Paul Roos preseason update

The difference may well be sue that they get paid to perform as professional athletes, "poor old " I don't think so.

The rest of us pay to see them.

OD, you take my words too seriously.

Enjoy your single, double or treble malts - will take your mind off the last few seasons. Hopefully you won't need them this time next year.

Oh sorry I need to turn up my humour meter.

I LOVE the fact that Roos is unwilling to commit the new 2013 draftees to expectations of not playing in next season. This indicates to me that there is now some strategy (yet to be proven successful; yet an attempt) for a development program. I have limited expectations for next season. As long as the team is competitive that's all I care about. Whether Roos proves a success or not, we know that everything to date has been done to give this club the best chance. Only time will tell!

Been saying all along that Garland will be one of the skippers.

I reckon Jones and Grimes will be the other two.

Pretty sure Roos had 3 skippers in Sydney's grand final years.

I was just thinking the same thing yesterday. I reckon you spot on with Grimes and Jones but also Garland. I think Garlo is exactly the sot of character Roos loves - thoughtful, showed a real passion and zeal last year in a very difficult year (his best season and it was perhaps the thing i most respected was the worse we played the better he played) and has a sense of and repect for the history. In other words a leader.

It's a real shame Clark hasn't been on the park much over the last couple of years as I see him as a very influential leader.

We're all aware the MFC really need to nurture and develop our younger players and help breed new leaders amongst the group. With that in mind, the perfect scenario for me is having Clark, Jones and Grimes as captains. We have all lines covered that way and it obviously means they share the load and can really own the line they look after. Jones would have fantastic support in Cross and Vince as other senior players, Grimes has Frawley and Garland as great support and Clark would have Dawes as another senior support in his division.

I understand it's unlikely given how little Clark has played, but he is a massive presence for us when on the park and we know he can perform. I would live to see the player vote him in and hopefully he stays fit before round 1.

This is what I hope for.

I suggest you get a bottle of Ardberg 10. Not dissing Laproaig, but I suspect you'll enjoy the Ardberg if you like peaty malts. Salty, oily, peaty, balance is amazing.

Also I am glad to see ice will not be added.

Thanks deanox, I haven't had Ardberg, I'll keep my eye open for it. When I first tried a peaty whiskey it took me awhile to get used to it but now I can't go back.

I spent a couple of years in the UK and quite often went up to Scotland, which is where I developed a taste for the stuff. I don't drink enough to be a real expert so I'm always happy for suggestions, cheers

I'm similar RE the peat flavour, took a while to get back into them. The Arberg 10 is truly fantastic for the price (you can pick a bottle up for $80) you'd pay much more for older whiskeys to meet it in quality and balance.

I'm relatively new to whiskey as well, so really only know what I have tried and what I've read but I have a few mates who know their stuff, sharing bottles is a good way to try lots and much cheaper than paying by the glass at a whiskey bar!

Let me know what you think of the Ardberg when you get around to trying it!

Holing up between here and New Year with saké and the Studio Ghibli collection. Happy Holidays, fellow secularists.

I want to get my kids 'Spirited Away' but am not sure what age is would suit - it's been years since I watched it!

Spirited away is pretty kid friendly… Parents get turned into pigs is about the worst moment, and any sane kid would enjoy that, having seen it many times. ;) Great films. Merry X

I tend to agree.

I accept that threads can detour, but they usually stay football relevant. Moderation has noticeably changed in recent months.

Nathan Jones was on the news tonight and mentioned that Roos is putting less focus on the sports science stuff and doing more on field stuff. Said players who may have been down about themselves now are different players and been given this lift of confidence in them that Roos has installed in them,

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
