Weller seems like a real top gun player. Dont let hm fly away or we'll look like a goose !! Hes a real goer but not a wingman.

BB. If we want a premiership, we're going to need to be harsh. Bartram's tenacity and no fear approach was admirable but in the AFL, you need to bring more to the table. For too long have I seen mediocre players represent the MFC and it's infected supporters. They've become used to having mediocre players and so they stick up for them whenever a bad word is said. I'm sure Bartram is a lovely guy. But I'm strictly talking football here and I want to leave all emotional pre-dispositions aside for the betterment of our club.

I want a god damn premiership.

Absolutely agree with that, we've had some 100% triers like Godfrey, Barters and Nico, but they simply aren't up to AFL standard and it amazes me to see Landers looking at every delisted Hack suggesting we should sign them up.

I can think of only one reason to pick him!

But a name is hardly enough.

Joel Wilkinson would be of interest IMO.

Has elite speed and if i remember the fastest recorded time from any draft camp

Its what he does when he hasn't got the ball

Its not the sort of player that would interest Paul Roos

Weller looks like he prefers the Saints but maybe they gave him an extra donut in the interview

Apparently there were some other clubs looking at him and unsure if one of them was us

Not sure about him but i bet our FD do

The way the Saints are traveling he could be there next Coach

They seem to have a few too many Mavericks though

Bottom Line : Until he signs he is available IMO

Pick 9,40, or 57 is a No

Rookie Just a Maybe

Fox Footy is replaying every game played during the season on a round by round basis. I taped the Round 23 game between GWS and GCS primarily to see Dom Tyson who was playing his second game coming back from injury. I thought he started off a bit slowly and improved over the course of the game. It was a fair effort from him in the circumstances to get 18 disposals and there is clearly a lot of improvement in him. His teammate Scully just went (13 disposals). How he was placed in their b & f beggars belief.

The GWS performance was completely overshadowed by Gold Coast who were totally dominant with the Brownlow Medallist killing it and Bennell, O'Meara and a few others outstanding.

Strangely enough, one of their players who blitzed was Mav Weller who was surprisingly dumped from the Gold Coast list after picking up 27 disposals in that game.

All the 'rumour" is that Mav Weller is a "bit of a di#ck@head and is full of himself. No doubting his footy ability ... but was behind 5-6 mids at the Suns (Suns will bring in Jack Martin this year as well).

He is 20-21, ready to go and can play at AFL standard. I would look at him as a definite rookie option.

Last year we had hannath train with us and then get pinched. This year we have only Jetta who the other clubs know and who we would not be shattered to lose to another club. I think we will be raiding a couple of other clubs training invitees.

If I remember correctly, we did something similar with Jimmy Magner, who was training with St.Kilda at the time.

Weller seems to have been able to pull some decent stats playing for GWS and now has a slightly more mature body than most of the 18 year old rookies. we would have to be a little crazy to not consider drafting him as a rookie if he is available.

He was at the 'suns'.

As for mature bodies and stats. The first is talked about way too much, especially when a player has little ability. (Mav Weller in this case). Having a mature body won't magically give you the basic skills you need to posses at this level.

The second point. Stats.. Again, numbers give me the shits. Gysberts and Morton. Have a look at their stats early on in their careers and tell me what they're up to nowadays?

I think for our football club at present, we need genuine talent and ability. Players who are gifted AFL players. Players who I know will make sound decisions under pressure and hit targets. Be able to handball, mark well and block. We need players who can do the basic AFL skills very well.

Mav Weller may 'fill a hole' for a club that are looking for a specific role. One that won't require him using the football much. Perhaps a stopper.

We don't need any of those. We still have enough players on our list who have the same skill set as him and we'll need to squeeze them out over the next few drafts, not add another one.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
