Dean Kent and Matt Jones re-sign

The people here are idiots.

Thought you would have learnt that by now.

And the biggest idiot of all pushed the like button, good to see them sign up for 2 yrs .

Always good to hear about extensions but the M Jones one surprises me. Some here can't even see him getting a game this year.

The guy finished top 5 in a B&F in his first year (granted performances around him weren't great). Whilst his B&F position may not be as high in 2014 I doubt you will see lesser output from him and his position in the team will only be lost because others go past him not because he goes backwards. I doubt this would have cost us much and is a fair risk investment. I saw enough of Kent to see he was worth backing in a further two and again it wont have cost us much.

Roos and co. must have made these two priorities...

Kent looks very good at this early stage and Jones, while unfairly maligned because of his age and pedigree - was our second best midfielder and worked very hard.

If he improves, and there seems to be a backer on here for every player bar Jones to improve under Roos, he will continue to be given responsibility and time in the middle.

Big fan of Kent, so I'm stoked with that. As for Jones, I have no problems keeping him for an additional two years, but if all goes well I'm not sure he'll be best 22 in the later years of his contract.

Nice to get this done early in the year. M Jones certainly did enough to show he can set the bar for a few others, handy if nothing else and consistent too.

Kent obviously with his best ahead of him. Nice work Dees.

Good news about Kent, M. Jones though. meh.

Hahahaa,

I remember seeing this quite a few months ago, I presume it was you TSFKA, I say this quite often now. :D

I quite like both Kent and Jones. But what is effectively three years for two relatively unproven players is very generous IMO. Both may prove to be good enough to make this decision not hurt MFC but IMO it would have been better to wait and/or only offer one extra year.

Really really happy with Dean Kent re signing. This bloke has tremendous upside. Build his tank up a bit and he can be equally damaging as a high half forward with the occasional grunt work in the middle to take a load off Jones.

As for Matt Jones, he surprised me this year and I can only hope that he keeps working hard and improving to keep his spot.

Good news

Even if he's only our 30th best player on the list you still need depth especially running through the middle.

Presumably Mr Roos hold views differing from you. And in fairness perhaps he has more insight into M Jones' capabilities and his mindset.

Kent will be a contender for a fwd role, good back up and possible permanent in time..JKH may keep him out or visa versa early on

Matt Jones, hearing positive and a good first year in a bad side..has speed and Roos may play Matt in the mid area, may take over from Nate Jones in time

Genuinely chuffed about Kent. Pretty underwhelmed with Matt Jones but granted at the moment we're not exactly spoiled for choice. At the end of the day he was top 5 BnF and regardless of the quality around him it strengthens his case. Well done to him and hopefully he can repay the faith.

I rate both these players outside our best 22 and am therefore a bit surprised, mostly for M Jones.

However, it is a very very strong and decisive move from the coach and list managers. They clearly see an upside on locking these two on our list, having seen two months training. I also reckon that it is probable/likely that some players on the fringe - I don't know who but possible players like Pederson, Byrnes, Nicholson, Bail - will get little to no game time. The emphasis on midfield continues, and it is moving away from those who have been tried over and over in a mediocre team and have been inconsistent or under-skilled.

Question: do they have to get all contracts completed prior to the season beginning, in terms of list numbers and salary cap?

Matt Jones averaged amost 20 disposals a match, 4 marks and 2.7 tackles a game. He was top 5 in the bluey. It was his first year. There is no reason why he can't get better next year

I ha ve no idea why people are so surprised he got a contract extension

Agreed, which is why I'm not fussed in the slightest. Earned an extension, and will be more than useful, but as I said, I don't know if he'll be playing much in 2015 if all goes to plan. As depth I'll take him, which is why I'm happy with the decision.

I took the opposite away - get the easy little ones out of the way so they're not getting in the way when trying to negotiate the big contracts (Frawley et al).

Will be interesting to see what extent (if any) Chip chooses to play games with regards to his new contract.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
