Would you be happy to wait for Dew or should we get someone who is available straight away?

Want the best Fit to remedy our clubs Culture. The handover when Paul Roos exits, will be crucial & the biggest time & Decision this club has faced.

For, if we fail to change the Culural Ways of this once momentarily Powerful Club, successfully, it could be the final curtain.

Wait for the best Cultural fit... Roos should choose. if it means waiting till next year for Stewie Dew, then wait.

Roos has said the successor is best in place early to guarantee players of a smooth transition and plan. With Roos possibly only on for 2 years that makes it vital.

I also presumed the successor would be midfield line coach, take control of the most important line in the team and develop those guys up so he knows what he's dealing with as senior coach. If we don't have Dew this year then someone else takes the midfield and then what happens to them when Dew gets parachuted in to the senior assistant. It's also likely to cause more disharmony

People say we should wait for cultural reasons. I'd say the right way to build a culture is to keep making smart and upfront decisions and sticking to a plan. That's how you keep the organisation moving forward.

I'll trust Roos, but I will be very disappointed if we don't have a senior assistant in place for next season and then the senior assistant is only here for 1 year under Roos.

Roos said 2-3 as head coach..this all but guarantees 3... Dont sweat it..:)

I think we will. Put it down to the argy bargy of negotiations. If Dew is the anointed one I don't see him at Sydney next year.

:wacko: You suppose Roos is a smart operator but a runner.. Im not sure youve read anything by him or observed his patterns but doing a runner...is not Paul Roos. He sets things up for success, not failure. He takes a pragmatic approach not a rosey eyed frivolous one.

He has already said it will be 2-3 years. He is far too ego driven to allow something to falter for the sake of 12 months.

If it takes another 12 months to get his choice of successor then it is a monty he will remain senior coach for the following two years.

this 'organisation' will & is moving forward, as you typed that...

the cultural fit is imperative.

Its the lack of cultural nouse that has put us in perenial failing cycles since this club was born.

more haste & less understanding of our chronic failings, will see the final nails being forged.

we need our assistant coaches, but we can wait for the senior assistant. especially since he may have already worked with Roosy in the past, & already has a sound grounding in Roos's philosophies.

ie. Dennis Pagan, John Northey, Robert Walls to name a few.

Not saying he won't be, merely saying, he hasn't coached a game yet and we don't have any wins on the board :)

We can also name many who have coached well at a second club

Jeans, Barrassi, Malthouse at 3 wait and see at 4, Matthews, Lyon.

So whilst I accept you say he maybe a good coach I tend to think it his structure and culture building for the future which will be the greatest strength.

Oh and Robert Walls did a great job at cash strapped Roys in the early 80's before coaching Carlton to a flag and took Brisbane to their first finals series where they got closer to the Blues in 95 than anybody in the finals. Richmond for him was a step to far IMO.

Northey took both the Tigers and Bears/Lions to finals, including a preliminary.

Walls was more successful at his second club than his first.

Trade radio and Spud Frawley just said

  • Melbourne interviewing couple of candidates in regards to successor
  • Basically saying Dew needs to be released from the swans
  • Contract is a contract and Swans have the last say
  • Reason why he wont get released is basically because its Paul Roos ex Swans coach offering him the gig.. if it was another club it wouldn't be an issue.

Maybe the AFL will lean on Sydney about releasing Dew as part of accepting the Buddy deal and guilt over not giving us a PP.

I love it! Finally doing what ever it takes to get the best.

If that means waiting a year so be it, Swans can pay and train our coach for a year and he can tap up some players to come with him.

Could certainly live with that! But is it unlikely to be Dew when Mahoney said today he should be announced in the next couple of weeks?

It would be rediculous if Sydney upheld their decision to make sure that Dew doesn't leave if we found him successful.

The situation would be pretty icey up there if they did. Sydney wouldn't be investing well into their football department if they have an assistant who really doesn't have their heart in it. And Stuart Dew wouldn't have his eye on the game if he knew that in 12 months time he will be gauranteed a Senior coaching gig elsewhere.

And News just in that Adam Simpson is now coach at West Coast means our options are now limited I guess.

Restricting employees from progressing makes them an undesirable work place IMHO. Will make other assistants think twice about signing long contracts.

That they are using their stupidly inflated cap to their advantage is their good fortune. I'm sure we'd happily accept the same benefits.

So your angst is over a tiff with a former coach ?

Petty.

They are a brilliantly run club and we can only aspire to emulate their environment. Are they carrying on about Dew ? Sure. But that sure as hell doesn't define that organisation.

Im not so sure they are so brilliantly run anymore. Time will tell but I think some wheels re wobbling.

True but if you look at one of Roo's prodigy...Ross Lyon both clubs he has been too have results in player improvement and at least GF appearances. While Lyon is his own man he would have learnt many of his skills under Roo's ie Longmire, their players play for them and each other, a high difference that we have experienced since Northry. But you can also see other coaches her moved clubs for even more success..Roo''s is about getting the foundations right, which does include winning.

I've started to wonder that myself.

Surely the golden years can't last forever, there will be a gradual decline.

Colless, Roos, Stone, etc leaving.

MFC had a great culture once, but that faded over time.

Having said that, BH's point stands about them having an organisational culture to aspire to.

    UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

    Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft.
