Would Dom have been a top 10 pick in this years draft with the benefit of 2 years development at AFL level.

If the answer is yes, we have got two top ten players for Pick 2 which is a great get.

The difficulty in getting picks right and the risk of getting it wrong has forced our hand to diversify a little. I am hopeful that the diversification strategy yields a great result on both fronts due to the eveness of the draft in the top 9 picks.

I am happy with the strategy, lets hope the sensible option pays divedends for us!

I'd be lying if I said I've seen heaps of Tyson. But the fact that 2 years ago he was pick #3 and now has the advantage of two years in the system, sounds like we landed somebody who can make immediate impact, but more importantly, can make long term and lasting impact because of their age and quality.

That we got pick #9 back just means we can go into next year with a much better balance of young developing mids, and ones that have had some development in their body to withstand the heat week in week out.

To think that next year we can have a starting midfield of Jones, Viney (now in his third season really), Tyson (3rd season), Toump (2nd season), Michie (3rd season)+ Pick 9, that is worlds away from what we had going this year.

The best thing about it all is that we haven't compromised our long term future success by going for short term solutions, and aging stars.

Dom Tyson is quality. If he can stay fit and on the park, it's a great choice. The interesting thing coming from the Tyson and Michie gets, and the off field recruits (Stone, Miller ....) is the investment in culture. Dom Tyson was a uniquely impressive character for his age when I had contact with him 2 years ago (and I can tell you will be rapt to come home) and according to some of of the reports on here about Michie, he has a great rep also. When you think of the character of Nat Jones, Jack Viney, Jacks Trengove and Grimes, and Jimmy Toumpas from the midfield alone, I think there's as much an effort to build culture and ethic at the 'New Roos Dees', as there is to recruit talent and plug holes.

I may be wrong, and I only heard the end of the discussion between Wallace and Gromit on trade radio, but Barrett said '...so you don't think this is the difference between North making the grand final Terry' in terms of the Dal Santo trade.

I agree with your sentiment. October and November is always Christmas time on Demonland and by Round 1 the reality bus is back.

I understand your hesitant optimism completely, but at least this time or young unproven midfield contains highly rated potential kids (Tyson, Viney, Toumpas, pick 9), a couple of developing kids with who have shown a bit (Michie, M Jones and some of our existing younger inexperienced players), some players with 3+ years experience who should be easy to take a step up under Roos/Stone (Trengove, Grimes, Watts) and a senior midfield leader (Jones).

If we can snare Vince or Cross and they can play the rule of number 2 and 3 mids for a year or two, we suddenly have a core that may come together.

None of those players have question marks for the wrong reasons. They might not have developed as we'd have liked bit they aren't the unfulfilled potential, poorly behaved or NQR group we've had in the last decade. Yet.

Time will tell. Stone for Royal may be the most important change we've made all off season.

what do people think - should we still make a play for Vince and Myers/Lyons?

I would say definitely get Vince but at this stage it looks like we might get Vince and Cross and use the rest of our picks.

Or we could try and get Vince and Myers or Lyons and forget about Cross. We might need to put a player on the table to get both though (if we want to keep pick 9).

It depends if Roos wants to chase a small forward or a ruckman (don't know if there are any decent ones in this draft)

Maybe Vince and Lyons for our Sylvia pick (hopefuly 21ish) + pick 53 and a player?

It's true that Vince and Cross remain important acquisitions in terms of becoming competitive next year. If we get neither, it will take a fair bit of the gloss off the trade period overall.

Not sure he's behind Greene. Admittedly had second year blues but he was a sensation in his first year. Expecting him to bounce back strongly next season as he learns to deal with the attention from opposition. Agree with the rest.

He's not 'A' grade.

I suppose it depends on how you rate players, but you've got to be AA quality to be 'A' grade in my eyes. It's no sleight on him to call him B+, especially as he is.
