My thoughts

For club, players and supporters security and positive feelings the longer we go without a replacement named the better we look...

Jade Rawlings would have to be one of the favorites, players seem to respect and he has worked with Paul Roos very closely

Mark Thompson has also indicated he will be interested in coaching a 3rd club but I could not see him under Roos for 2 years

James Frawley wants stability and success, future coach concerns and wins, we all want it..

I would say that if they can't get an outsider in as Roosy's understudy during preseason 2014-2015, they will probably promote from within. Jade might be the one. I reckon that Roosy has looked at the process of training his successor up as taking two years, hence why there was an option of a third year in case they couldn't get the understudy teed up by said date.

Despite what has been said, aspirant coaches probably looked at us in the 2013 preseason and thought they would be drinking the arsenic laced kool-aid if they took the job on, Roosy being there or not.

Mark Thompson would be a no goer. As you said he won't want to be Roos' understudy (and rightly so since he has won more flags and been to more Grannies than PR). Secondly, he has his own ideas on how the game should be played and from a continuity point of view it wouldn't work. Roos would teach the boys how he wants them to play for 2-3 years and then another coach comes in and undoes it (for better or worse).

Hopefully we can get Paul Roos loving his footy/the club/Melbourne because then PJ can start nagging him to stay on for 3 years and then take on an advisory role for the new coach (like Neil Craig).

That way Roos can step out of the spot light a little (spend time with family) but still guide this club to a grand final.

I don't see Roos as someone who will leave a job half done, i reckon he will want to be around the group in some capacity until we have our chance to win a flag

there's a bloke over in perth who's worked under roosy who might not have been able to win a premiership, or he might have by then, and might be looking to move 'home' to melbourne in a couple of years.

in my opinion, there's no reason ross lyon can't be our replacement for roos if the man himself doesn't change his mind and wants to complete unfinished business at the dees.

My theory is, if there is substantial improvement this year and everyone but especially Roosy is loving the season, he might decide to review his decision to only be here to groom a successor. We have already seen him change his mind about coaching and explain why he changed his mind. I don't regard it as impossible that the same thing might happen about a longer tenure as head coach. His kids are both out of school now. He is earning more money than he could doing anything else in the AFL industry except for Vlad's job. If he's enjoying it, why wouldn't he stay longer. The signs are already promising that improvement is happening.

Roosy's hearts not in it,he just wants to make a quick 3 Mil and move on and it's giving our 2 most important Key Position players no direction whatsoever.

By mid year,Roosy should commit to a 3rd year and then it's not an issue as most clubs only offer their coach 3 years

I think this is what we are all praying for

Roos stays on as long term coach

I reckon PJ was in the same boat, wanted him long term, but thought if i can get him for 2 years he might get a taste for it again

I understand Frawley waiting it out till seasons end.

This will be a peak period for Frawley.

If we can sign PJ, Roos would probably sign that extra year.

I see then signing an extension together, at the same time & the same public announcement.

2Yr ext each ? later in the year?

I'm not sure that I 'see' them signing an extension together, but I sure as hell dream about it!

Rawlings is worth considering. Besides that I'd be looking at one of the Freo, Sydney or Hawthorn assistants. Didn't get Simpson or Dew last year but it will potentially be much more attractive this year if we win a few games and we can present at least Hogan and Viney as stars of the future.

Freo - Brett Kirk (maybe), Sumich (no), Mark Stone (worked for West Coast, then Sydney then Freo - watch this space).

Hawthorn - Brett Ratten (worth asking the question), Cam Bruce (hell no!!!), Luke Beveridge (good resume), Brendon Bolton (highly regarded former tassie player)

Sydney - Dew (already said no), Henry Player (doubt it), John Blakey (don't think so)

Another team at least will finish top 4 and probably have a highly rated assistant on board.

They want Ling.

But yes Brendan Bolten highly respected and a dark horse.

Give me Ling.

No info, no source.

Great skipper and doing some good stuff with the Roos.

Hopefully you have the same info regarding Chippa? haha

My sources have informed me that Simon Black was approached before committing to the Lions , However Roos was very positive in the meeting and is keen to get him down as an assistant next year if the Ling deal falls through. IMO the dream would be to secure Roos for another year, Ling as his heir apparent and Blacks as the apprentice to work side by side with Ling.

Isn't Ling a little raw in the coaching department? If that was the case then Roos would need to stay on for 3 years and maybe 1 year under Ling (advisor)

If the 2 year minimum that Clarkson is suggesting comes in, Roos would need to stay for 3, but it just doesn't seem right to me, in 3 years we could be pushing finals, surely Roos would wanna see if we can go all the way, why start a journey and jump ship half way through, especially considering the money he is on.

Give him a few months into the season and he'll realize he needs that third year. Either to see the team he's rescued from the depths make out into finals, or (worst case scenario) make us as competitive as the other teams in the bottom 8. I think that'll happen this year though.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
