I find it staggering that the AFL is in a position where sanctions can be handed down to its own clubs and players by an external force other than the police. I haven't read up on all of this stuff because quite frankly it bores the tripe out of me, but surely it was possible for the league to carry out its own drug testing in a credible manner while maintaining control over rules and penalties around the use of PEDs. It's obviously not essential for a sporting league to sign up for this as no major US league has adopted all of WADA's recommendations.

Clearly PED-related offenses should be punished, but for the AFL to have lost control over this situation is scary.

wrong. wada/asada don't hand out the penalties. they make a finding and the afl (having signed up to the wada protocol) deliver the actual penalties

however it would be unlikely that the afl would not use wada recommended penalties

if rumours are true essendon would then take out an injunction and its off to court (for maybe another 12 months)

Thanks. I'll happily take your word for it. So if the AFL doesn't have to follow the penalty guidelines of WADA/ASADA, why are people assuming it is out of the league's hands? Sorry to drag the debate back to stage 1.

1. AOD isn't actually banned

2. AOD isn't actually illegal it's just a substance not performance enhancing drug therefore like soap or honey it doesn't need to be approved for human use

If the AFL's policy is to follow WADA guidelines then they have in fact breached this agreement and as such are liable to punishment in accordance with the AFL's and WADA's policies.

3. Watson's statement is absolutely damning for this defence. He says that he knew they were giving him AOD, but not that it was banned. Given that WADA has repeatedly stated that the onus is on the athlete to ensure that they are not taking a banned substance, his statement has removed their ability to claim that they were not told what was being used and as such they are liable.

Basically, they look to be very very screwed and I wait in eager anticipation to see what rabbits they have in their hats to get out of this situation.

There was an interesting bit of discussion on SEN this afternoon about what would happen to the club if 15-20 players were suspended for a year or more. They pointed out that they would still have a number of good players available to them, Goddard and Daniher being the most notable. They may need permission to raid the VFL for top-up players to field a team, and could well be thrashed all season (earning a high draft pick?). It could be a very interesting thing.

My understanding is that the players were all concerned, and demanded a consent form that included guarantees from the club that the supplements were all legal/not banned. If this guarantee has been signed off by the club doctor, I would have thought that the onus on the player was met.

This would mean the club is absolutely screwed of course.

I think they would be stripped of high draft picks, the AFL could not give them pick 1, they would have to get last pick in each round as if they were premiers.
