The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

I think it is obvious that we it the Tyson deal done last week to keep other players out of it. The longer it drags on the more chance we might be usurped by more attractive club.

So to Osilik, who thinks we paid overs although measurement is a bit fraught this early - we might not have been able to do the deal at all if it was delayed and another team entered the fray.

I actually disagree. I really don't think anyone could think we paid overs.

In many years there is a standout group at the to of the draft. Top 2-4 players, or maybe a top 2 followed by 3-6 players who could go anywhere.

In this draft there is a stand out pick 1, then a bunch of players (some rated higher than others but it's a sliding scale, not a clear cut step ahead, and the difference is arguably based on needs and player development level).

We swapped pick 2 for a previous top 3 pick and a second bite at the cherry on pick 9.

Where would Tyson go off he was to nominate for the ND this year and said "I don't care who takes me?" Pick 2? Pick 5? Pick 10?

I would trade picks 2 and 20 for pick 5 and 9. Even for picks 9 and 10 is a good deal given the flat nature of this draft.

We just got two top 10 talents for one top 10 pick. The rest is just maneuvering to make the deals a bit more even.

With the trade over could it possibly mean that Frawley may be staying or am I clutching at straws?

Can't see him leaving, although i think he is out of contract next year, put a contract to him.

I think the reason it's an A+ is that in assessing the performance it's important to take into account the desirability of the destination.

Absolutely. GWS and MFC share the employer of last choice notwithstanding the competence of Roos and Jackson to right a sinking ship.

What I think is interesting is that we didn't trade anyone out and not only that but there was little if any talk in the media about any of our players being traded out.

It could have been because they just were not rated or it could have been a philosophy. I think it's the second. I think Roos recognizes the need to restore confidence and if he had traded players out this could send an unwanted message to the playing group but more importantly he recognizes that the previous FD were so inept that he can't really make a fair judgement on the marginal players like Tapscott, Blease or Strauss.

This contrasts so much with last year. I wonder which will produce better results?

Could be it, but I reckon there was simply minimal to no interest in any of our potential discards. We didn't want to throw players away for nothing like last trade period, so we held tight.

I believe so. I posed the question some time ago re which melbourne players would be automatic inclusions in another side if we folded. Answer = buggar all.

I'm staggered by the devaluation of players once they are drafted. Tyson is pick 3 originally and has 2 years on the clock and we were somehow ripped off paying pick 2 and upgrading other picks - 20 to 9 being a very valuable upgrade.

Players at this level don't depreciate once drafted, they're not like cars driven out of the new car yard, they actually appreciate. But people get so intoxicated by blue sky and want to punt a "star" they interpret very good trades as negative.

People are waxing lyrical over this years crop of early picks but it will be highly unusual if 3 or 4 of them aren't disappointments if not outright duds. Still people will continue to be blue sky junkies and then lash out at those who fed their fantasies and got the dud.

I'd be very surprised if there weren't clubs interest in Blease or Fitzy. It's not only a matter of how good a player is now but what the new club believes they can do with the talent. And every club knows how poor we've been at developing our talent.

Roos has backed the list and his ability to do something with it. Neeld just blamed the players. Someone should have given him a mirror for Christmas.

Makes me wonder if having Roos worked against us in the case of guys like Blease and Tappy. "Well if Paul Roos doesn't think he can develop him into a decent player, what chance do we have?"

My post mentioned automatic inclusions Bob. At the time Clarke and Jones would have about been it. I agree that Neeld sent our players into fast reverse and, I also like Fitzy. Hope Roos can right the ship!

You highlighted " minimal interest in potential draftees" and went on to say " I believe so". I was referring to that point and take no issue with our players struggling to be AFL standard.

The media expect us to select the players they choose and in the past we have; this time we went our own way and it's upset a couple of them. Care factor, zero.

I'm happy, I would expect the club are happy, care factor 100%.

I think they'll pick Freeman at pick 9 and that will top off a good draft period for us, I like Sheed but I think Roos likes Freeman.

Either will be good, will that make Barrett any happier, who gives a [censored].

The footy media these days tend to have no idea until about a minute before the news breaks anyway.

I don't think Freeman will be available at 9 - Collingwood are apparently keen on him with 6 but I hope he falls through. If he's not available, Sheed or Lennon could be likely types.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
