Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

I think a lot of people forget how good Lyon was.

The amount of time he was thrown into the centre square when were down at 3 quarter time, and inspired us to victory.

Not to mention he kicked 70+ goals in back to back seasons, which rarely happens these days. In fact Buddy Franklin has done it just once (07,08')

Robbie Flower. Just how good would he have been in a top side. Played for the team and was played in a position to help the team not himself, and never whinged about it.

A sign of a true champion!

US: Cale Morton: created pace for himself so comprehensive that sometimes it looked as though he were playing a different game to the other 35 men on the field.

Had skills that would turn a game, nearly every game.

The ability to run off/away from his opponent.

Nice long socks too.

Very similar top 5. Lyon was awesome at his best, his semi final V the Dogs in 94 was brilliance. Damn back injury!!!!!!

Ablett Jr is an absolute freak, a pure joy to watch and so consistently good.

As a kid Jakovich was the reason we watched the footy, god we loved him.

Watching Jurrah was something else, I loved that feeling/sound that went around the G when our mids got the ball and we could see LJ start moving, you could tell he was going to do something special. It was electric.

I know it's a big call - but Garry Ablett Jnr. has got to be one the best AFL players in history, if not the best.

Mainly for consistency. Every game, particularly recently, he manages to perform at a level pretty much un-rivaled and for me the one who will be responsible for GCS' success in the future.

Favourite non-MFC players/groups:

  1. Black/Voss/Lapin/Brown/Akermanis
  2. Garry Ablett Jnr.
  3. Lloyd/Hird/Fletcher
  4. S. Mitchell
  5. Cox

Favourite MFC players/groups:

  1. Yze/Robinson/Neitz/Davey/White
  2. Farmer
  3. N. Jones
  4. Nathan Carroll (always provided some entertainment)
  5. Pickett (defied gravity and was the last player who got away with those old bumps)

Most disliked AFL players/groups:

  1. Maxwell/Thomas
  2. C. Brown
  3. J. Selwood
  4. Franklin
  5. McLean

1. Matthews

2. Carey

3. Ablett Snr

4. Voss

5. Lockett

6. Greg Williams

7. Blight

8. Madden

9. Judd (many forget how good the young Judd was)

10. Hird

Take you up on Judd, Ablett jnr for me...much better kick and mark and just as explosive. Will play out his career as a very dangerous forward like Matthews.

...but in the end it is just an opinion game.

Always a difficult one to judge given different roles and different positions people play. Since the start of the 92 season (first season that I clearly remember following from round 1 to GF) my best 25 for Melbourne would be:

FB: Sean Wight, James Frawley, Matthew Whelan

HB: Steven Febey, Anthony Ingerson, Matthew Febey

C: Steven Tingay, Shane Woewodin, Adem Yze

HF: Garry Lyon, David Schwarz, James McDonald

FF: Allen Jakovich, David Neitz, Jeff Farmer

FOLL: Jim Stynes, Todd Viney, Glenn Lovett

INT: Cameron Bruce, Brad Green, Nathan Jones, Brett Lovett, Jarred Rivers, Russell Robertson, Jeff White

And rest of the AFL:

FB: Matthew Scarlett, Stephen Silvagni, Nathan Burke

HB: John Worsfold, Glenn Jakovich, Gavin Wanganeen

C: Chris Judd, Robert Harvey, Garry Ablett Jnr

HF: Garry Ablett Snr, Wayne Carey, Peter Daicos

FF: Jason Dunstall, Tony Lockett, Phil Matera

FOLL: Dean Cox, Michael Voss, Greg Williams

INT: Nathan Buckley, James Hird, Anthony Koutoufidies, Peter Matera, Andrew McLeod, Nick Riewoldt, Paul Salmon

Big appologise to Mark Riccouto but couldn't find a spot for him.

When I was a young bloke, I watched Peter Hudson kick 12 or 13 against us. It was all quite effortless. I'm surprised he does not get more of a mention in lists like this. Two other fantastic players from my memory were Malcolm Blight and Jezza.

In more recent times- Carey, Lockett and the Abletts.

Robbie was the standout for Melbourne.

You're right 'Bitter', often forgotten but an absolute freak of a player. The Kennedy game plan, get the ball and kick it to Hudson. He was playing the paddock way before Pagan and Carey.

Most talented MFC player a dead heat between Schwarz and Jakovich; best was Flower.

Overall, a massive fan of Carey. Also rated Terry Daniher very highly. At 188 cm, for most of the 80's he was clearly the best key position utility player in the competition. He was amongst the best 2 -3 Centre Half Forwards, Centre Half Backs, Full Backs and Full Forwards in the league all at the same time. A better version of David Neitz and one of the great leaders of all time.

Sorry

Off topic

You can't compete with the sort of umpiring I just saw in the St Kilda west coast game

In my next life I want to be an AFL umpire

Absolute power with no accountability

Just adding to your off topic, topic and it's probably not one for a thread of it's own just yet.

Always a problem with the letting the game flow philosophy is every now and then they will pull up a 50/50 that has been let go and technically the KB's of the world can argue it is the correct decision when it was not paid on countless other times not only in this game but over the last few weeks. The one against Darling in the marking contest and the one Priddis got for in the back are 2 that immediately spring to mind but there were a few more inconsistencies.

Back on topic...talking about Hudson before I was just a kid at Glenferrie the day he did his knee before half time I think it was and he had 8 on the board up until then. Is that right? That was the only way we were going to stop him that day.

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

    OOZEE by The Oracle

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
