Spoke with my mate today who recruits for Hawthorn. He has 3 TAC sides to monitor and has done so for a few years now. He attends all the meetings etc etc.

Interestingly, he told me today that Hawthorn rate Salem as the 3rd best player in this Draft. Freeman is rated at around 15.

Listening to SEN draft talk last night Tristan Fernando mentioned that MFC were big on Salem.

Scharenberg. It is unlikely that he will be available at 9 though.

I have no idea about players in the draft however I do like the idea of a quality left footer. Apart from the advantages it brings (a player who often has a bit more space to dispose of the ball and the way a good lefty can open up the play by going the opposite way opposition players intuitively expect) I like the aesthetic of a good left foot kicker. Plus I like Salem's name. I can hear myself yelling "burn them Salem!!!!"

I get the feeling that MFC will go for someone like Blake Acres or Luke Dunstan, they seemed pretty damn confident that the player they wanted @ 9 would still be there, and to me that suggests that it's a player who hasn't been in the spotlight as much as others have been.

First time in years that most people don't really have a clue of the order for this draft. Boyd @ 1, Kelly @ 2 and McDonald @ 8 seem to be the only definites... every other one still has a fair amount of speculation...

BTW, I have no idea and have no sauces etc... but it feels like they have planned offloading pick 2 for a player (Dom Tyson in this case) and dropping down to a later pick has been orchestrated very carefully. MFC for the first time in a long time give me a sense that everything is being carefully planned.

I don't think Jason Taylor or Viney are expecting to be suprised on Draft day.

What about the S - Witch from the back pocket?

The problem here is that ambiguity in the question. I voted for Scharenberg as the one I would pick if they were all available at pick 9. I would have voted for Freeman as the one I expect we will pick at 9.

Going off videos only, Salem is the one I like. Looks to have the whole package. Good skills and very nice lateral movement.

My feelings too Oucher, from the vision these two stood out to me as best suited, except Scharenberg, I think he trumps if available.

Yeah I agree with you there, that would be the reasoning behind us requesting another medical scan from the AFL on his feet,.. Don't reckon the recruiters thought there would be any chance Scharenberg would slip to us.

... that said we gave up pick 2 which was a certainty to secure him if we chose to... but obviously Dom Tyson and whoever @ 9 was viewed as trumping just Scharenberg... (Dom and Scharenberg on the other hand might be too good to be true)

Based on my scant knowledge of any of the candidates, it's Scharenberg for me in the (unlikely) event that he's deemed both 'fit' and is still available ....... followed by Salem and / or Freeman. one of whom should still be around at #9.

What's with peoples obsession with left footers? I personally couldn't give a stuff which foot they use as long as it hits the target.

I voted Freeman. He is powerful, quick and likes the hard stuff.

You can't teach someone to embrace the physical side of the game and he seems to love that and has the ability to break away from the packs once he gets the pill.

If he turns to be a dud, there no doubt will be a traditional Demonland witch hunt and burning.

For some reason people seem to think Freeman is harder at the contest then Salem. Where is the evidence of this? To my limited knowledge they seem very similar, with Salem the superior skills & Freeman the superior athlete. But both have good pace, core strength & look ready come round 1. I'm torn on these 2, with Scharenberg the only potential slider who I would take ahead of either. Can anyone give me a really good detailed comparison of the 2 most likely pick 9's?!?

Like Gysberts or Cook? or Tapscott?

I agree, don't like left field picks in the first round.

A lot of people do a lot of work researching and reviewing talent ... save the left field picks for the later rounds.

I shudder when in the past we have picked someone that doesn't have a profile and isn't in any of the experts phantom drafts!

Normally I would agree. I don't think left field in the context that most people are using here means crazy or unsubstantiated, it's more that each clubs needs/priority/ranking in terms of players appears to be a little more different than I can recall.

Tell me the last draft you can recall where so many positions in the top 10 were undecided? not for several years I'd suggest have basically 7 of the top 10 picks remained 'up in the air' to the degree it has in this draft in terms of order. There are perhaps 14-15 players that can conceivably go in the top 10 let alone outside of the top 20 where no one seems to have a clue!

All of the players being discussed here are very much with profiles and on all of the phantom drafts.

I think most likely we won't be able to dlc goose sharenburg as he will be gone.

Between Salem and freeman. Both high potential mids. Again have only seen videos but freeman's kicking concerns me.

So while freeman may have more explosive speed, I would go Salem with his lovely foot skills.

Anyway only a few more days till draft. It's like experiencing Xmas as a kid. Seems to take forever!!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
