen or Steve Smith beat a top full forward.

We could also watch our boys , like Hardeman, Wells, alves, flower etc play for victoria, we actually had players in the top fifty.

even in the 90's... with Schwarta reeling around toward goal, or big Neita at either end working his magic, Alan Jakovich twirling the ball & chesting someone.

personality has gone out the window. & so have the laughs, & simple cheer.

I don't want to have to work to study what they're trying to do, chipping across here & then back there. then kick back to where it was.

I'm sick of this flooding, that causes "ring a ring a rosy" football.

lets have a Viney streaming out of the guts with a long bomb for goal.

A wingman with artistry, & enough room to dance thru the obstacle meadow on his way to goal.

like the one on one footy; but not a mass of rolling pawns covering the surface like ants on spilt sugar.

Just to put it in perspective, the opportunity to watch Flower play was generally only possible by going to the games. In the 60s through to the 80s there were no live games on TV and replays were limited to a maximum of two hours per week and generally didn't include Melbourne games because we weren't good enough. And it was worth going to games to see him play.

My memory of Robert Flower always has him as the best footballer I ever saw, sometimes memories exaggerate the facts.

After rewatching these clips I am convinced my mind hasn't exaggerated anything.

I am also convinced that without injuries Schwarza could have been better than Carey.

I try to look at things in three ways.
There is the first way I look at it and it is logically from an administrative point of view. Fixing the club up WILL take time. As I have said in previous threads, quite bluntly, it's time to acknowledge that nothing can be retrieved from the draft periods of 08-11, no matter how much we wish that to be the case. Roos needs to take the viewpoint of a lifeboat captain. If he can take some of those players and save them (in a football sense) then great. However, many aren't going to make it and don't just think it will be the usual whipping boys on here. I would say Grimes and Trengove really need to be looked at. From this point of view, expecting instant results is pointless and patience is required.
The next way I look at this is with my heart and here's where I am with you guys to an extent. Ever seen 'The Shawshank Redemption'? There is a scene where Tim Robbins' character crawls through 14 (?) football fields worth of sewage to get to freedom (after serving roughly 30 years in prison). Going to the footy and watching the club feels like (in a metaphorical sense) I am stuck in that sewage pipe but I have 28 fields of crap to crawl through. I thought footy was meant to be light entertainment. Time we can spend away from the workaday world and have some fun. It's not real life but watching the team feels like a kick in gonads with a pair of Doc Martins worn by a red kangaroo.
Which leads me to the other way I view this: logically as a consumer. Footy isn't life or death. Satyriconhome actually has that right (but he will then turn around and blast people for being traitors if they drop off). I like to think I have a bit more going on in my life than slavish devotion to one footy team. Footy is meant to be entertainment and right now it's not even close to entertaining. I might go to the footy next week or the next. However, from this point on, I refuse to let them define who I am or dictate my mood for the week. If that means not watching them if there is something better to do then so be it.

I rarely even check in here these days, and when I do I see thread titles like 'Changes for next week' and I think to myself how can you be [censored]? We've seen a thousand changes and none of them make a [censored] of difference to what happens at this club.

Good on those who keep the faith and enthusiasm. They are made of stronger stuff than I.

The only joy I get from footy now is watching teams and players I hate fail. And even that is losing its appeal.

I'll keep watching, and start playing Candy Crush the further we fall behind. I'm on level 500 for those interested.

It has been tough no doubt.

A mate of mine is Tiges member.He had a very stressful week and was at the game where the tiges screwed up a 30 point plus lead going into the last quater.He was genuinly in a strange emotional state and had to exit the ground.

I laughed and told him that I know how he feels.

We are a resiliant bunch. Its kind of ironic that people on this thread have an interest factor of zero ( almost ) in regard to the saga that is being a demons supporter . Or is it a cry for help?

We have seen some success. there was a very bleak period where die hards didnt see finals action from 1964-1987. Thats incredible support if you hung in there.

It will turn. Any players that want to go . Go. Jack Viney knows what it means to wear the red and blue. its probably all he has ever wanted to do.Create a backbone of talent that love the jumper/club and the club has a responsibility to get it right and are on that path imo.

I'm just sitting in my lounge room feeling lost with football. Our best player just retired, I can't hardly remember our last win. I have yet to see enough from anyone at melbourne to get excited about the future.

Every year we get told to expect improvement and competitiveness but it just seems every step we take forward every other already took that step a while ago.
