AFL NATIONAL DRAFT - Pick 9

What

Recommended Posts

I'm concerned the Filth will take Freeman with pick 6.

As for Sheed he will slide to the Weagles at 11. From the reports I've heard he is vastly overrated because of a couple excellent games he had during the championships and his attitude is quite short of desirable.

100% true that gws selected players based on being teammates at junior level and friends.

Source: recruiter at another club.

That might be the recruiters theory not neccessarily a 100% truth.

Remember GWS put the main chunks of their list together through 4 different ways.

- Out of contract players - Davis, Ward, Scully

- 17 year olds - Shiel, Treloar, Jeremy Cameron, Bugg - here they likely took best available but Shiel and Bugg went to school together and would've played junior rep footy with

- 2011 AFL draft - Patton, Coniglio, Greene, Tyson, Adams etc

- 2012 AFL draft - Whitfield, O'Rourke, Ploughman

They have shown a liking towards Vic Metro but in some ways the Adams and Tyson trades have highlighted the value in doing that. They got good return on those guys. Compare that to what Brisbane have got for Yeo to West Coast and Polec back to Adelaide.

I am wondering why we didn't get this guy - him and Watts seem pretty close

Seriously Watts..

Wait a second... you are both against the paying out of Tom Scully's family considering it childish (The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill, p.180), yet you insinuate this garbage towards one of our currently contracted players.

Come on fellas.

order of preference...

Freeman, Lennon, Crouch, Kolodjashnji, Bontempelli, Sheed, Dunstan, Salem, Taylor.

Assume Boyd, Aish, Schareberg, Kelly and Billings are top 5.

BTW our pick is effectively pick 8 as Kangas pick #8 is Luke Mcdonald as father/son selection.

I've seen this written a few times and can't say that I agree with the sentiment. We may have the 8th "live" pick but by all reports Mcdonald was widely rated as a top 6 recruit in this years draft and that the kangas, while paying a high price, aren't paying overs for his selection.

Tom Boyd is a lock for #1 - do we now have pick 7? Common opinion on here, as you have highlighted, seems to suggest that Aish, Scharenberg, Kelly and Billings are a lock or close to for the top 5... by your reasoning, with them eliminated and McDonald committed, does that mean we effectively have pick 3?

That probably sounds harsher than I intended it, just my view that McDonald not being accessible to us isn't to our advantage. Now if a club had committed to an Ayce Cordy bean pole type ruckmen with a father/son selection before our pick, I would be ecstatic.

I think you misinterpreted my post.

I was not paying out Watts only making a joke about the whole drafting friends idea.

I think it is wrong to pay out a 20 year old in Scully for making a very tough decision - he was offered security for not only himself but his family and seemed to be on the outer at Melbourne. Yes maybe he didn't go about it in the best way but he was a 20 year old and made a decision that most 20 year olds would. To attack Scully is tight but to attack his family is just low.

We won out of it in the end so move on.

Christian Salem looks great on the AFL draft prospects today. He is a left footer so I think that Roos will consider him at Pick 9. He also seems a mature young man who would put the team first.

This 'drafted mates' idea: you have a group of kids who have gone through the system together, playing u18's, TAC, or whatever. You then select from that pool some players for your list. Likelihood some of them will be 'mates''. I imagine that we are not going to look at some of their mates who don't play footy, just to keep a tethered goat at the stables so the thoroughbred hangs around.

If we want to keep a top pick, it's because it's a great club, where they get paid a heap and have the chance to win. Most of these guys would sell their mums to get drafted. If we make a selection because of teenage bromance (and it isn't a coincidence of being together in the same system), then we truly are screwed up.

Imagine your mate being drafted to 'encourage' you to stay.

We would be better off drafting some kids with personality who can make friends with our list.

Uncanny resemblance to Luke hodge the way he kicks. Looks a really solid prospect from the highlights. Could be in the nix for us at 8 maybe?

My completely uneducated leap to rash conclusions based on some sound analysis from good judges:

5. Gold Coast: KK - Scott Clayton special and they need someone like him off HB.

6. Collingwood: Freeman - to replace Swan and fair chance they'll get Bontempelli at 10 too, only Brisbane and us between them.

On that basis only 3 of your 4 - Aish, Scharenberg, Kelly and Billings - fit in picks 2-4, one of them at 7 to Brisbane?

Might have another look at that Lennon footage ...

Yep. Salem for me.

Haven't seen him live, but from the various online clips he seems to have good disposal and very good vision, in the style of Luke Hodge as others have noted. However, he doesn't look particulary quick. Short and stocky build, breaks tackles but not blessed with speed. Does this sound about right to those that have seen him play? I would have thought that a lightening quick mid with good delivery skills would be handy for us now that we have Tyson, Vince, Michie on board.

this article suggests that has a tank, good leg speed and runs well both ways. Sounds good to me.

Then we'll take Freeman.

Sorry to say but it will definitely be the other way around. As I stated in the Bontempelli thread my scouting/ recruiting friend considers Bontempelli too slow for AFL (in regards to pace and play) and thought he could slide to the second round. Even Bontempelli states in his recent youtube interview he initially had trouble adjusting to the speed of the games in the championships - AFL will be a massive step above that.

It sounds like WC are interested in Sheed, they love local talent and believe he will slide to pick 11. I stated above his attitude is short of desirable, you could compare it to a Palmer or Masten (a bit cocky and FIGJAM) who were both also highly rated juniors with not so desirable attitudes.

I was definitely concerned when the filth and WC did that trade, initally I was thinking Sheed was going at 6 only leaving BL capable of scooping Freeman. If the filth do I hope we pick up Crouch.

...unless we want Lennon more, which I think we should.

Going purely on the video highlights it would be Lennon for me, huge upside and a lot to work with. If we want hard at it it's Crouch but I think we have that covered now.

Some fair info in the above post, that I don't disagree with.

Bontempelli moves fast when running in straight lines, but could be construed as slow-thinking.

But why Crouch?

Yes he gets a lot of he ball, but his skills are about a 4 out of 10.

Not very clean, just shovels it out workmanlinke and he's not a good runner.

We have Jordie for that.

It will be interesting, Freeman, Lennon, Sheed, who will it be? Not unhappy with any and who knows who else will slide?

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.
