The Successor

Channel Seven weathergirl Sarah Cumming?

Who's the weathergirl on Seven in Melb these days?

Is it Judd? Can she be bumped? She's horrible.

Surely Channel 10 is looking for an upgrade?

If that is his girlfriend the man has done very well,he should stay in Sydney and do whatever the hell she tells him to do. WHATEVER.

Although, I am now more intrigued than ever, Dew is obviously a brilliant communicator and strategist.....get him to Melbourne now!

I think that people are missing two vital points.

With most succession plans :

1/ You dont only do you own job - you are involved in the learning the job for which you have been annointed as successor ( as in Dews case senior assistant then becoming head coach) - he would be involved in the decisions and tasks that Roos does so he can learn the skills. It is a different apprenticeship from just being an assistant and then getting the top gig. It is working with Roos as head coach for next 2-3 years so at the end of his apprenticeship he is more than just an assistant that has taken over cold. So to all those saying that of the rumoured names "what has he done" - the experience to be a head coach is going to come over the next 2-3 years whilst it may not be there right now - thats why it is a succession plan.

2/ All succession plans I have seen are not locked in stone and there is an out clause for both the company and the successor - The likes of a Dew may get 2 years into the apprenticeship and say it aint for me and likewise Roos may say that he hasnt come along as hoped and all bets are off - it is not usually a clause made public but it is there. The clause usually comes with golden handshakes for the successor if the succession plan doesnt go ahead.

And yet he is only 34 - you would think he had been coach for a couple decades by reading that.

That's really the only thing that worries me - at 34 there must still be a few question marks over his ability to perform at the top (don' want to make a Neeld mistake again).

If we do get him I would like him to have as long as possible under Roos. Also I would like Melbourne to have two possible successors so we don't put all our eggs in one basket.

It would be great if Roosy stayed coach for 3 years and then 1 year as Dew's senior adviser. But I only see that happening if Roosy believes in the direction of the club after his 2-3 year contract ends.

I hope you weren't one of the fawn dogs salivating over Simpson before he took over at WCE...

Dew, or whoever takes the role, is allowed the luxury of a running head start under Roos. Whatever flavour of the month amongst assistants will come and go and we will groom this person for our own ends.

There is no perfect way to install a coach. We have decided to Poach and Groom.

The plot thickens...

Of course Dew has made a presentation to the selection panel, or at least Roos, Mahoney and Jackson.

The process would never go this far without it.

He hasn't been granted official permission to interview, but that is moot.

It's only relevant because permission to accept the position would be implicit.

I imagine if Dew is not released from his contract (extremely unlikely IMO) we'll just wait for him.

Worst case scenario is that he changes his mind, we'll move on and and just grab the best candidate next year.

It's not the end of the world.

The important thing is the cultural shift, and the coach or successor alone won't do that.

I think the plan will be for roos to settle in for a year. Which would mean he coaches for 3... What about Voss? I know he shot himself with the fev trade.

While I am confident in the Roos plan, it is a bit if a worry, great assistants, like coaches, do not grow on trees.

Looks like a year without a senior assistant.. I'm not sure I like that!

Bugger - goes against all our inside 'sources'........

I hear there is a so called Mark Neeld waiting in the wings?

Now I am actually beginning to worry if we can lure anyone to the club this year - Roo's or not.

so ... there were 5-6 candidates according to Mahoney, Burns, Simpson and Dew were three of these candidates. We haven't spoken with Tudor or Bassett, who does that leave?

I wonder whether we look to contact Bassett,... who else? Voss & Harvey are unlikely IMO. What about Lappin who is at Geelong currently? Sumich?

Could Rawlings be a chance to be elevated from within the coaches we already have?

Interesting to see what our next comment is on this... and is it just me or does Paul Roos & PJ seem very quiet at the moment? it could just be that Mahoney is the person that is visible to the media due to the trade period I guess....

PJ has never been one to approach the media - so far he has let his actions do the talking.

I think we need to land a decent player - show that we are a desirable club. It would be nice for one of our players to come out and say that anyone who gets picked up by Melbourne would be very lucky.

So far we seem to be that smelly fat kid at the front of class who nobody wants to sit next to. God I would like to be a fly on Paul Roos shoulder (I am so sick of being in the dark).

One thing I have noticed is that since pj has come to the club .....nothing has been leaked.....yes..rumours & innuendo but nothing of fact. I have complete faith in what roos & pj are doing.......if you think for one moment that roos took on this position without having his "team" in place then you sell him short. I have no interest in listening to the rumblings & speculation from journalists & posters alike who have nothing better to do than try & fill space in a long off season. I don't believe roos is the "messiah" but will trust the expertise, respect & knowledge that someone like him brings. I don't believe in the perception that the mfc is an unattractive place to go to......if you put the right deal in front of anyone they will take it. So far we are bemoaning missing out on players & assistant coaches when in reality there has been no concrete evidence of any firm offers being made. I think,it is exciting to see what is unfolding & I am happy to wait. After all,it is a long time till February. String it out i say !

Matthew Knights or Brett Ratten anyone?

Brett Ratten maybe as midfield coach or in some line position but I am not sure if his game style really matches Roo's.

PJ and Roo's said they where surprised how few professional/experienced staff we had at the club - we need to start fixing that.

I still think Sydney put him between a rock and a hard place. If they gave him their blessing early then he probably would've taken the gig. Instead he had to choose between 1 year stuck at Sydney then taking the Melbourne job or the 3 year deal at Sydney. But good luck to them.

I'm not sure why I liked Dew besides his novelty come back showing you can be portly and dominate AFL. He was large and in charge.

Anyway back to the drawing board. Simon Goodwin has signed on at Essendon. Geel, Haw, Syd, Coll a lot of the recent premiers have been stripped of the glamour assistants.

Mark Stone or Simon Lloyd from Sydney. Look that up - http://www.fremantlefc.com.au/footy-centre/coaching-staff

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w
