Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

WELCOME TO DEMONLAND - PAUL ROOS

What if Roos gets us to a top 4 spot in his 3rd year? (if he stays on as head coach for that 3rd year) Right now, that seems unlikely, but a top 8 position isn't such a stretch for 2016. It's easy to envisage many Demons wanting to keep him at the helm.

However, the 'seamless' changeover is a terrific concept and it's one that I agree with. But it could get a little awkward down the track. What sounds great in theory doesn't always work in practice. No two clubs are alike. Roos to Longmire worked beautifully. Mick to Bucks ... that could turn out to be a disaster. The Pies should have changed their minds on that one.

But as a concept, appointing the next coach in the next little while is a great idea in theory. It can have the effect of setting out a long term viable future for the club. Obviously, our situation is vastly different to Collingwood's one. We need to virtually start from scratch. The beauty of it is that Roos has done it before so any pitfalls can be spotted well in advance. Exciting times ahead ...

The difference is Macca , Mick didn't want to go and Buckley is just an unbelievable big head, I would hope that we get a coach in waiting that has talent and coaching skills, not just a big ego.

I would want Roos to stay on however, Longmire had a ready made team and won a flag but they have fallen off the pace a bit since then.

They have fallen off the pace because of their unbelievably large injury list, many to key players. They will be back this week. Carlton will not get a look in. I still predict Swans will again make the GF.

I think you are a bit hard on Buckley. He gives me the impression of someone who knows exactly what needs to be done but is not allowed off the lease because Eddie wants above all else short term success. Collingwood certainly has no Paul Roos style "no dh's" policy, and they desperately need one. Reading between the lines of what Buckley said at his post game news conference that is exactly what they will get no matter whether Eddie wants it or not.

You can name the "rat pack" - everyone of them dh's - Swann, Didak, even I understand from a Collingwood insider - Thomas.

One very fortunate thing about this is under Roos I'm sure we will not be tempted to trade for any of them. Under our previous administrations, I'm sure we would have been first in there, but to be fair I would in no way put Chris Dawes in that category who seems in every way, a quality individual.

I think you should examine closely what Roos said. Specifically, he wants two or three senior assistants who are all capable of taking over and the best one gets the job. It is pretty simple really. Is done all the time in the corporate world. It is call succession planning.

We will not know who the next Demon coach is for at least 2 to 2 1/2 years in my opinion, but there will be endless speculation. Get used to it.

IMO I suspect Roos wants eventually to end up CEO, and I think he would make an excellent one. He is clearly a very ambitious man. It would not surprise me if that was part of the negotiation. Roos for PJ in three years time would make a lot of sense. Maybe we should (will) send him to the 3 month Harvard mini MBA over one summer.

PJ and the new Chairman obviously did something that the others chasing him did not (could not) do. He has consistently said it was the "total package" and the succession arrangement which got him across the line.

Great for him, and fantastic for the Demons.

I hope this multiple succession plan options is the way we go but that wasn't the impression I got. Happy to read it again though and see if I got it wrong.

I would however be very surprised if Peter Jackson has even considered Roos as CEO. He has no business management experience. That is a terrible idea in my opinion.

With PJ saying we have Roos so we will re look at how to structure the FD don't be surprised if we get Walshy for a few years with Roos to succeed him as head of the FD. Which sounds exactly what Roos would like to do, help set the standards and such of the club, with no coaching.

We already have PJ grooming a CEO I thought.

It's all well and good speculating about the Roos succession plan already but what happened to the great football tradition of taking things one week at a time?

I'm more interested ATM in who we retain and who we recruit before going on to who we're going to play in round 1 of the NAB Cup or the practice match series next year.

Some very interesting ideas amongst this.

Totally agree it will be Roos totally hands on for 2 years, the 3rd will be the final grooming of the anointed one.

Hadnt actually thought of PR as CEO . Its an idea I suppose but Think hes more inclined to seek an overseer mentor role a la Craigs role for a few years ( just to see his new charge right )

Interesting times ahead. :)

surely we wont name the successor until the end of the next season?

Wouldnt Roos want a season of seeing them up close in action before he decides who the man to takeover will be?

This is an excellent point HH. Given the low ebb the club had reached we needed at least 2 years of list management and rebuilding/coaching with clear air under Roos before (publicly) announcing a succession plan for say year4.

Assuming PJ, Roos & Co are as smart as everyone is suggesting, there has to be a process. Consisting of obvious aspects such as selection (2 or more potential assistants that could eventually be handed the reigns), assessment of potential candidates' under various conditions. Possibly even occasional match day coaching in year 3 (both candidates) under the watch of Roos etc. IMO if the job is to be carried out with the best possible assistant being chosen the club needed to allow at least 4 years, ie 2 under Roos (clear air) and 2 for the succession process. Starting the succession process from day 1 is a mistake IMO. Roos will have enough issues to deal with in his first 6 months without the burden of succession planning being placed on his mantle so early. This is one aspect of the set up that could have been better managed by PJ IMO.

What Roos said was that he and Peter would identify 2 or 3 "Assistants that want to head coaches" over the next few weeks (and Roos spoke about the fact that some Assistant Coaches don't want to be a head coach) and hire a "Senior Assistant for 2014 that will then be Head Coach in the future."

He spoke about certainty for the players about their senior coach for the next 5 to 7 years and that invovles a Senior Assistant-Head Coach in waiting.

We are going to have an assistant hired to be the next coach in the next few weeks.

I agree that there is a real possibility that Roos will stick around past the 3 years but I don't know if CEO is in his sights.

I guess that is where the speculation will lie for the next three years.

Is there any news on Geoff Walsh?

From what I have heard Mr Walsh has given his intention to the club he will take up the position. Thats great news also! In regards to assistants, we have spoken to both S Burns and A Simpson and A Richardson is in the mix if there is a guarantee of succession otherwise he will stay where he is.

In regards to Roos influence going forward next year? We have a solid back line, a great forward line but we need mids! Several picks in the ND and a pick in the PSD could mean we load up on what we need for next year and all of a sudden....bang! Our improvement will be dramatic! Keep the faith! Goos fraba...goss fraba!

On the Couch:

Gerard opens the show and introduces Roosy as the MFC coach and congratulates him. Mike jokes and suggests that the announcement was supposed to be tomorrow according to last week's show. Roosy says his wife is due back on Tues and he looks forward to the challenge of being the MFC coach.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
