Has Josh Mahoney secured the GM of Footy Ops job?

Seems to me that Roos isn't unhappy with Mahoney and Jackson gave him the trial in the position that he didn't really need to do. If we were to find a replacement you'd think we'd do it now rather than in a few weeks in the middle of the trade and Free Agency period.

What's everyone's thoughts with Josh?

Personally I like him. He's smart. Smart enough to realise he wasn't cut out for coaching, especially under Neeld and went and did extra business courses and headed in to a footy business/administration career.

Of course he has the link to Schwab and Neeld as well as lack of experience against him. But we have an experienced head coach in Roos. An experienced recruiter (even if he hasn't been the number 1 guy for long) in Jason Taylor and I believe Viney is heading up list management now (he's never had a very defined role). Not to mention our assistant and development coaching is set for a big overhaul with a senior assistant, an experienced assistant in Allison and hopefully George Stone heading up development. Does it not make sense to stick with Mahoney as the admin guy and back Roos' leadership and the rest of the team to revamp the footy department?

Heard him speak in Perth and his over-use of business speak was cringeworthy imo. I think he's read too many books and needs an opportunity to put it into action. Whether he gets that opportunity with a decent CEO to report in to remains to be seen.

He certainly has the drive to do well and you have to admire that.

From what I've read though it would appear that Geoff Walsh has more runs on the board.

He's acting in the job so he is going to be mentioned by Roos and PJ as we need a Footy Head in the off-season.

If and when PJ gets that last position he wants some experience in then I don't know what they have in mind for Mahoney.

Maybe another succession plan?

Or perhaps he will sent away aswell.

I would say it is decidely up in the air.

Wasn't Walsh in the US attempting to help his son get settled on a college punting scholarship?

I don't think Josh is a strong character as a manager.

I thought he was a good footballer.

A rank line coach

He was put in the role of FM and has held that position for 12 months.

He still has a lot of learning to do.

If we need to sort out the FD properly we need a strong GMFO with EXPERIENCE

Yesterday on SEN the Ox was definitively stating that Walsh will be GMFO, repeatedly.

The others were making a joke of it, asking if it had been officially announced yet.

Not the greatest source, but make of that what you will.

There is no reason to delay announcing the position other than Walsh returning and confirming he has the job. Mahoney is keeping the seat warm.

Walsh is the last piece of the puzzle.

I might be wrong, but I thought that PJ made a comment along the lines that we might re-evaluate who we put in as GMFO now that we have secured Roos. I got the feeling that he was indicating that we might not need to get someone like Walsh with Roos there... it could have been a misinterpretation on my behalf.

Edit: I think he said it in the Presser where they announced Roos btw.

That's the impression I got too. PJ said he would be re-evaluating the job, but that's not to say that he's changed his mind.

I think the appointment of Roos bodes well for Mahoney, but, if we had the opportunity to get a highly experienced GMFO in Walsh, why wouldn't we take that option?

PJ talked about the 4 positions he wanted to fill in that presser - Prez, CFO, Coach, and GMFO.

It sounded decidedly like he was not done because he said the GMFO was the last one he had to get to.

Totally agree RPFC.

If they wanted a GMFO why would they appoint JM.

He would have been happy to carry on with the lowly paid FM

A GMFO would be a highly paid position, with a lot more responsibility.

Now slightly off the subject my main concern, is what is the succession plan to replace PJ at the end of 2014.

I just shake at thought of who we get. Could it be another CS. Or do we get the AFL overseeing it for a few more years.

Id be surprised if it isn't the recently appointed CFO de Crespny (sp?). Has previously worked at AFL

I think PJ will stay on at least while Roos is at the club so we should have him for 2015/16 and he will have a succession plan well in place by then.

One poster thinks Roos will be CEO, others GMFO, there was a mention in the papers he could be a paid Board member, and I think we should get him to play the role that Craig was doing.

He's doing everything after these three years are up.

I heard he was doing a boot studding course.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi
