David Rodan

Surely he gets some sort of praise? I thought since he has came into the side he has provided a lot of dash and flare and loves to take the game on. I hope he stays in all year.

Another question. If Rodan continues this form right till the end of year, would anyone be aginst the idea of a one year deal with Rodan and continue his mentoring role with likes of Viney, Toumpas, Kent, Barry plus another top 5 pick coming in aswell. I mean he adds alot of experience and along with Davey I couldn't see why we shouldn't give them another year to keep around for experience and depth.

Thoughts?

PS: What a ripper goal last night!!

I've been a critic of him, been calling for him to be dropped for the last month.

Was good last night, that goal was a ripper. Credit where it's due.

However, that brings the grand tally of good games he's played for us to 1.

Plays like a buck rabbit in seaon and on speed.

Does some great things half the time and the other half makes me want to put him in a stew.

Always had the physical tools to be elite.

I don't think he will continue after this year but that doesn't mean he can't be of value for 2013. He will provide experience for the younger players and from all reports has been a wealth of knowledge for J Viney.

Sensational goal on the weekend, hopefully there's more to come!

Would we count his game under MN as who knows what he was told to do.

For me lets see how he plays under a AFL standard Senior Coach and see what he can really do for the MFC.

Lets be realistic, he was never going to be around long term, he has already shown more than cale Morton who he was effectively traded 4 with pick 88 or whatever it was and his influence i'm sure has been good, so at this stage i'd say recruiting him was not a bad decision, but i'd be surprised if he has any more than at best one more year.

Seems he and Davey are tag-teaming to see who gets one more year. He was very good in parts last night and will, as well as most the boys, improve the more they play together.

As much as I have loved watching Flash over the years and acknowledge that he has played some good games this year, he absolutely butchered some kicks against the Dogs and it's after games like that if I wonder that he might be better off giving it away at the end of the year.

he was awesome, and that goal was amazing

Mark Neeld is a genius for getting this guy to the club :)

ROFL

Hell has really frozen over

You have Mark Neeld and genius in the same sentence

Rodan is defined by his poor games. His entire career he has games where he pulls out a 10-12 possession game, that is just not good enough for a midfielder. He has done that 2-3 times this year. His good days are awesome, but he needs t lift his poor games into something of decent standard.

He's got some excitement I'll give him that much. And I think he's starting to get back into some kind of running defensively. I don't really understand why he was ever dropped in and out one week after another especially because there wasn't a long list of midfielders to take over.

But it's a blight on our list that he and Magner are competing for starting jobs when really both should be in case of emergency options like a Hutchings and Dalziel at West Coast who only came in after Embley, Shuey and Selwood were all out in the same week.

This would make sense, if we weren't missing Grimes and Viney.

Disagree. Grimes in for Dunn, Viney in for Blease or Byrnes if we had those 2 available before the dogs game. Even if they played mainly midfield our midfield numbers are so low one of Magner or Rodan would be getting a game.

Ideally I think 9 is the bare minimum for midfielders in your starting 22 (with 4 forwards, 6 defenders, 1 sub and 2 rucks). So that makes Jones, Sylvia, Viney, Grimes, Toumpas, M. Jones, Evans, Tagger (Mckenzie or Nicho) and one of Rodan/Magner only makes 9.

No doubt with everyone available there would be genuine debate over the final spots of selection between a Rodan or Matt Jones or Evans or Toumpas or a forward like Blease or Kent but I think ideally you'd have what Geelong do which is players like Stokes and Christensen who are really midfielders but capable of dual roles. If in doubt I'd go with the extra mids as you noticed we ran out of midfield power in the last 15 minutes against the dogs.

Happy to keep Rodan along with Davey. Both have something to contribute on and off the field with their experience.

Yeah definitely keep both Davey and Rodan at least for another year. They may not stay in the best 22 but we need all the experience we can get. And surely we have learnt from our mistakes of the past that forcing ageing players into retirement doesn't necessarily help, and they should be there to guide the young fellas.

Rodan has played one, maybe two good games. I'm sure his impact off the field is good but we can't afford to carry him and Davey for another year when both of their careers are heading for the end. I think we will hold on to one of them next season, if that. I'll include Byrnes in this too, though he'll probably stay for another season as he is a little bit younger.

We definitely need to go for at least one small forward/mid in the draft or trade period. Maybe Ben Warren? Dominating the goal kicking in the VFL.

Faint praise.

He's been better than that. Given us grunt and the ability to break away from the middle for several weeks now.

Those perennial baggers of the Gillies-Pederson-Byrnes recruitment threads should make a note to strike off Rodan now before they embarrass themselves further.

If his form holds I'd give him one more year.

As Robert Shaw on SEN noted yesterday, Rodan has plagued his teams with the same problem everywhere he has played; he is too unpredictable and his teammates ahead of him have no idea where he is going to go or what he is going do with the ball.

I'm still a fan of his recruitment, since I think his value lies off-field and he cost peanuts.

On-field he can be counterproductive, but works hard.

A true stopgap.

    DERAILMENT by KC from Casey

It wasn’t quite a trainwreck although at times, it sure looked like one, so I’ll settle for “derailment”.  The trip to Brighton Homes Arena in Springfield outside the back of Brisbane might not exactly be the same place where Homer Simpson’s family resides but, if you listened closely to the utterances of the Casey Demons fans both at the ground or watching via livestream, you could hear lots of groaning and plenty of expressions of “D'oh!” reverberating in the background, particular

TEN YEARS AFTER by Whispering Jack

Things have changed in the more than ten years since the West Coast Eagles decimated Melbourne by 93 points on the MCG early in the 2014 season. The two sides had not met at the home of football in the interim until yesterday when Melbourne won by a comfortable 54 points to remain in contention for this year’s finals series. Back in those days, the Demons were in the midst of their Great Depression but they have since tasted premiership glory and experienced a long enough period among

It’s game day and the Demons return to Melbourne to play the Eagles at the MCG for the first time in over a decade. A win keeps the Dees finals hopes alive whereas a loss will almost certainly slam the finals window shut.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
